I'm so appalled and concerned by the care or lack of that was given to my grandmother by people I…read moreuse to work side by side with, ones I looked up to at one point. It's hard for me to comprehend the lack of accountability(letting a CNA leave my grandmother unattached in a vehicle with the motor off while in Zaxby's), compassion for others(instead of assistance with feeding they claimed my grandmother was combative so they just didn't feed her, she lost approximately 100 pounds. At her new facility the first week she gained 1 pound and now 4 weeks in has gained 6 pounds), and disrespect this facility's staff has for their patients(the nurses smoking vapes at the nurses station with a patient next to them on oxygen, the administrator walking the halls beside patients puffing away on her vape). When a person accepts a management position you have to differentiate the friendships you've made with other employees because they are now your subordinates in order to maintain accountability in the workplace. There is none of that in this facility. If medical errors are made, management will lie to the families face, delete grievances/cover up for Nurses and CNAs under them, instead of taking corrective action to prevent these errors from occurring again(a tourniquet was left on my grandmothers arm for over 48 hours admin assured a grievance would be filed and an investigation would take place. There is no said documentation in my grandmothers medical record other than our families documentation that we took ourselves of this incident, no ultrasound, no venous Doppler, no doctor visit, NOTHING besides removal of the tourniquet. There could be permanent damage to her arm but nothing was done to ensure that her health was not compromised by this medical error. There was no teachable or corrective action, NOTHING, no effort of NOTHING. It is extremely sad to see what was once a great place for the elderly turn into a family's worst nightmare.

Let me preface this review by saying I am a therapist who agreed to do some PRN work at this…read morefacility. The recruiter raved to me about this facility and it's "5-star rating". I was excited to spend some time there. I worked two days total at this facility, and once I left on the second day, I was so mortified by the quality of care, cleanliness, and staff, that I swore I would not return. It bothered me so much, that I decided it was necessary to write a review and contact management. I should be clear; there was no personal event that led me to have hard feelings of this facility. It was simply the things I witnessed there that left me feeling so sad for the residents there. I watched as residents were talked about in front of them as if they were not there. As therapists sat around a table and gossiped while setting up patients in front of meaningless activities to pass the time of their therapy visit. Nothing was cleaned or disinfected. No infection control measures were taken. I had residents complain that they had been waiting hours for someone to help them use the restroom; but knew if they tried to go themselves they would "get hell". I witness a resident get yelled at for asking for a carton of chocolate milk. My heart just broke. There was no meaningful engagement with these residents. At this point in a persons life, the importance should be placed on the quality of life. Their families have placed them there entrusting that their basic needs are met and that they are being cared for by the staff. I am so baffled how this facility has received such a high rating.

If you're reading this I know you're having a hard time. But Big Bend Hospice is a really nice…read moreplace. You will have 24 hour access to your loved one. Parking is free and there are several restaurants in the area. The rooms are large and comfortable with cable tv and plenty of seating. The chairs fold into beds if you want to sleep over. My loved one had a private room and restroom with a shower. It's more peaceful than a hospital. There are fresh flowers and hummingbird feeders outside the windows. Watching birds compete with a squirrel for food was a welcome distraction. Unfortunately, the main gazebo was occupied by a smoker. But there are quiet places including a reflection room with a guitar you can borrow and outdoor seating throughout the space. A musician came by and sang to my loved one. Volunteers will occasionally relieve you if you don't want to leave your person alone. A church left a basket of snacks & beverages for the staff and visitors. There's a kitchen area with a full-size fridge, microwave and plastic utensils so you can bring or reheat meals. My loved one was regularly bathed and cared for. But it was difficult for me to grasp that patients aren't encouraged to drink water or do anything that will prolong life. The goal of hospice is to prioritize the patient's comfort and dignity and to support the family. The staff is accessible and caring with one exception. The first nurse I met was miffed when I asked about how often my loved one would be turned to prevent bedsores. But you have to advocate if they can't speak for themselves. Overall, I wish my loved one could have gone to BBH when there was still time to appreciate the surroundings. I recommend Big Bend and I hope this review makes your decision easier. Hugs!
