OK... I CANNOT say enough praise about the Hartzell House Bed and Breakfast. This place is amazing! Kitty and David are absolutely THE BEST hosts. My two sisters and I (and our significant others) came to celebrate a milestone birthday and were beyond impressed with this place. The ambiance is fantastic! The courtyard is beautiful as well as the patio in the back. The decorating that Kitty has done throughout the inside of the house is really beautiful. And as David says, "We want to concentrate on two things: The bed, and the breakfast." And that is exactly what they have done here. Each evening, David will come to offer your breakfast choices for the following morning. And it's not just bacon and eggs people... these are GOURMET offerings all made fresh on site using fresh ingredients. We had a choice of a peach cobbler oatmeal that had peaches from the tree in the backyard even and it was delicious! There was also one addition that just made my stay even more superb... a little dog named "Jack" and he is the most precious (smiling) doggie that I have ever seen! So stinkin' CUTE! Anyway... if you are ever in the area (checking out Frank Lloyd Wright's work) you should definitely give this place a shot. They are phenomenal! Thank you David and Kitty! We had a wonderful stay at Hartzell House Bed & Breakfast this past weekend. Kitty and David were gracious hosts and the Inn was lovely. We stayed here for a few days on our way to Washington, D.C. Good choice. Our Patriot room was spacious and comfortable. It had a shower that would accommodate a wheelchair if necessary. The rest of the house is also beautiful, well-designed and peaceful. There is a lot of attention to detail. Kitty and Dave, the proprietors, are very nice people. They know the area well, make good recommendations, cook wonderful breakfasts (with options for vegans, vegetarians and omnivores). They are also very warm and caring and make great conversation. There are no negative reviews of Hartzell House, and having stayed there recently I can appreciate why that is. I am sorry that I cannot give Hartzell House six stars, but Yelp has only five, so that is the limit. The Hartzell House experience for my new bride and me was as good as it gets at a B&B. First, the food is excellent and put together with care. Second, the room is very comfortable with all of the amenities. Third, Kitty and David work hard to accommodate their guests and will do what is necessary. Fourth, the attention to detail is like none other. My girlfriend and I stayed here for one night before white water rafting on the Lower Yough the next day (a 25 minute drive from this B&B). The house itself is beautiful. The staff and owners are very friendly and accommodating. I asked them to set up a bouquet of fresh flowers and have it in our room when we arrived, and they followed my instructions to the letter. This is an excellent place for a romantic getaway or just to spend the night. The complimentary breakfast was absolutely fantastic, and the price was reasonable. We stayed in a gorgeous room with a ridiculously comfortable King Bed. The only negative things I can say are that the internet is pretty slow and it was a little warm in the bedroom (in August) without turning the fan on. Thanks Kitty and David! Amazing stay! Kitty and David are great hosts, very helpful and warm. We hadn't planned anything for the weekend we stayed there and they really took their time to suggest plans for the day. They recommended a cheese farm (Firefly) we loved and a hike to swallow falls that was wonderful to do in the snow. Everything was high quality: the sheets, the towels, the food. They even had a variety of board games. Breakfast was great because they gave us 3 options to choose from. All meals are homemade and recipes are created by Kitty and David. We loved our stay at HH. It has a very good location right along US 40, fairly central to many interesting spots in the area, including Fallingwater. Kitty and Dave did everything they could to make us feel welcome, and all the little touches like snacks in the room, a hairbrush to use, and a refrigerator filled with chilled water make this place feel more like a home. They know so much about the area and so we had plenty of things to check out besides our main attractions of usonian architecture. And the food. Wow. Everything was delicious, beautiful, and creative. I only wish I was visiting at the time they offered dinner for an additional price. read more

This review is long overdue. I stayed at Hartzell House about six weeks ago while visiting Falling Water and truly can't say enough good things about the place. The proprietors are absolutely lovely people and could not have been more accommodating. The rooms are very comfortable and every possible need has been considered. The overall experience has been well thought out in great detail. My friend and I enjoyed a delicious breakfast and some great conversation with our hosts and the other guests. Much of the food served is grown in the surrounding gardens and orchard...very impressive. Highly recommend! read more

