This is a great example of a diminishing breed - the old fashioned hardware store. Let's set the garden machinery part aside for now ; if you need something for the garden, plumbing, fixing all sorts of things, etc. these folks are knowledgeable and helpful as all get out! If they don't have it, they'll get it within a couple of days. They'll suggest an alternative, either higher or lower quality if you ask - for example I got a great laundry tub faucet from them - they didn't carry this one because of the cost, but 2 days later they had a made in US (and rebuild-able) faucet for me. Another example, I found a couple garden tools that other hardware stores, Home Depot, and garden centers didn't have, a couple months ago. Now the garden machinery - this may - I believe - be a separate business. I use them for my machinery, and they are neither faster nor slower than others I've used. But I've never had a problem with their work, and again I find them to be very helpful in finding solutions. They have gone the extra mile for me - when we had a huge snow, and my blower died - they lent me one to use (I had to bring it right back, so it could go out again). But that got me out of a huge jam, and no other place has ever done that for me. So, Hastings is my go-to place, I try to give them as much business as I can, because when establishments like this are gone, and only the big chains are left - we'll all be worse off. read more

Very poor customer service. My lawn mower sat for 4 weeks waiting for repairs. Fed up with the wait, I picked it up and they had not even looked at the mower. In that entire time my lawn mower sat outside exposed to the elements and was filthy. I specifically went here to spend money at a local business and in addition to my mower I also bought a new trimmer here at the same time, 2 years ago. The mower was taken elsewhere for repair and was returned within one day. I will no longer be a customer. I have since purchased a new mower, because I could not wait for them to repair my 2yr old Toro. My new mower was purchased at another local business that thankfully also services the Echo trimmer I got at Hastings so there is no reason to ever return. Called the store afterwards to express my dissatisfaction and they couldn't have cared less. Basically didn't want to hear what I had to say and rushed me off of the phone. I have recently took in a perfectly working mower that has had very little problems in the past for a beginning of the season tune up. Upon getting the mower back and OVER PAYING i ran into several problems directly related to their NEGLIGENCE. It was very annoying having to take the mower back once i got it home and found out it was not working properly. This has happened twice now plus added cost from the original tuneup price. On June 1, 2018 approximately 2pm I drove to Do It Best Hastings Hardware on Babcock Blvd with my lawn-mower. The front propel mechanisms were not grabbing Seventeen minutes passed before my presence is acknowledged. I ask for help removing the lawn mower from my car and I begin explaining how the front propel mechanism "is not catching" were my exact words. I explained how only recently the front propelled started to act up, nlow I have to push it. I further explained how when I depress the lever while the wheels are off the ground they spin but appear to be wobbly, however, as soon as I set it down in the grass to cut they stop, especially if I am facing up hill the gears appear to NOT BE CATCHING, as it will start to go and stop again. It in no way will pull up hill on grass anymore as it once did not so long ago. The man, with short white hair, noticed how I had removed the handle from the mower (still connected by cables) in order for me to fold it up to get it in the back of my car. One of nuts had fallen off one of the bolts that would hold the handles at the base. This was mentioned in passing but WAS NOT A PRESSING MATTER TO BE REPAIRED! I DID NOT DROP OFF MY LAWN MOWER TO HAVE A SINGLE FIVE CENT (.05) NUT REPLACED! THE MOWER WAS DROPPED OFF TO HAVE THE FRONT PROPEL MECHANISM TIGHTENED UP! I The man with the short white hair who waited on me was also in a rush. and was very preoccupied not listening to a thing I said! I got a lot of "ya" and "ok" nothing repeated back other than the man telling me it will be three (3) weeks. I figured, fine, as long as it gets fixed! I was told to go inside to the desk and get a ticket. I wrote my name and telephone number down on service order form, number 148200, was given a small green ticket and sent on my way. Nowhere on the ticket was it printed about a non-refundable drop-off service fee. Not once did the man with short white hair explain that there was a NON-REFUNDABLE DROP-OFF SERVICE FEE. I presumed that there would be a repair charge, parts and labor that I was more than willing to pay for a repaired front propel system on my lawn mower. On Monday, June 11, 2018 I called The man who answered, I never got his name, replied "didn't we tell you it would be three (3) weeks?" I said "yes, but I just wondered if you guys had a chance to at least look at it?" he responded "NO". I then replied, "What, I should call back in two (2) weeks?" He said "YES" he hangs up, no, thank you for your patience, no, sorry it is going to take that long, nothing, just CLICK! how rude! On Friday, June 22, 2018, I call again inquiring about the status of my lawn mower. A man answers, I do not know if it is the same man I had spoken to before, but I briefly explain that they have had my lawn mower for EXACTLY THREE (3) WEEKS TO THE DAY! He asks me, "When did you drop it off" I reply "June 1st". He then asks if I have a work order number, which I promptly give to him, 148200. He pauses, and responds "ok, we will take a look at it and get back to you." CLICK! On Saturday, June 23, 2018 I get the call from Do It Best Hastings Hardware, "your lawn mower is fixed and ready for pick-up", "GREAT" I asked how much it will be and for their hours. I was told Twenty-Eight Dollars and Thirty-Five Cents ($28.35) which I thought was super! I went down to pick it up Monday, June 25, 2018, I thought they fixed front propel on my lawn mower! I was handed the service order which I fully admit I did not look at I just went and paid it. However, not once did anyone say that the main issue you brought this lawn mower down to have repaired, we never touched it, we never called you to inform you it seems to be working for us "on concrete with resistance", could you give me details what it is doing or not doing for you? Not one call to tell me they will not be repairing anything dealing with the front propel. But I did get a call saying it is fixed and ready for pick-up! I get the lawn mower home right away I could tell the front propel is no different! I call to inquire and told I will get a CALL BACK at 3:30pm "Tom" calls me back. I explain to him that the front propel is the same as when I dropped it off. He responded, that it worked "on concrete and gave it resistance", whatever that means I asked if he took the wheels off to look at the front propel system? He said "there was no need" I replied, "what? There was no need? Of course there was a need! I brought it in to have the front propel looked at!" He kept responded he had it "on the concrete and gave it resistance". long story short they had my lawn mower for 3 weeks never addressed the problem replaced a single .05 cent small nut (when I never asked to have that replaced the missing nut was on a zip strip attached to the handle) and charged me $28.35 This m,an Tom laughed at me when I got upset I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO DO IT BEST HASTINGS HARDWARE EVER AGAIN!
