I love the humble atmosphere and the rest of the welcoming staff. My hair looks amazing and definitely recommended this place and my stylist Michelle! I came across Haute Air because of a GiltCity offer I purchased, after a horrible service at the salon I used to go to I started looking for a new place for my blow-outs and decided to give it a try. Now, mind you I have 3a/3b curls and while I was making my reservation I mentioned I have curly hair and I was told that the person that was going to do my blow-out is a senior stylists and is an expert in curly hair. Maria was my stylists and part of my Gilt offer was a cut and she did a phenomenal job on my cut and my new hair looks great both curly and blown out. Even though I had great service here at Haute Air the reason for the 4 stars it's because whenever I go to a Dominican Salon even after a blowout they never use a straight iron on my hair. I did like that Maria mentioned that she's going to have to go extra hard on my roots because of my curls and I didn't mind at all but my Dominicans can give you a full blowout with barely burning the scalp and passing the straight iron in the end. I booked hair and makeup appointments here on the day of my 1920's themed birthday party. It was an $80 package for a 45 min. blowout and 30 min. makeup application. When I told my stylist what I was looking for, the manager (who was working on another client behind us) interjected with, "That's more than a blowout. That's $70. Wait - no, you have long hair. It's $80." I thought "retro waves" were covered in the blowout package. Apparently they weren't. Which, honestly - no big deal - I am okay with spending the extra money if that's your policy. But her delivery was gross, and inexplicably rude. Speaking of rude and gross, while my stylist was doing my hair, I watched the manager SNEEZE directly into the palm of her hand and then GO RIGHT BACK TO APPLYING MAKEUP on her client. SERIOUSLY WTF?! The makeup that my stylist used on me was out of what appeared to be her own personal makeup bag. She didn't use any clean mascara wands or applicators so nothing was sanitary. I'm totally on board with mixing and matching drugstore makeup & high-end makeup, but ALL of the makeup my stylist used was drugstore brand (most of it was NYC cosmetics, which isn't even a high-end drugstore brand). All of this seems to contradict the high-end image they are trying to project. My hair and makeup together was scheduled to take 1 hour 15 minutes. After 2 hours and 45 minutes, I had to leave with my makeup half done (although I paid for it in full) because people were about to start arriving at my apartment. It ended up being $120 before tip and I left stressed, frustrated, and with half-done makeup, wishing I would have just done it myself. Don't be misled by Haute Air's website, which features photos of women holding champagne - they don't serve any and they also wouldn't let me bring my own. I would never come here again and definitely not with a group or for a party because it's not a fun atmosphere and it took over twice as long as it was supposed to. read more

Wanted to update my review to say that 7 months later I was back for a haircut. Haircuts to me are like going to the dentist. I hate them and I was scared to go this time. I saw Vanessa again given she's now the only person in the city I trust for my blowout. One again she was amazing. I honestly couldn't have asked for anything better!!! Vanessa was an absolute please to deal with, sweet, kind, professional and listened to all my (fussy) requirements, going so far as using a particular color from her own collection to get the color I wanted! I wanted to love this place. But, I didn't get a chance before it was clear that things are not under control at this salon. I made plans with a friend to meet here for blow outs on my birthday. I used the online booking system to make our appointments and put the required 1/2 of the full charge deposit on my credit card. Three days before the appointments I received an email: "I am so terribly sorry for the inconvenience but I must cancel your appointment on October 2. By this time we should have been open, we were expecting to be open, we were counting on being open! The building we are in is still undergoing maintenance repairs which means that we will stayed closed until they are approved by the commercial building commission. We have been guaranteed that no matter what, we can re-open on November 1st, so I am asking you to please bare with us, accept our apologies and let us make it up to you as soon as we are back up and running again. I seriously never get blowouts, but after seeing a Gilt City deal offering one for a discounted price of $27, decided I wanted to try to make my hair look good for once. I had high expectations after reading all the positive Yelp reviews and looked forward to what was supposed to be a treat. Unfortunately, however, I have very mixed feelings about my experience. Right off the bat, I was put off by being told that because of my thick, long hair, there would be a surcharge of $10. Now I KNOW I have lots of hair and therefore it's harder for stylists to do their job, but I want to know about any additional charges upfront! I did my due diligence and it wasn't mentioned anywhere on the Gilt City voucher OR their