After a pregnancy complication that gave me a…read morestroke, I found myself living in their rehab house in Tarzana, CA, where my baby and my husband could not spend the night with me, being van-pooled to their clinic in Encino during the day for physical, occupational, cognitive and speech therapies. While I appreciate the way these therapies helped me recover, I did not like the way the therapists treated patients. For instance, I was often parked in a "relaxation room" by myself, to sit in a furiously vibrating massage chair in front of a TV that played a DVD of "March of the Penguins," one of the most boring films on the planet--a complete WASTE of my time--- and, outside of this room, when another patient cried inconsolably because she missed her mother and her fiancee, and I asked them to comfort her, they told me she wasn't experiencing "real" emotions but rather her distress was "a side effect of her brain injury." I found such a response incredibly heartless and absurd. "Even ANIMALS have REAL emotions," I wrote them. "It has been scientifically proven, so PLEASE do not say when one of us cries it's "just a side effect of our brain injury!" When the woman's fiancee or mother showed up to visit her she was calm and happy, so her tears were because she really missed them and felt like no-one at CNS cared about her. Also after they sent someone into my room in the rehab house at night to check up on me, waking me up and frightening me, I became paranoid so they sent me to a psychiatrist under the guise of "a routine review of your meds." The Psychiatrist (Dr. Jacobsen) grilled me angrily, asking me if I heard voices when no-one was around and if I believed people were talking about me behind my back. "I'm not paranoid schizophrenic," I replied. "Let me finish the questions!" he shouted. Well, after THAT horrible experience I BEGAN to feel paranoid---believing my husband and CNS were trying to have me committed to a mental institution! Luckily, after my parents informed my husband that I was feeling paranoid and they asked him WHY he was trying to have me committed to a mental institution, he confessed that the visit to the psychiatrist had NOT been "a routine review of my meds" but rather a visit to assess my level of paranoia from living in the house and to see if anything could be done with the help of medicines to alleviate my fear. I told him AND CNS that they must NEVER lie to me again. They replied, "We didn't consider it lying." I said, "You can call it what you like but you were being DISHONEST when you told me why you were taking me to the psychiatrist and you MUST be honest with me moving forward." Also, after my husband informed me my driver's license had been revoked because of my stroke (which it hadn't been) and I asked CNS' occupational therapist what I had to do to get my license restored, she said, "You don't have to worry about that." "But what if I get a job as a Film Editor in Television again?" I asked. "The studio will send a driver for you," she said. Studios DON'T send drivers for film editors! "If you're going to lie to a patient, at least make up a believable lie," I wrote on the "patient feedback" form I stuffed in their "feedback" box. I found their employees' glib response to such questions infuriating. Even if CNS doesn't think a patient SHOULD return to driving right away, CNS staff should educate themselves about the process patients need to undergo to clear to drive again and provide the patients with the correct information if they ask! Not long after I graduated from CNS (because my insurance would no longer pay them) I moved on to another home based rehab company whose OT guided me through the process of clearing to drive again which I did on my FIRST try. I remain grateful to that O.T.--Richard Gonzalez of OTOLRX!

Ascend changed our lives- my son's life. Our family is beyond blessed. If you are looking for the…read morebest treatment for your child, you will not find ANYTHING better than Ascend. Truly. Below is my letter to the Ascend team. Effie, It is not a mystery that you have an incredible team at Ascend. I could not be more grateful than I am. When Grant went into Ascend the first time, he was in a very dark place- his energy was heavy so much that it weighed not only him down, it weighed down those around him. He didn't believe in himself, nor anyone or anything else. The Grant who came out of treatment was as light as a feather. He was childlike again and it was the most beautiful thing I have truly ever seen. It was as though a miracle had occurred. And it did. I truly believe that it would not have happened without the incredible team you have and primarily, I owe it to Cynthia and Noah. Cynthia was an angel for my Grant. She was loving and nurturing; able to hold him accountable while providing him with truths that he was not able or willing to see prior to treatment. She did it in a manner in which he didn't become combative or hostile. She gave him a freedom from himself and helped to remove that weight he walked in the doors of Ascend with. And she put up with my lengthy, random, overly detailed, and overly explained emails. That in itself deserves an award. J And then there was Noah... From the very moment I met him, I felt assured beyond what any parent could possibly feel. His words and his positivity took any fears I had and threw them to the curb. I drove up that first day, heavy with concern and pain, to bring Grant his belongings. When I left, I flew down the 405 with the biggest smile and the greatest sense of calm than I'd had in nearly two years. In speaking with a dear friend, I was describing the means in which Noah affects the lives of those around him so profoundly. I would like to add that I speak of him to many because he has touched my life and Grant's life so profoundly. What he has done for Grant is unparalleled. As I spoke with this friend, an analogy came to me, bringing tears to my eyes and I felt compelled to elaborate and share it with you. Noah is a gift to the world. What he does and what he gives posses so much beauty. A beauty that cannot be taught. It is innate. And beauty breeds beauty. Noah's gift is like a piece of art or a piece of music; a favorite song. When I think about the way that da Vinci's Mona Lisa or Van Gogh's Starry Night or even Shepard Fairey's work (for me it's Gustav Klimt's The Kiss, Dali, and Fairey) have transcended generations and the manner in which they provoke emotion and perspective; awe and inspiration; the way they precipitate and propel change... and when I think of the way that I feel and the way my body and soul respond when I hear Michael Jackson's Off the Wall, The Beatles' Let it Be, The Stones' Paint it Black, Beethoven's Piano Sonata #14, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's The Message, Adele's Hello, Johnny Cash's Boy Named Sue... the list goes on. The art; the music. It changes us. It permeates our being. And where would we be without these gifts? THIS. This is what Noah does for others. This is the gift that he gives. And he doesn't even have to try. It's just who he is... It would be unjust if I did not mention the impact that the rest of the team had on our lives. They are a godsend.. From the moment I heard your voice on the other end of the phone, trying to give me all of the information regarding Ascend while simultaneously caring for your seven children at 8:30 at night, my heart was stolen and I knew that this is exactly where Grant needed to be. And then I met Alicia over the phone. What an amazing woman! I tear up simply talking about her. She is a keeper... My brief conversations with Dr. Acosta communicated to me that she is a compassionate and trustworthy person. The kiddos are blessed to have her on their team. Brittany is kind, thorough, and direct. As someone who always has more questions, I did not find that I needed to seek additional information. She is a great asset to the team, as you know. Grant really connected with Alex. Connections for Grant are priceless. I'm grateful for that. I thank each and every staff member at Ascend for all that they do and for the parts of them that they give away each day so that these beautiful children can have a life beyond their wildest dreams- whether that life be years away or simply around the corner. Thank you to you and your team for planting the seeds that you do and for changing and saving the lives of these precious kiddos. Especially my Grant. Blessings. Julie Olson

