Our mom's final wishes were to have her 4 daughters scatter her ashes at sunset off of Waikiki Beach near the Natatorium. We originally scheduled this for August 9th and had to re-schedule due to the large waves off of Waikiki. They were very thoughtful and accommodating with this as 2 of us live on the Big Island. We had a Zoom call with Captain Ken and talked about what was important to us. We emphasized we wanted a boat with a cash bar, sound system, and beautiful flowers. We decided to pay for a minister and he suggested a ukulele player, which we rejected emphasizing we had our own playlist. He assured us that he could provide all of these, so we booked the silver package. We received an email confirmation for a 50 ft boat with cash bar and bartender. We communicated with the owners once we arrived in Honolulu and nothing was stated about any changed being made. We were surprised when we arrived and were offered a 4 oz bottle of water and no bar/bartender was available due to their decision to switch our boat to a smaller vessel. We asked the crew why the switch and were not offered an explanation. We had not brought any of our own drinks for our planned toast as this was not communicated to us. The minister didn't seem like he had read the informational form that I filled out about my brother, but then decided to play the ukulele:) It was fine, but not what we had discussed. The sound system was not loud enough to be heard when the boat was running or if you were out on the deck, even after repeated requests to turn up the volume. The lack of a bathroom also was disappointing as we understood that would be an option on the bigger boat. I waited a few days to see if Captain Ken would reach out with an explanation after we had voiced our disappointment, but he did not. I emailed him directly and also no response. I ultimately forwarded my email to Devin (office manager) who was always very helpful and she did give us an apology. Ultimately we only had one chance to fulfill my brother's final wishes and Hawaii Ash Scattering fell short in helping us achieve that. read more

This is an excellent service for an ash scattering memorial at sea. From the first contact, Devin was informative, professional, prompt, and knowledgeable. Setting up the service was very easy with information online and a quick phone call to set everything up. They sent a very easy to understand invoice and you can email or call anytime with questions. You get very explicit instructions to the pier. The day of the memorial everything was perfect. The boat was well-maintained and extremely clean. We had a service with a Hawaiian singer and spiritual leader. He was phenomenal. Our service also included rose petals, a Hawaiian wreath, and butterflies. It was absolutely beautiful and such a fitting send off to a lifelong sailor and his wife. One of the butterflies followed us for a while and we were so touched. The rose petals looked so beautiful in the water. We also received a memorial certificate with a beautiful poem and the coordinates of our loved ones. We could not be happier with the service. Devin was so patient and kind throughout the process and my 1000 phone calls I made asking my hundreds of questions and she guided me patiently along the way. The Hawaiian Kahu we had was top tier. The prayers were so beautiful and he took the time to call me the night before to genuinely get to know brother-in-law As soon as we released his pu'ulo, we were immediately enveloped by a pod of dolphins jumping and spinning. This was our first and so far our only experience with spreading ashes and therefore there is nothing to compare it to. What I can say with certainty - our expectations are typically high and Hawaii Ash Scatterings exceeded them. To arrange for the service, we communicated with Cheryl over the phone and email. The conversation was professional and warm at the same time. I recommend looking at their website first and then talk to them about the options based on your preferences. At the agreed day and time, we arrived at the Whalers Village and checked in at the Sea Maui kiosk. (That is the name of the chartered vessel.) The attendant called the Captain and within minutes, the boat approached the shore and we boarded. We met the crew: Captain Brad, Carrie, Mario and the ukulele player Eric. They were all very lively and friendly and made us feel home. They briefed us on boat safety and explained the plan for our 2-hour trip. Also, they asked about any preferences we may have. Music: Carrie asked what kind of music would we like to listen to during our trip. She mentioned they have Spotify and we told her we have a special playlist but for some reason couldn't access it. Carrie re-created the playlist for us, and it meant so much. That alone was amazing customer service. The ceremony: when we arrived at a good spot, appropriate distance from the shore, we did the ceremony itself, the spreading of the ashes. The crew assisted in unobtrusive and discreet way. It was private, special, and emotional. Eric blew conch shell in all directions and then played a ukulele. Carrie asked if we would like a video and I'm glad that we said yes. Food and drinks: tasty pupus (appetizers) and various beverages (including alcoholic) were available to us. Overall, this was the right decision. Our dear mom/nana/mom-in-law received the best goodbye possible in the place of her choosing. The certificate we received few days later has the exact coordinates so we will be able to come and visit in the future. read more