own website! Not cool. I didn't want to argue about this though and forced myself to ignore the injustice. Things picked up after a decent wash, but immediately afterwards I was put off again during the initial blow dry. My stylist Maria was tired at the end of a long day I guess and as such enlisted the help of a colleague. I wouldn't have minded this so much if I was at least asked if it would be okay with me, but I wasn't and I sat in discomfort as the two women tugged on my hair in opposite directions. When it was finally over with, the styling process began and that was thankfully just one person, Maria. She asked what kind of a blowout I wanted and since I was woefully inexperienced, I took a look at some of the pictures they had on their iPad to get some ideas. After I flipped through the (literally) 5 pics they had, I decided to ask for the beachy waves after seeing how good the style looked on the Victoria's Secret model. But alas, I was told it wouldn't look the same on me because I didn't have layers. Le sigh. I found myself wishing they had more style pics to get ideas from, especially since there was no diversity of hair textures represented. Ultimately, I told Maria to just do whatever she thought looked good because I had already given up on making this a special experience. What resulted was a decent blowout, but nothing that wow'd me. I had a great experience at Haute Hair. Vanessa was fantastic. She gave me a great cut and blow dry, and really listened to my request to keep my hair length. While the setup is not quite as fabulous as DryBar, Haute Hair makes up for it with more personal attention, and great hair and make-up specials. Went here for a blow-out before a girls night out. Although the guy that did my hair was really nice and it looked great, I have to say I much prefer drybar for a blow out. Drybar has better prices and who can argue with a free drink while you have your hair done? Haute air was extremely confusing with their policy on drinking - we asked if we could bring champagne (we were celebrating a birthday) and were told we cannot bring it but could purchase it there, which was fine. When we got there we saw the champagne bottles behind the front desk and asked to buy a drink they said no. It was so confusing and awkward. Finally towards the end of our time there they said they would open a bottle of champagne but we were charged $10 each for it. I bought a Gilt certificate to this place because I was intrigued by the concept. A salon that specializes only in blowing out hair? Well then I should be in store for the best blow out of my life. As you can tell by the two stars it was not the best blow out. Here's a summary of my appointment: The good: The staff is very nice. I didn't have to wait and was put in a chair right away. Instead of magazines they hand you an ipad. At the end of the blow out they tell you how to take care of it so it lasts more than one day and give you a free shower cap. The bad: The blow out was poorly done and over-priced for what it was ($27 gilt voucher plus $2 tax fee). The stylist seemed to have no clue what she was doing. I have long wavy hair that needs to be thoroughly de-tangled before straightening with a round brush can begin. Product also helps. While the salon was stocked full of Bumble & Bumble products (which I love), none of them were used on my hair. The round brush was rolled into my hair and inevitably became stuck. A lot of painful yanking followed the stylist's apologies. That's fine, it happens to the best of us and at least we didn't have to cut the brush out...except that it happened again and again! Four times! How do you not learn your lesson? Either use a different brush or put in some product or do something besides continue to roll the brush into my hair and get it stuck! After 25 painful minutes I had the same blow out I get at the end of any regular haircut plus a whole lot of pain. It lasted maybe a day before starting to curl again. Considering their regular price for a blow out is $45+ I can't believe they have any repeat customers. I certainly will not be back. read more

They offered champagne or water which was nice. So, here goes the review. 1. The shampoo girl was amazing even though it was her first day. 2. The stylist seemed to not really know the look I wanted to I let her just do what she wanted. Bought a Gilt City voucher for $33 for a blowout with conditioning treatment (originally priced at $45 for blowout + $10 conditioning treatment). I booked an appointment for mid-day during the week and the place was empty. It's a small but cute place. I was asked if I wanted something to drink and my stylist asked what style I wanted. I was then led to the hair washing station and once the conditioning treatment was applied, waited about 10 minutes for it to take effect. I then received my blow out. Isis was great. She was friendly, knew what I wanted and checked in with me on how I was liking the styling thus far. I'm only giving 3 stars, despite liking the atmosphere and service because my blowout didn't even last my walk and train ride home. I'm not sure if it was the wind and humidity that took the body out of my hair or if it was my hair or what, but by the time I got home (and I went straight home from the salon) it looked as if nothing was done. I would