After speaking with several comparable treatment programs, multiple providers indicated that this type of charge seemed unusual and raised concerns. It's difficult to understand why a facility would bill insurance while also requiring substantial out-of-pocket fees that appear separate from the core treatment services. For families seeking help for their children, transparency and patient care should come first. Unfortunately, this experience left me feeling that revenue generation was prioritized over supporting kids and families during a difficult time. As a result, we have decided to pursue care elsewhere for our son.

What should be a…read moreprofessional, patient-centered environment instead left me disappointed and completely confident that I made the right decision to follow my physician elsewhere. I was contacted by a physician from the practice and told I could no longer see the doctor who had treated me for several months because he had supposedly "poached" me. He threatened me with legal matters... (sorry sir but I was in the legal industry for many years!) I'm an adult capable of choosing my own healthcare provider, and I found my physician myself. Nobody "poached" me. What concerns me most is that I was pulled into what appears to be an internal office dispute. Patients seeking mental health care should NEVER be put in the middle of workplace politics or made to feel responsible for choosing sides. DR Gibbs was ALWAYS supportive, responsive, compassionate, and genuinely invested in my care. I paid $180 per visit, but I considered his care worth it because of the professionalism and support he provided. I would gladly continue seeing him and recommend him without hesitation. The way this situation was handled, however, was unnecessarily aggressive and deeply unprofessional. I have no interest in returning to this practice or contributing another dollar to an organization that handles patients this way. My message to the team: keep internal disputes internal. Patients deserve dignity, professionalism, and respect. NOT to get involved in your office drama or pressure to take sides. Absolutely unprofessional and immature. To the doctor who called me. Consider this a coaching opportunity: as a healthcare provider, you should be building trust with patients, not putting them in the middle of internal conflicts. I'm grateful I found my physician, and after this experience, even more grateful that he is no longer with this practice. I'm now seriously considering whether this interaction warrants a report to the appropriate professional board. The entire situation was mind-blowing and completely unnecessary. I'm still livid about his choice in words and approach... sorry sir but I AM NOT THE ONE who you can call and bully over the phone!!!

One of the first things you do when you get to this or any other treatment facility is you surrender all of your belongings to be searched while you are at one of your lowest points of your life. The one expectation you might have is that they would return everything back to you once they searched it. This was not my experience. The people who searched my belongings stole a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses that were a gift to me and cost $160. The second item that was stolen was a gerber knife that I received on my deployment to Afghanistan. That item is not really replaceable because of the sentimental significance but if I wanted to replace it, it would cost me around $150. I reported these items stolen and they have done nothing to make this right. I was lucky enough to be transferred to Pheonix Rising for if I wasn't I most likely wouldn't be sober 4 months later. This is a fair warning to anyone looking for a reliable and honest recovery treatment facility.

He helped us sort everything out and made it a wonderful experience while my relative stayed at the facility. Thanks to him she was able to obtain the needed therapy and medical care. Thank you Gabriel!! Then there is Lynn, the Director of Nursing who was also most helpful whenever there was a medical issue that needed to be addressed with the nurses and or nurse assistants. Thank you Lynn!! Jordan, the Administrator will also step in whenever his help is needed and make things right. Thank you Jordan!! Cleanliness all throughout the facility is evident and very important in a medical setting. Meals are nutritious. And they also provide snacks. I believe it is important for family members to stay engaged and participate in the care of their relatives, to ensure an open line of communication with personnel and Management, to bring up questions and concerns.

It's not something I take lightly, and there are a lot of emotions and decisions involved. From the very first phone call, Gabriel showed a level of care and patience that I honestly had never experienced over the phone before especially before even visiting the facility. He answered all of my questions, and what really stood out was that he also asked thoughtful questions to better understand our situation. He helped turn what was a very stressful moment into something that felt calm, manageable, and reassuring. Because of that conversation, I already felt confident that my father would be in the right place. When I actually toured the facility, I was pleasantly surprised. It is very clean, very well kept, and you can tell there is real attention to detail. Most importantly, I truly appreciated how much care and compassion the nurses showed toward my father. That meant a lot to me and my family during such a difficult time. Gabriel, truly thank you. I couldn't have navigated this without your guidance and care. I can confidently say that if I or anyone in my family ever needs help with something like this again, you will absolutely be the person we call.
