This past week we had the most unbelievable and horribly negative experience with this…read moreorganization. The young dog Odie that was posted for adoption last Saturday (4/25) caught my husband's and my eye. My husband has allergies and it's been very challenging finding a poodle mix at a shelter, so we were quite excited as we would love to "adopt not shop". However, it's been our experience that shelters such as this one make it impossible. We messaged the shelter that day on Saturday (4/25) stating that we would like to schedule an appointment either Monday (4/27) or Tuesday (4/28) with an immediate response of how "wonderful" that would be and asking for our phone number so their shelter manager could reach out to us to schedule this appointment. Sunday (4/26) came and went with no one reaching out to schedule said appointment, it does say online that they are closed on Sundays so we decided that I would call as soon as the doors open at 10 am Monday morning to get our appointment scheduled ASAP. This is exactly what I did, no one answered. I again reached out via Facebook messenger (at 10:07 am on Monday morning) stating that I had called with no answer (the call seemed to be answered and immediately ended so I was unable to even leave a voicemail) and that we wanted to schedule an appointment for that morning. Someone responded on Facebook (almost immediately) saying they had texted the shelter manager to call me but to please understand that they are currently moving into the new shelter so it may take a little bit. I figured absolutely, no rush if I am unable to get in contact with this shelter then no one else is either and I totally understand that they have other things going on/it's awesome they have this great new shelter they are moving into. I wait an hour and a half later (11:37 am) to attempt to call the shelter for a second time, again no response but this time I am able to leave a voicemail. At this point I also reach out via Facebook messenger again (11:42 am) to let them know that I have yet to receive a call from their shelter manager or anyone else and that I am very interested in meeting with this dog. Someone responds stating that they have asked the shelter manager to call me ASAP, that they are in the middle of moving, etc. Very similar response as the one I received from them over 1.5 hours earlier. I respond stating how much I appreciate it and that we're just so excited at the prospect of this cutie joining our family. At which point the person over Facebook messenger (that we had been in contact with all morning) let me know that the shelter manager told them that Odie had JUST been adopted. Obviously, this was very upsetting as we had been attempting to schedule an appointment for the two previous days and had been in constant contact with this person on Facebook messenger for about two solid hours at this point being told that they were essentially "too busy to get into contact with me" but somehow simultaneously were able to schedule an entire adoption appointment with someone else. I had been in town ready to meet this dog as soon as the doors opened at 10 am. This was transparently a situation where, for whatever reason, we were not given a fair and equal chance of meeting this dog or we would have been contacted when this other individual/family that supposedly adopted Odie was. I know several other people who have had similar situations occur and it's unfortunate that humane societies such as this one give others a bad name as overall the majority are outstanding organizations.

My suspicion was confirmed one day when I dropped something off and another person was there at the drop off point to retrieve something a relative had mistakenly dropped off a few minutes earlier. It was nowhere to be found. It's a shame that what would be such a good cause has staff volunteers keeping donated items for themselves.
