For about $8.00 more per person at Legal Seafoods, you get a roll, a cloth napkin, and a metal fork. This nondescript little seafood shop doubles as a restaurant, and reminds this long time denizen of Inman Square of what Legal Seafoods was when it was building its rep instead of living off of it. For those of you who don't remember, the original Legal Seafood was a fish market in Inman Square (OK, technically one block out in Legal Square) where you could walk in and pick out a cut of fish, pay for it, ask them to bake, broil or fry it, and then go upstairs and eat it at a long table with anyone and everyone else who had chosen to eat there at that time. Inexpensive, unpretentious, and exceptionally good. (Ironic that none of the three apply any longer.) In a "bizarre coincidence" of "unknown origin," the original Legal burnt to the ground during the grand opening of the new, hoity-toity, white linen Legal Seafoods at the Park Plaza, leaving me chuckling every time the hostess would ask "smoking or nonsmoking" at the new joint. Anyways, at Twin Seafood you'll find no white linen, no hostess, and neither hoity nor toity. You'll find a very friendly host and owner in Justin, who's personality more than makes up for the plastic cutlery and straight-from-the-bottle soft drinks you'll have on one of the 4 bare tables in this tiny spot. Order at the counter from an array of fresh fish and shellfish - on display in the counter across the room - choose your beverage from the cooler and grab a seat. Given a choice of Spicy Crab, Haddock, or Clam chowder, I asked Justin which he would serve if he were being judged strictly on one cup of soup. "Half haddock, half clam," he replied, I accepted, and shortly thereafter had one of the tastiest bowls of soup I can remember. This cup of soup was as good, if not better, than any soup I've had in the smoking or nonsmoking section of the aforementioned seafood behemoth. My dad opted for the Spicy Crab Corn Chowder and it, to, was quite good. Next up, grilled Tuna, medium rare for me, Salmon for dad, and Coconut Shrimp for mom. All three of us were quite happy with the meal. Theirs came with a salad, mine with rice pilaf, and all three with a thimble full of cole slaw. Good cole slaw... just not much of it. Justin came back with a bottle of malt vinegar and told us to add a shot to the slaw for an extra flavor boost. Nice touch. (Want more slaw, on the plate, not in the little plastic cup!) My Dad said it was one of the nicest pieces of salmon he's ever had, my tuna was grilled perfectly and seasoned only slightly, allowing the fresh flavor of the fish to shine through. Although the coconut shrimp was not prepared on premises, the shrimp were large, moist, fresh tasting and delicious. Twin no longer serves beer or wine, although when I asked, Justin joked (I think) about rustling up a Coors Light if I really wanted one. I told him I had asked for "beer." Be aware that the place really warms up - kind of hot, actually, during the late afternoon when the sun pours in through the west facing windows; some blinds and a better air conditioner would be a nice improvement All three of us ate very well for about $55. Try that at Legal. Next time I'm bringing a couple rolls, a couple place settings of silverware, a bottle of wine, and my girlfriend. read more