come back, but only if there was another deal. I'd probably try a different blowout, knowing that what I wanted last time didn't hold up. I came here with a gilt voucher and 15 minutes late for an appointment (on valentine's day, no less!) and, to add insult to injury, the ladies were completely short-staffed, but they still managed to squeeze me in and make my hair look absolutely fabulous. I was also offered a peach bellini to top it all off! Aside from the bellini, however (which is always enough to win my heart), the actual blow-out was unbelievable, even though it was done pretty speedily. I asked for something voluminous and Kardashian-esque (my stylist, Crystal, gave me her trademark 'vamp' look), and I walked out of the salon with exactly that. Samantha give me a smooth and dewy base with perfect coverage that lasts all day and night. (No joke. I recently went to her for an 11 am appointment, after which I went for a birthday brunch, ice-skating, and then barhopping...when I got home at around midnight, my makeup still looked fresh. No bleary lines, smudges, nothing. Looked just perfect) Women of color: go to Samantha. Whether you are black, spanish, south asian, southeast asian, native american, etc--Samantha has got you covered perfectly, and brings out your skin tone(s) evenly and smoothly. Samantha also really excels at eye-makeup--whether that's a natural look, smoky-eyes, cate-eye, etc. Most recently, she gave me a beautiful light pink smoky eye with a cat tip (so glamorous, but also appropriate for daytime). The colors were blended so perfectly that you couldn't see any of her brush strokes, lines, etc. It was a 100% airbrush level, magazine finish. I am so impressed with what Samantha is able to do every single time. It comes to the point where I can just walk in and say do what you want! You know best! And I mean that. Not only will she give you exactly what you want and asked for, she'll also make suggestions and ideas that are turn out even better than what you could have imagined. I am giving Haute Air 4 stars because Maria is an excellent stylist. I have had my long, thick curly hair blown out countless times at many different salons and Maria is among the best. Maria has done my hair several times and I have absolutely loved the way my hair looked after each appointment. I have recommended the salon to several friends. The salon is small, but I have never had trouble getting an appointment. The customer service is also very good. Booking appointments online is very easy and salon staff return calls promptly. However, Haute air doesn't open until 11:00 am which is not very convenient for weekdays. I would have given Haute Air five stars if it weren't for the $10 surcharge for long hair. This is a recent change - I was not charged an additional $10 for my first few appointments earlier this year. Based on the $10 surcharge and inconvenient hours, it is unlikely that I will return to Haute Air unless they have another Gilt City promotion. The surcharge brings the price of a blowout up to $50, and there are tons of other blow-dry bars that charge less than Haute Air and are more convenient. I hope that Haute Air will rethink this policy. read more

My hair looks like a miracle shone down upon it. This is the first wonderful experience I've had with a stylist in years. When I walked in, they didn't have me booked for the time I had thought (probably my mistake), but it was only half a second before the wonderful young lady who checked me in told me not to worry, that my stylist would be with me in just a minute. She didn't make me feel awkward, or like I had imposed, she was more than welcoming and offered me something to drink, from champagne to water. Crystal was fabulous. She gave a mean scalp massage and offered me magazines, an iPad to fool around on while my conditioning treatment set, and talked with me about the condition of my hair. She wasn't fake, she cared about my requests and concerns, and she honestly made my hair look AMAZING. In fact, I had asked for something different until I saw the result of the girl whose hair was done before mine. SHE looked amazing too, so I asked for whatever she got. The results were natural, beautiful curls. I found myself looking for reasons to go out and do something I wouldn't usually do on a Tuesday because I felt so pretty. The vibe of the place is great. Very chic and minimal with tasteful accents. Comfy chairs (including the wash basins, thank god). Great people, not far from the subway, etc etc etc. I could go on for hours. The place is tiny, but cute. Everyone was friendly. Icie was very sweet and gave me a good blowout. She listened to what I wanted and checked with me throughout the blowout whether I was happy with the way it was coming out. (This is good for people who are really particular about the style they want, but I personally prefer to point the stylist into a general direction of what I am looking for, and let them take it from there to do what works best for my hair.) My blowout came out looking perfectly fine, just nothing to write home about. It looked better the next day, when the waves relaxed a little. As I was getting my hair done, I saw some other clients walking out with gorgeous blowouts, but they had really nice hair to begin with, so maybe that's the trick :) One