I was pretty surprised that Dutch Yardworks didn't have a review on Yelp yet. This business is…read moredefinitely as good as it gets, and I think serves as a great example of what people are looking for in landscape construction. The owner/proprietor, Colin Bergsma, can be counted on to deliver. Hardscaping is expensive -- we had our first round of it done in 2001 with installing the paving stones we had pulled and relaid by Dutch Yardworks this year -- and I have to confess I wasn't happy with that first round, so when it became obvious that a do-over was approaching, I wanted to be sure that this would be the last time! I more or less stalked the Facebook page Colin has up for his company for a year, watching to see what kind of work he does and what sorts of comments customers give. There was nothing there to set off any alarms, so we approached Colin about the most urgent part of our deteriorating paver situation. He came to do an estimate and pointed out a variety of things that could be improved with a full re-lay -- and I'm not talking simple aesthetics, I mean big risks that we had basically been ignoring, such as ponding on our covered patio when we were planning to install a hot tub, and a retaining wall around our fire pit that was sinking and giving way. He gave us estimates for both the quick fix and the full enchilada -- the difference between them was substantial, of course, but we decided that it was time to make the investment, before our luck runs out and we have a flood on our hands. The first sign that we had chosen well was the installation of a port-a-potty. For a job that will take multiple personnel and literally weeks in the middle of a pandemic, I was immediately reassured that Colin had our privacy and safety in mind. Next, our existing bricks were pulled and stacked while Colin shot seemingly hundreds of transit lines to design the re-installation. Remember the heat we had this year? I admired the tenacity of the team, who only took weekends and evenings off. The next phase involved excavation of the site. Colin has some truly amazing excavation equipment in that it is narrow enough to fit through a 40" gate with room to spare. The areas were graded, and sand was packed down using a combination of hard labour and construction equipment. This sounds like it could be noisy, but my neighbours actually commented that they were surprised at how unobtrusive the work was to them, even for the long period it took. Finally, the pavers were relaid (with impressive adherence to the previous design, though with a few improvements), leveled, and spaces filled with polymeric jointing sand, which hardens when water is applied. This alone was a HUGE improvement to the previous installation which used sand that inevitably filled with grass, moss, and weeds, despite a lot of work on my part to try and prevent it. Now all I'll need to do is keep the areas clear with a leaf blower -- minutes per job rather than hours. Colin also installed drains, weeping tile, and ducts leading to the end of our yard, ensuring we'll have no more ponding on the lawn, which had been a problem because our property sits lower than all the ones around it backing on to the stormwater drainage lake. Finally, Colin created a swooping landscaped area against the fence where water runs down from other properties to the lake -- an area that had been perpetually soggy. He covered it in cedar mulch, and we are planting shrubs there, but I'm also happy with the easy upkeep for the future. This part was his design entirely, and will ultimately add a great deal to our privacy. We use our back yard a lot, and honestly it is our favourite part of living here. Colin and his crew made it so much easier and safer for us to keep up, and did it all with apparent ease during a heat wave. We hardly saw or heard from the crew until the job was done. I waited to post this review until I saw how the grade of the pavers held up after all the snow we had, and then the melt. The deck drains water onto the patio from above where it joins to the house, and I was pleased to see that even so, the areas closest to the house are dry first, indicating a strong positive grade away from the foundation. I am happy with every penny spent, and will call Dutch Yardworks again for any hardscaping we need in the future.