Dropped in for lunch and got today's special-- grilled salmon and shrimp, plus sauteed veggies. Wow. Simple, grilled, no sauce, no seasonings. Just super fresh salmon flavor. On this fish, any adulteration would be sacrilege. The shrimp are huge and plump. Even the veggies are fresh, simple, and delicious. The chef/owner is incredibly friendly, and passionate about his food. He told me he's cooked at the greats (L'Espalier, Grill 23, etc.) but there's no pretension in him, the restaurant, or the food. The cleanest, non-fishy smelling seafood market you'll ever step into. The owner Franny is top notch guy and knows his seafood, not to mention extremely friendly and knowledgable. He's given me a lecture on seafood a few time while whipping up my lunch and definitely knows his stuff. His associate Jim is just as friendly and knowledgable. He's even offered to show me around when I'm out here on business trips. Who does that?! If I want seafood, this is the place I go. Quality doesn't get any fresher than this as they gets shipments daily and its definitely on par, if not better, than the more expensive ilLegal $eafood joint. Nothing beats their lunch portion sizes of grilled/broiled/baked/fried seafood for $8.99 which comes with sides, coleslaw, tartar sauce. Seafood goes straight from the fridge to the kitchen. Can't beat that!! Why settle for frozen seafood when you can get it fresh, cooked to order?!?! Nothing is overdressed with spices, sauces unlike other places in order to hide the awful fishy smell. I am beyond appreciative to know of a fish market that I can trust! How do I even begin to express my admiration for a place like this? For one, even in the Boston area, it's seems to me as though fish markets are very few and far between. Sure, you can go to your local super market and grab your think filet, but where's the fun in that? How experienced and knowledgeable are those guys? I talked to the owner for about 10 minutes and I was absolutely reassured that this is the go-to place for fresh and delicious fish! Price per pound is typical and standard $15-20/lb depending on the type of fish and time of year. I was completely satisfied for the $15 full haddock filet I bought last night. And, yes it was a huge piece that fed my boyfriend and myself. I don't know exactly remember how the conversation started, but one thing just led to earning the owner/chef's respect! Freddy is what I heard. Reading other's reviews, seems to be Fanny. What ever his true name might be... He is the Man! He is the God of Fish! He is someone you need to trust when it comes to consumer business! He taught me unknown facts, and how he lays his business model. "When a customer leaves my market, I have a clear conscience that they have a great-quality fish." By the time I got home, prepped and grilled my beautiful haddock, I couldn't wait to sink into the first bite. Something happened here: I had an outer body experience with the incredibleness that caressed my tongue. Yes, you can taste the purity, and freshness. It was flaky and wonderful. I felt like a queen that had been served the best of the sea. I will sacrifice 100 townsmen to fetch me fish like that again! I can see myself going to Haven for the rest of my life. We stopped here for lunch based on Yelp reviews, and I'm so glad we did. The lobster roll was perfection-- more lobster than any place, ever, and only 12.95, served with perfectly respectable, though pre-frozen, fries. Fried clams were also delicious. Fish market in the front with a small casual restaurant on the side. Everything looked very fresh and was reasonably priced. I ordered the broiled haddock lunch portion with grilled veggies and cole slow - for only $8.99! What a deal! I was the first one in the place when they opened, so the chef asked me if I wanted to "try" the clam chowder. I said sure and was expecting a tiny little cup of it- he came out with an entire bowl with oyster crackers and everything! It was realllllly good too. Fish came out perfectly cooked and was delicious. Veggies were good, had a nice seasoning. We experienced terrible service at this restaurant. After waiting 50 minutes for a lobster roll and a grilled shrimp plate, we left. Customers came in after us and were served before us. There was never any explanation of what was going on with our order. No one seemed to care. Maybe the food is good here, we'll never know because we will never be back. This is probably the worst restaurant expeience I have ever had, mostly due to the complete indifference of the staff. read more

After reading the decent reviews on yelp I decided on Haven seafood to get a clam dinner. I was thoroughly disappointed. The clams were either overcooked or the oil was old. They along with the fries were very tough and chewy. Not crispy at all. Prices were decent, the place was very clean and wasn't fishy smelling on the market side. I might try some fresh fish sometime but I don't think I would ever get a cooked meal here again. read more

We ate here on a Friday night. We got there a little before 6 and the place was empty at the time. We placed our order at the counter - 2 lobster rolls, one cup of clam chowder, and one cup of crab soup. We sat down to wait and the place is actually really busy. Between ppl coming to eat there, stopping to get fish from the market, and the phone ringing, I can't believe there aren't more reviews on here! The lobster rolls were on round buns that were toasted and, at first, you think they're small for the $14.95 you spend. By the time you're done with the overstuffed roll, the fries (I'd get the fries, not the roasted potatoes) and the coleslaw that's included in that price PLUS the great clam chowder, you'll be plenty full - the 'cups' of soup are bowls instead. I recommend the chowder over the crab soup - didn't really taste crab in the soup. The bill was about $40 for the two of us. I'll be back, even if not to eat in, to try some fish from the market. read more