Our experience with Hartzell House was fantastic from start to finish. The owners accommodated everything we requested, including our length of stay, time of arrival, and several dietary restrictions. The house is comfortable and nicely appointed, with various rooms and settings. The food, despite our restrictions, was excellent - we had the pizza dinner with a special salad, and a very tasty breakfast. The owners were very friendly and helpful with suggestions on where we might venture to, but the house was so comfortable that we were glad we didn't try any of the neighboring restaurants. It was a relatively short drive to Fallingwater. I would highly recommend this place. read more

We had a *wonderful* stay at Hartzell in early April just as they were opening for the spring season. We were visiting the area to see all the Frank Lloyd Wright homes, and we will certainly come back when weather gets a bit warmer to hike and take advantage of the beautiful area! David was a warm, truly magnificent host. From the moment he welcomed us in, we felt as if we were staying with friends. We got a tour of the historic home and were shown to our room. All of the rooms are tastefully decorated, quiet, very comfortable beds -- and all the amenities you would expect in a hotel. In the evening, David laid out a selection of menus for local restaurants (and included driving directions)! It was such a small, thoughtful gesture that made our planning for the evening so much easier. David also took our breakfast orders and was up early to ensure we had a full hearty meal before we headed out for the extra-long early morning tour at Fallingwater. David and his wife take clear pleasure in using local, organic ingredients and experimenting with delicious combinations. We both had a savory oatmeal that was DIVINE. I never thought that home-smoked sausage could taste so good on oatmeal! (And I will be hard pressed to find something as delicious as what David whipped up!!) If you have food allergies, rest assured that David and his wife are more than able to accommodate; multiple options on the breakfast menu can be gluten- or dairy-free. I *highly* recommend the Hartzell House to anyone needing a place to stay in the Ohiopyle area. We certainly hope our travels will bring us back to stay again soon! read more

Definitely worth the climb out of the valley if you're riding the GAP! The house is really pretty, with nice rooms -- but the draw is the food! We stayed 2 nights (because we tarried to see Falling Water - not far away), and had two magnificent breakfasts and one delicious dinner. To be fair, this was my first time at a bed and breakfast, but I think Hartzell House has set some VERY high standards for my next B&B experience. The hosts, Kitty & David, were SO friendly and warm. It was impossible not to feel like I was at home. The entire space is so inviting and beautiful, with tons of charming little details through the entire house. The room we stayed in the "Artist's Suite", which was spacious, sparkling clean, and SO comfortable. To many of you this will be an insignificant and possibly stupid detail, but I NEVER KNEW SHEETS COULD BE SO COMFORTABLE. I realize now... that I've lived like a barbarian, sleeping on sandpaper sheets, subjecting my entire body to the nonsense that I've been sleeping on until this point. When I got into that bed with lush, sateen sheets, the whole world melted away and I actually felt like I was sleeping in a cloud. A very silky, warm, squishy cloud... I was immediately lulled into a sleepy stupor. But that might have been the delicious bubbly that Kitty so helpfully provided, along with a very lovely bouquet of pink roses and lilies, to aide my husband in surprising me for this celebratory getaway. WHO DOES THAT? And I don't even know where she got the champagne from, because this place doesn't appear to be too close to many wine/liquor shops, so I'm pretty sure this required significant effort to pull together for us. Extraordinary hospitality. I HAVEN'T EVEN GOTTEN TO THE BREAKFAST. OH MY GOD THE BREAKFAST. Greek yogurt with fresh pears and raspberries and ginger syrup. Shirred eggs baked into a bread cup, with a basil-garlic cream sauce. Stuffed french toast with goat cheese, fresh berries and kiwis, drizzled with homemade ginger syrup. If I had the money or the people skills, I would try to stay with Kitty and David in that house forever. I'd try to be as adorable as their three pups, which would be nearly impossible, BUT I CAN TRY. JUST GIVE ME THAT BED AND BREAKFAST. read more

