A big thank you to Sophie for helping me identify the microchip company used on a cat who followed us home on a walk one evening. He has been a cherished family member ever since that fateful evening. We had him scanned at the vet, but they didn't know which company. I tried calling HHS and never got a person, then I found Cat Friends. The switch was easy with the company once I verified with the csr who the original chip belonged to. He is now an indoor only kitty enjoying the spoils of wet food, air conditioning, tv, toys, bird watching beds, and being granny's favorite fur baby. Just dont tell the others. Lol! Thank you Cat Friends for the village involved in his life. From the people who trapped and released him, to the medical team who neutered and monitored him. I will pay it forward for introducing me to my best friend. ^_^ Update: I realized I didn't include information on how others can help too! On their website, hicstfriends.org, click on ways to help. There is a donation link powered by givebutter, so you can make a one time or monthly monetary donation of your choice. There is a volunteer link if you wish to sign up for more opportunities such as clinic days, or other duties such as educating, trapping, or assisting other volunteers in feeding/trapping. You can also gift items they need such as: wet and dry cat food, gas gift cards, led flashlights and batteries, 55 and 13 gallon trash bags, paper towels, and clorox bleach for their supply pantry/clinic days. If you are unable to make the the supply drop off from 10a-2p on their clinic days, you can always give them a call and coordinate a drop off date. Clinic days involves signing up for different shifts, (9-2, 12-4p, 3p-end of shift) and different duties such as: checking in, numbering the traps and placing kitties in line for surgery, cleaning the traps and lining them with fresh paper, monitoring the cats who are waking up from anesthesia (I think this is a great opportunity for future vet med students), administration duties such as helping with paperwork or discharging cats, laundry, cleaning, and organizing. By far the most affordable option for spaying or neutering your cat. $65 to get your cat fixed AND microchipped or $15 if you catch a feral cat (they know if a cat is feral or if it is a pet, and will put a tiny snip on the ear of a feral cat to symbolize that it has been fixed). I called around to essentially every vet that honored the Hawaiian Humane Society's Neuter Now program and even though this voucher is $40/$50, each and every vet then charges for wellness exams, blood work, and a mountain of other added on expenses, totaling anywhere from $200-$500 (AFTER you purchase the voucher). I think this is absolutely INSANE. The volunteers were friendly, knowledgable, and efficient. I dropped my cat off in the morning and was back to pick her up by noon. Since they don't keep them overnight, it is likely that they will still be under the anesthesia when you pick them up. This part freaked me out a little because it looked like my cat was dead! Her eyes were open and it was kind of creepy! But she slept it off and I kept a close eye on her. We had no complications. I highly recommend Cat Friends. read more

I love what Hi Cat Friends does. I only came across this organization just last Sunday at their Petco adoption event in Kapolei. Hi Cat Friends is a non-profit organization The people I talked to at the adoption event were extremely helpful and I can tell they really love what they do. I met a little girl kitty named Sweetie, my husband really really wanted to take her home. Unfortunately, our current living space does not allow pets. There are adoption fees and a discounted fee if you adopt 2 kittens. They recommend adopting 2 kittens since they will keep each other company while your away from home. What better for these little kitties to get a forever home and a companion too? All the cats live in their homes and they are always looking for adoptive families for the cats and even foster families too! Talking with the people at the event, I can see the dedication and effort that this organization puts in. My husband and I talked to a woman (we don't recall her name) and we really wanted to become a foster family for the organization. We vowed to contact them when we were ready. I really like this organization and what they stand for. I hope to be a foster family for the cats of this organization in the near future eventually adopt one or two, and even volunteer my time as well. read more

I had my pet Jake neutered at their School Street clinic in January. Cat Friends provided terrific service. Since then, they have had to relocate the clinic to Kunia. I had another great experience with spaying a free-roaming female cat at their $5 feral clinic. I rented a trap from Cindy, an awesome Cat Friends volunteer. I believe she said Cat Friends is currently only doing feral spaying and neutering, and that all cats must be brought in a humane trap. read more