thing I thought was odd at Haute Air is they seem to have a designated hairwasher, and the stylist won't wash your hair even if the washer is busy with another client. I only had to wait a few minutes for her to become available, so wasn't a big deal, just strange. While visiting NYC, we decided to get blowouts before seeing a Broadway show that night. All of our hair lasted well into the next day, and both my sister and I had gotten curls put in (hers with a curling iron, mine with a wand). The products used felt very "light", which was great, and the stylists were all welcoming and funny! Our only negative feedback is that we reserved our appointments a day in advance, but when we got there, one of the stylists was still busy with another (high-maintenance) client. She ended up using my entire appointment slot with the other client, so I had to wait until my sister's stylist was finished with hers so that she could do mine, which doubled our time spent in the salon. We're pretty laid back, but when another two girls arrived for their appointments and were told to wait because of the backup, they were NOT shy about letting the stylists know how upset they were (i.e., "this is completely unacceptable"). We didn't receive an apology for the unprecedented 45 minute wait, which would have been nice. Otherwise, nice atmosphere and the two girls who worked on our hair did a great job. Thanks! read more

A horrible wrong, beautifully righted. An hour after my review was written the owner Maria from the salon messaged me. She was very sorry about what happened and apologized to me on behalf of J. Maria was sincerely sorry about the cut and treatment I received at her salon and asked if there was anyway she could make it up to me. We set up an appointment 4 days later and she personally took care of me. Not only did she trim my hair to get it more even, she also styled it and gave me a full face make up session. And threw in another haircut session once my hair starts growing long again . And all of it she did for me for free! Maria as a hair stylist is amazing ! She took her time and really focused on my hair and tried to inform me about everything she was doing. She was great !! And since I haven't had hair this short in over a decade, she was very helpful and gave me plenty of styling tips. She also did my full face makeup. She listened to exactly what I wanted and the make up came out nice. The salon started getting busy while she was only half way done with my face. At this point I felt pretty guilty that I was getting my face done for free and now there were people waiting that were in a rush. However Maria still took her time and did not rush through one bit !! I left feeling so happy and Maria did such a great job taking care of me and my hair. After receiving the outstanding customer service provided this time, I would not hesitate to go back to this salon. Also the stylist that did the bad job on me is no longer working at the salon. J was very friendly, seemed attentive and made me laugh. He seemed like a nice person. I really hate to leave a negative review but this review is based on him as a professional hair stylist. Now back to my experience, I had very long and thick hair, and the ends were really fried. i told J that I needed a trim of about 2 inches, wanted layers and a v shape end. J responds by saying he HATES doing the V shape end on clients. Okay fine I thought even though it's MY hair I ended up having to compromise with him to do a round end. Which I don't even like. He washed my hair and after that started to de tangle it and part it for the cut. About an hour later when I saw the final results,I was devastated. He cut it shorter but all same length, no layers. So J said no problem I'll add more layers. Okay great I thought. He trimmed a little here and a little there. And I asked to look. Again I was disappointed. Just looked like one layer near the end and it was extremely uneven, the right side was ALOT higher than the left. I noticed he was getting frustrated with me so I asked him to take a picture of the back of my hair maybe it did look okay from another angel. He refused and said first he had to fix it more Then I thought okay so he said it looked fine but not okay enough to take a picture of it. Huge red flag!!!! He tried to explain that it didn't look even because he hasn't styled it yet. Yeah okay, when I get my hair cut it suppose to look even on both sides either way. And styling it the way I wanted, in curls, there would have been absolutely no way of knowing if the cut was done correctly. Seeing his growing frustration with me I felt bad but I am a paying customer and I'm here paying almost $100 for a botched hair cut for a very special day. He and the other stylist V tried to convince me that it looked fine. And the way he dried it effected the look of the cut. I understand not every cut comes out exactly how you expect but the job was done horribly, period. Realizing that they couldn't or wouldn't budge on how badly the cut was, I decided to not finish my styling there. I was going to go somewhere else and pay more to get it fixed. However V was very sympathetic, after I stated I was leaving and said she'd fix it for me. When she took over things got a little better. Haute Air - Makeup Artists Near Me