Everything about Hartzell House exceeded expectations: the food was delicious, Kitty and David were gracious and accommodating hosts, and the space itself was way better than we would have gotten at a hotel On this trip we used the Hartzell House as part of a trip to Fallingwater, but on future trips I would come back to the area (a ~3.5 hr drive) just to stay at Hartzell House again. Food-- David: I'll ask again, are you sure you aren't a trained chef? At a typical B&B I would expect something simple and homey. At Hartzell House, I had a meticulously prepared and plated breakfast that was not only delicious, it was a wonderful experience in hospitality. Presented with several breakfast options, we chose the Reese's peanut butter pancakes and the mushroom and shallot quiche. Before these even came out were were given a first course of David's homemade glazed orange scones and a cold fruit salad of fresh mangoes, oranges, and peaches. The pancakes were served surrounded by homemade jam and garnished with a homemade chocolate-covered raspberry. The peanut butter was baked into the batter, but didn't take away from the fluffy pancake consistency. The quiche was a unicorn: the inside was cooked all the way through without losing any moisture and the crust was flaky and not soggy at all. It was stuffed with fresh mushrooms and shallots, and as a guy who normally gives quiche a pass, I would order again...and again. In addition to the food that we were served formally, we had a cheese plate delivered to our room. It came with ~8 different cheeses perfectly portioned to the two of us, along with oranges, apples, and raspberries filled with fresh honey. The cheeses were impeccably curated by David and Kitty and varied enough to make us feel that eating the cheeseplate was one of the highlights of our weekend. It was delivered by Kitty as I was getting the rest of our bags from the car, and she introduced my girlfriend to the cheeses and added some fun by suggesting that she have me guess the flavors that were in each unique slice. Finally, the whole house was jam-packed with snacks and drinks, including some homecooked items. When we got back from our travels and the kitchen was closed, it was so relaxing to have access to fresh cinnammon rolls, fruit, and tea/coffee that we could help ourselves to. Hosts-- David and Kitty were available, helpful, and cheerful from even before we walked in the door. (We worked with them to pre-book tickets to Fallingwater). They were present to greet us when we walked in and were very clearly intent on making sure that we had a wonderful time on their property. They added tons of little touches of hospitality, from the snacks, to the glass of wine (gratis) they offered us when we came back in the evening. They also checked in with us several times when we were eating (and not in an overbearing way) to make sure that we were happy with the experience. I particularly appreciated when David saw how much I had enjoyed the pancakes and mentioned that he might have some "extras" if I wanted any more. He then went into the kitchen and made another serving specially for me. Space-- The B&B itself has clearly been a labor of love for both of them, and each space is put together thoughtfully with relaxation in mind. Public space includes a living area, bar area with a pool table, and two beautiful garden areas (they grow a lot of the food they serve). Even with the space at full capacity, there are plenty of nooks to relax in privately. Our room (Artist suite) was unique. It was about the size of a hotel suite (with a queen bed and a couch/sitting area). However once again the details were key. The sheets and the bed were clean and high threadcount, and the sitting area was perfectly set up with our cheeseplate when I walked in. The bathroom is unattached, but private to the Artist suite and includes a large jacuzzi tub (yes please). TLDR: This is a destination in itself. Will likely drive 3.5 hours just to stay again. read more

Greatest B&B we have ever stayed at!!! Catered to my allergies and still had ,hands down ,the best gluten free breakfasts we've had from anywhere. Belgian waffles with fresh ginger syrup, GF quiche and homemade pastries w/ fresh fruit. The rooms were in perfect order, and very,very,very clean! Nice big common area to play a game of pool,and we were offered a glass of wine in the evening. Cant say enough about it ,it was the perfect relaxing getaway. We stayed in the Artist Suite and the pictures don't do it justice, it is very roomy and open with a private bathroom in the hallway. We can't Waite to go back!!!! read more

Great place to stay if you find yourself in the area or as a destination. Easy drive to multiple ski resorts, Nemacolin Resort, Fallingwater, Flight 93 Memorial and other attractions. The owners are some of the nicest people you will encounter in the B&B business and made our stay something to remember. Although some of the historic character of the home is no longer present due to renovations and additions, we still enjoyed the charm and details that were preserved (we're old house nerds so we had to criticize something). The breakfasts were something you would expect from a 5 star restaurant. Considering the quality of the breakfast and many other free amenities this place is a steal (some rooms go for as little as $115 a night.