Scholars note that the 1900 outbreak of bubonic plague in Chinatown (so bad that most of Chinatown was burned to the ground for blocks!) May have been exacerbated by "clean ups" of feral cats...the effective natural predator of disease carrying, disgusting rats. People who complain about managed colonies "feeders" and feral cats should consider how much they like rats. The work of groups like HCF is an all volunteer public health service...and a humane, loving group finding ways for feral cats to integrate into our increasingly callous, selfish and sanitation-obsessed modern world. Only $65 to get your kitty cat friend spayed and microchipped. They have a spay/neuter clinic on most Sundays. Just go online to register for the clinic that works best for you. There's a drop off station in the parking lot where you can sign all the paperwork for the surgery. You can also fill out the paperwork online and print it beforehand to speed up the process. I initially signed up for a clinic on a Sunday but had to reschedule twice due to my own work conflicts. Jason was so nice and accommodating and made sure to move my reservation twice when I needed to reschedule. VCA charges $199 for spay/neuter and I don't even know if that includes a microchip. This is a much better deal! And 100% of the proceeds go to helping more cats stay healthy and find homes. read more

We adopted our Ranger from here and couldn't be happier. We were set to meet with a different foster kitten but she was a little too shy to fit in with our alpha male Charlie. Process was quick and easy, they even clipped his nails and included a flea treatment :) As potential adopters you fill out questionnaires so they can asses you before allowing the animals to leave, they really do care about all of their animals. I've known Jen and some of the volunteers that help cat friends for a few years now, they are all totally dedicated to helping the feral cat population. I've volunteered for them a couple times and also volunteered at the Oahu SPCA location where Jen was also there too, so I know how hard work it is to spay/neuter and trap the cats. What she and the cat friends volunteers do takes a lot of love and hard work, its exhausting and very time consuming but they keep on working hard to control the feral cat population. They are also located at a more convenient location now on N school st where there is ample parking, they will always be my first choice to suggest to anyone who needs their cat spayed/neutered. read more

This will be 2nd cat neutered here, for a fraction of the cost of taking a cat to VCA or any animal hospital. Don't get me wrong, I have always had cats, right now 3, and they get their shots, annual appt.'s, extra visits for owwies. But 1/4 the price for spaying or neutering is practical. I think my Vet wanted 175in total, and I forgot exactly what I paid CAT Friends, but I think it was 35! You drop them off in the morning in your cat carrier, with a towel inside for comfort. Drop your cat off early morning and come back after lunch. My kitten, 6 months, walked out of her cage, ran to her food bowl, and started to chase a lizard passing by. My girlfriend told me about this place, since she frequently bring in feral cats, and they do it for 5 or 10 dollars. They place us clean, has tons of volunteers assigned to help, and a licensed Vet, who even put in a microchip, free vaccine as part of the cost. Very impressed, no crazy Elizabethan collar needed. No drugged out cat, or crying cat, everything was right as rain, just like my previous cat experience the year before. I really appreciate HI Cat Friends. We had a stray cat adopt our backyard, and soon she had a litter of kittens! As any pet owner knows, spaying/neutering lengthens your animal's life and enhances their health. However, not everyone can cough up the money for that vet bill! And if you have a whole litter it's pretty much unthinkable. HI Cat Friends really helped us out; they offer spay/neuter for feral cats at less than $20, even in this economy! With their help we were able to get the mommy and her kittens fixed at the feral cat price (b/c mom was feral), and now we have a happy, healthy kitty family! Here in Hawaii feral cats are a big deal, but HI Cat Friends understands that many times economics, not callousness, prevents we poor people from helping out. Thanks HI Cat Friends!! read more

What an amazing group of volunteers! They make the process of getting a cat neutered or spayed so easy. They return calls promptly, answer questions, follow-up, instruct what to do and expect for pre and post surgery and do it all with a smile! I gave them both in-kind donations of a case of 24 pate cat food, cat toys, Scotch tape...things they were running low on as well as an additional small monetary donation. $65 for neutering my 5-month old Makalea and micro chipping him was so reasonable. I visited CatFriends animal clinic today and was so impressed with the operation. There is a friendly volunteer that meets you at the door. As you look up there is a doctors room to the left where vets are doing sterilizations of privately owned and feral cats .When the cats are finished with their operations they come out to the loving arms of volunteers who groom them and get them ready to return to their homes. The ladies show so much love even talking to them and treating the cats like precious treasures. CatFriends founder Jennifer Kishimori created a beautiful organization and she cannot be praised enough for all her work and devotion. read more