I visited Haute Air with a friend last night, for a pre-dinner blowout as part of a girl's day/night out. I LOVE blowouts and am a frequent client at Dry Bar, but we were going to be in Soho, so we chose Haute Air based on their location and their website, which advertised champagne and Bumble & Bumble products. I was expecting an experience similar to what I'm used to at Dry Bar - great service, champagne, beautiful space, beautiful hair. Yeah ... none of that here. First of all, the salon is TINY. So tiny, in fact, that when we we arrived 30 minutes earlier than our appointment time and were told they couldn't accommodate us (fair enough), we had to go across the street to The James Hotel because there was literally nowhere for us to sit and wait. When we came back, the entire salon was empty. Completely empty. It was just the two of us and three stylists, sitting around chatting. Yet, it was made clear that 30 minutes was allocated to us, and we would be done in that amount of time and not one second over. In fact, the stylist that did my girlfriend's hair wouldn't trim her bangs because he had "no time". Really? There was not a single other customer in the salon, and there was certainly no one banging down the door for his attention. I'm pretty sure he could have squeezed in five minutes for a bang trim. As for the blow-out, mine was fine. I have easy to style medium length hair that basically does one thing, so there's not much that can go wrong. Oddly, she did not put any product in my hair, even though I asked her to. She said maybe she'd use some "smoother" but then didn't. So much for the Bumble & Bumble! My stylist was friendly, but the others were definitely not. In fact, there was one Amy Winehouse lookalike that sat in the client's chair next to me the entire time alternating between rolling her eyes and glaring at me. It was weird. And when it was time to check-out, I had to stand at the counter for a good five minutes while Amy Winehouse and the receptionist finished their discussion of the Paleo Diet whilst eating handfuls of Tostitos from a big open bag sitting in the middle of the desk. Not cute. Receptionist girl did manage to stop chewing long enough to ask me how much gratuity I wanted to leave, so that was nice. I came in here with my girlfriend for a New Years Eve blowout since Dry Bar was completely booked. First off, the salon is tiny, people were practically stepping on eachother the whole time. Second, the manager was clearly only concerned with taking money from customers. My friend who had a make up appointment was not sure she wanted to keep it. When there, another girl asked if she could get her make up done and my friend offered her appointment to her. The manager said that my friend would still have to pay the $30 price even if the other girl took her appointment so the salon would basically be making double for the one session! My friend's make up took literally 10 minutes and she didn't even like it after. The stylist told her she was giving her a "daytime" look even though we were there to prepare for a New Years Eve party. We went home to add bronzer and darker eyeshadow to her. Third, they RAN OUT OF HOT WATER. I had to have my hair washed with freezing cold water and this is already on a freezing night in New York. I was told I would have to pay an additional $10 for my medium length hair. I asked if they could remove the extra charge since I had to get my hair washed with cold water and the manager refused to accomodate me. All in all, I would NOT recommend this place. For $60, price of blowout and tip, it was not worth it. At least at Dry Bar you can enjoy the fun ambiance and they offer you wine and mimosas. Client service is key at a salon! read more

booked an appointment to get a wash/blow dry before my birthday dinner downtown. I got there to find out the power went out and no one called me to cancel the appointment. The stylists had already left when I got there. I ran to 5 other salons in the neighborhood and because it was past 6 everyone was closing. I had to cab it uptown to wash and do my own hair and cab it back down to dinner. There was no real apology or help for finding me an alternative solution once I was there. Got a deal on gilt for a hair cut and blowout, went today during lunch to get it done... The salon is very small, and was sort of dirty. I'm sure most of the decor used to be white, but it could certainly use an overhaul. As soon as I got there I experience the eye rolling and complaining (mostly about how the online booking isn't working) and it definitely made me feel like I had done something wrong. There were also ZERO customers aside from myself there the entire time. The stylist sort of half washed my hair, and then cut it. He proceeded to do an AWFUL job blowing it out, put some mousse stuff in it and then used the flattening iron to get the frizz out (from the awful blow out) and to curl it. He then used a ton of hairspray in it. I HATE product, and NEVER use a flattening iron. Yes, I probably should have spoken up in the beginning but I guess i'm used to being asked before the stylist goes ahead with that. I can't rate the cut, yet, but all I wanted to do was brush the crap out of my hair and wash it immediately. I'll wait until tomorrow... maybe if I sleep on it it'll look better in the morning. read more
