Many large hotels pay lip-service to the mantra "organic,fresh,and local" but Raffles is the exception that lives up to the standard. My room was tastefully appointed with fancy antiques, as is the rest of the place. What sets this place apart is the attention to the tiny details, from the quality of the tea to the placement of the light switches. Every need has been anticipated, and that is truly rare. The prepared breakfast is amazing, again the attention to details sets it apart. On top of everything else, its relatively affordable. The only word of caution is that, with all the fragile stuff, its probably not the best for kids (at least really destructive kids).

Had a wonderful stay here…read more Just came off 5 nights in London and were were in dire need to decompress. The Grosvenor fit the bill perfectly. Perched on The Hoe, it's about 100 yards from some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, Plymouth harbor and an easy walk along the sea to the Barbican area. The rooms are very comfortable (maybe a little old fashioned) with enough modern conveniences such as very fast wi-fi and flat screen TV - to make your in room time relaxing (we did not always find such good wi-fi in our travels). There are menu items (not a buffet) for breakie that are well cooked and served to a perfection in fine English fashion. I learned from the staff what eggs and soldiers are, for example. The hotel includes a small bar for that chapeau de soir after a long day of touring. The desk staff at any time of the day were charming and so helpful. For what we wanted in a hotel (not really a B&B in my mind), we could not have done better.

The staff at this hotel are really friendly and accommodating and offered me advice on where to go and how to get there. At breakfast you are encouraged to choose just exactly what you want from the usual breakfast options (and the food was good too!) and as well as starting the day right, you can end it right at their bar, which has a really good selection of bottled local ales (including the wonderful Cornish Knocker by Skinners). Most hotels in Plymouth seem to be in this part of town right near Plymouth Hoe. This makes for an unusual few streets that feel a bit odd because the people living in them are always being replaced on a daily basis.

I work in…read morePlymouth so to save money I used my work accomodation, and my Wife Stayed at Poppy's to be with her friend. The Owner had recently taken on the guest house, in 2008, and was in the process of renovating it. The location is Near to the Hoe and Park Areas, and 5 Minutes walk from town. Parking is on street with Parking Meters, Free after 6pm until 0900 on Weekends. The rooms were Basic, but adequately equipped, My Wife had an En-Suite Dorma with rooftop views towards the town centre. Her Friends room was similar. Breakfast I can testify was excellent as the Lady Owner kindly accomodated me for breakfast with My Wife and her friend. the Price was extremely competitive, and once the owner has finished renovating (probably done by now as this was 2008), it will be a very convenient place to stay. I did take a pack of business cards for distribution at my place of work as a favour to the owner, and I stand by the decision.. Very Pleasant.

It's also less than 10 minutes' walk to the main shopping area. The hotel itself has been comfortably refurbished, with gentle greys and greens. There's a guests' lounge and dining room. I had an Executive Double Room, which was very spacious and tastefully furnished, with a huge bathroom. The room had quality bedding and towels, and nice toiletries. There was a welcome tray to make tea, coffee or hot chocolate. The bed was very comfortable and I had a good night's sleep. Everything was very clean. There was lots of hot water and a great shower. The breakfast was a buffet for cereals, fruit, yoghurt etc, and a wide range of cooked items were available to order (I had a lovely cooked veggie breakfast). Gluten free options were available. Staff were helpful and very friendly. There is a limited number of parking spaces but the hotel tries to manage it to park as many cars as possible. Parking permits are available for street parking for a small fee. The only potential issue is that of noise from the single glazed windows - there's little traffic, but there are, of course, seagulls in the morning! It didn't bother me but might irritate light sleepers. Overall, though, I shall happily return there.

The lobby is beautiful, the staff couldn't be nicer and more accommodating, but the room itself is just....bad. It's old-it smells, everything is minimal and out of date. It was huge, but we only had wifi if we were sitting on the bed. The balconies were closed and the toilets were the slowest flushing things in the world. Honestly? I wouldn't be back until the rooms get renovated. The hallways were gorgeous and was super excited about our room-but unfortunately it is stuck in 1970-and not in a nice way

Get into the room and the view is brilliant but it's really old fashioned and looks like it hasn't been done up in 30 years, the bed was very comfortable but i had a sense that the sheets were not fresh, breakfast in the morning was 30 minutes late and cold, they managed to make a few mistakes with the order and some of the food could of been sitting around for a week . The customer service was helpful but not very fast. Overall I think it's somewhere which needs a bit of a spruce up and a more organisation. Would recommend only if you can get a very good deal and a room with a view, apart from that you could try looking at other hotel, The other half of our group had a room on the bottom floor which they could not change. Their shower leaked and flooded the bathroom, they woke up to an infestation of Woodside and spiders in their bed and the breakfast was totally wrong and made them sick. I got a room in the attic which was very cozy and felt more like a guest room in someone's house than a hotel room. Slight minus that the hot & cold water was in separate taps and the shower was hand-hold only. Though it ads charm, it also makes it feel a little dated. The breakfast was 5* and their restaurant is mentioned in the Michelin guide. That's definitely beyond the basic B&B food you'd expect. Another minus is that Wifi is an extra £8/day, but lots of hotels charge for that in Europe.