Be aware the Pu'olu or ti leaf urn has a 6lb weight limit otherwise you will have to buy an additional ti leaf urn or the rest of the ashes are returned to you. I would opt for a local florists who can make the Pu'olu without the weight limit or ask the local mortuary for guidance/referrals if you decide to go that route. Also know you can bring your own flower petals and/or leis which will probably be better quality than ones they provide. Don't expect anything more than a rental boat to scatter your loved one's ashes. I wouldn't opt for any upgrades or other options. read more

Used them to fulfill my uncles last wishes. To be scattered home in the Hawaiian waters. It couldn't have been more perfect. Because of COVID I was unsure if this trip was even going to happen. I ended up calling the week before and spoke with Captain Ken who took all my information down and had Cheryl book the day and email me with more information on what package I wanted. Cheryl and I email back and forth with each other. She responded very quickly and helped me get everything organized. Since my uncles ashes were already in Hawaii, I easily was able to drop them off a few days prior to be prepped by the florist. The day of we arrived at the dock and was greeted by our Kahu who would direct a small ceremony and bless the ashes. Our group of 11 (6 adults and 5 kids) boarded the vessel Sea Scale and captain Wes set sail to find us a nice and serene spot. Along the way we were able to see a turtle and a pod of dolphins. (such an amazing experience) The waters were calm and clouds in the sky which made it a beautiful morning. Once the ceremony concluded we scattered his ashes and spread an array of eco leis and flower petals in the water. Captain Wes then circled that area and took note of the location for us to keep. On the way back we sort of just drifted slowly. It was so nice and calm and just peaceful. I couldn't have asked for a better way to honor my uncle. We had a few moments to share our memories of our beloved son also. The most memorable part of this ceremony was watching the beautiful sun set as we headed back to the pier. The company is extremely professional. They had me mail his ashes ahead, advised me when they were received. Called me to discuss details. I traveled from Pennsylvania with friends to Hawaii for the service. It was pouring rain but Captain Micky assured us it would be safe. My husbands ashes were in a traditional burial urn with baskets of rose petals and beautiful leis. On the way to Diamond head we were encouraged to talk about our Jim. The ukulele player who was also a Hawaiian minister sang and chanted as we put our Jim into the waters followed by rose petals and our leis. I tend not write bad reviews, but "Captain Ken" is extremely rude and condescending. He was upselling me on a more expensive ash scattering package than what I requested and continued to add additional services. Not to mention, he asked for a deposit even before I was shown an invoice. When I asked him to explain what all the extra charges were for, he replied, "It seems like money is an issue for you." I don't think asking for a detail of what you're being charged for is unreasonable. To me it sounds like money is tight for him and he's desperate to nickel and dime his patrons. Our family thought it would be nice to have a Kahu come to our brothers ash scattering at Kilauea volcano. Our brother, a Hilo resident since 1985, spent many hours photographing Kīlauea over the years and it seemed so meaningful to scatter his ashes there. We inquired with Devon and were told that the Kahu would be with us for 2 hours. We paid the deposit. After discussing further, our family decided a 2 hour ceremony would be too long for the family and friends attending in this case (we were not going out in a boat). We asked about scheduling the Kahu for 1 hour, which seemed better for our needs. Devon said she would ask Captain Ken, and he agreed but the cost would still be the same regardless. After this conversation, we reconsidered and chose to cancel the Kahu service. We ended up having our own ceremony and it was beautiful. Every step of the scattering of my Mom's ashes was handled with care and could not have gone any better. From first contact with Captain Ken and Cheryl, then the Blue Orchid Florist to the sailing with Captain Ron...we were handled with care and everything went so well. We had rainbow on way out...right after my brother put moms ashes in water, and we watched the petals follow her out, I turned to my brother and said, "now I just want the dolphins to come play with us"...he chuckled...less than 2-3 minutes later, Captain Ron said, "we have dolphins!" We had a good experience with them. I made several phone calls and they were always professional and polite. It is not cheap and they do try to upsell you, which I expect from any business; they did not push hard. We had a beautiful experience, the eco-urn was lovely, and after circling the site which we had strewn with flowers, we saw a turtle, some sea snakes or eels, and a small pod of dolphins. The only thing I would comment on is the captain and assistant who took us out were not very friendly and seemed a bit brusk for the occasion (neither one was Captain Ken.) read more