This was a last minute "nothing to cook, what are we going to have for dinner" spot. My husband read review here on yelp and figured it was worth a try. I ordered fish and chips for the old man, and I got a lunch portion of grilled shrimp over grilled veggies. While waiting with my 1 year old i got to really check out the place. The seafood display is really nice, fresh cuts and yummy selection. The place seemed pretty busy with locals picking up some fresh cuts. The fish shop is separated from the seated section which is nice. It look like a pretty neat place to have lunch. The two guys working were super nice, helping me tame my little one year old with oyster crackers. Before i get to my food review, i have to explain something cool that happened. I thought i recognized the owner who helped me order, but i couldn't' place the face. After some small talk, he explained he worked for years and years at Greer's Seafood in Belmont. That's where i grew up, and if you are from that area you know that Greer's on Trapelo was the mecca for seafood on Friday night. Call in your order early in the day, line out the door without fail and taking home the most delicious seafood that was cooked with care. The owner (i think his name is franny) explained he works hard to recreate that Greers taste. I just knew this was going to be good. Of course i get home and we dig right in...first thing we notice is how fresh the food tastes. My shrimp was very lightly seasoned and perfectly grilled and the veggies (nice mixed of zucchini, onion, pepper, carrots and squash) were drool worthy (and i can tell you i NEVER drool over veggies). My husband admitted it was probably the best fish and chips he has had in years. After a while you just get used to getting served overly battered, wet, oily fish. this was carefully coated and clearly cooked for the perfect amount of time at the perfect temperature. So in short, i highly recommend this place, for fresh fish and prepared food. the service is excellent, and this guy has a fantastic reputation for customer service, and years of experience on how to cook seafood. cheers! read more

Hard to find on the web. No webpage from I can see BUT don't let this stop you. Also, the look from the outside, like a fish market (which it is) and not a restaurant (which it also is) shouldn't deter you. Go in, the welcome smile of the owner and staff will greet you along with the great menu, all fresh and all under 15.00 (except the large oyster order). We had two glasses of house wine (limited wine and beer but a decent pour) and started with steamy bowls of chowder. Excellent chowder and this is from someone who worked in boston restaraunts for many of my years. Dinner came next, served on china but with plastic forks. Even the owner will crack a joke about that. But don't let that fool you. I had an amazing filet of Halibit grilled to perfection on top of a bed of rice pilaf. The fish was so fresh, a squeeze of lemon and sprinkle of pepper and I was in heaven. My husband got the fried haddock plate with cajun fries. Lots of flaky fish with a very light batter, fried in fresh oil at the right temp. resulted in a wonderful dish which he inhaled. Two glasses of wine each, two amazing dinners worthy of any of the seafood joints in town and two cups (really mini bowls) of chowder and the bill was under 50.00. I don't usually write reviews but this place was so terrible I just had to. I had a groupon so at least I only paid half price, which was still way too much. I got the scallops with salad, it should've came with cole slaw but it didn't. It consisted of 7 scallops and some iceberg lettuce from a bag. my husband got the haddock and rice and was not impressed. the portions were tiny, I can't imagine what the lunch portions looks like. Absolutely the best seafood place around. The owner really cares about keeping it fresh. Sometime you might be disappointed if something has run out but understand thats why it is always so fresh. Better to run out occasionally than to get fish thats been sitting around too long. Best bets, Swordfish (the best), dry scallops. Great neighborhood place. Justin treats his customers well. Would give it 5 stars if it was easier to eat healthy here. You can get any of their fish fillets grilled instead of fried, which is great. The veggies side has improved. The side salad is not substantial, although I haven't ordered it in a while. Maybe it's improved. Twin Seafood is the best place to go for fresh seafood. Justin (the owner) is great and very knowledgeable. Anytime I have any question about how to prepare/cook they know the answer. Haven Seafood replaced Twin Seafood in January 2011. The new owner has made it a top notched place. Great place to buy your fish/lobsters/shellfish whether you are cooking it yourself or having them cook it for you. They have their fish delivered daily and I have never been disappointed I love to eat in after a busy day and I don't feel like cooking. The chowders are out of this world. The manager, named Frannie, goes out of his way to answer any questions you may have. He is also a top notch chef who takes pride in his work. The workers go out of their way to serve you. It is nice to be able to support a local business who serves quality seafood. The word around town and surrounding areas is spreading fast about the quality of this place. I also can't believe how reasonable the prices are. Such a deal! Keep up the great work guys. I recommend this place to everyone I know. PS I am very picky. :) read more
