I've lived in the area since the early 90's (dating myself here) and have seen this park change quite a bit from a temporary cement stand still lot for the fair every summer to the re-greening of this area of what it is now. In the summer's this place is pretty beautiful, with the trees, and the greenery, but the additions they have made make it an interesting walk, and a place, whether to jog, walk the dog, play some ball, ride a bike, enjoy the mosquitos from the water, something is here for you.
With the demolition of some of the uglier pavillion buildings that was a start of what they planned, the revivial of Hastings Park. I remember playing basketball on brand new pavement along the Renfrew Street area beside the brand new opened skate park. As much as I don't like that portion of the park as it oddly brings graffiti, it allows those who are into that hobby(sport), it does keep them in one caged area instead of all over the park doing their thing. From baskeball to tennis, it's a nice place to play with the backdrop of the mountains to the North on a nice summer day just makes it worth coming out here.
There's a pretty cool fountain located near the basketball courts, and when the summer hits, this place is florished with greenery and flowers, and the water flowing gives it a nice zen like touch to put you in that zen like mood to pull a book out and read. Back in the day there used to be no water, man made lake, until now, and a few years back I remember that there was a guy who was playing a saxophone on one of the smaller piers on the water. That was a cool sight, and sound, and provided me a lasting image of this area. The water is a very nice addition, when your walking around you may notice some life in there, from the ducks to the tadpoles you can actually call this a park, from what cement parking lot used to be here.
Somehow when the fair is here (PNE) they incorperate the park area, gives it some twist but this park is best enjoyed when the fair is not around, fences not there, free admission, lack of excess people and garbage! So if you live around the area, need to walk off a meal, or get away and need a true park, come here and enjoy what I've been enjoying for so long. read more
