Yes we went to Harter House as a different store didn't have the cuts of meat we wanted. So Harter House had these delicious filet mignon, 2 chicken kabobs, paremesan encrusted tilapia filets. We went to the Eastgate location which was closer to us. Either store has an outstanding meat counter. WOW! These people are crazy! I called to find out if they could sell "dinosaur Ribs" so-called because they are the whole rib from beef. The person answered by saying "oh, yes, let me do that immediately!", then hung up. After calling again, they connected me with a financial company. On third call they said "well, we could carve a "dick bone" for you. Most unprofessional contact I have ever had with any company. Say way from these jerks! read more

This grocery store is quite small inside. A few of the aisles are pretty narrow for a grocery store and then in other areas of the store there's more space to navigate a shopping cart and yourself. I noted that a few items that I was shopping for specifically were higher priced than what I would pay typically at other grocery stores. But I did find and purchase some items that were on sale at a fantastic price. 4 pack box of unsalted sticks of butter, extra sage sausage and seasonings. I like this small store but based on both its location and prices on some staples it would not be my main place to buy groceries. It was noticeable though that the store employees were very friendly. I would definitely pop in here again. read more

Came in quickly to pick up essentials for sick ones. I only needed crackers and Gatorade. I have never been in a HH before so I expected to be somewhat lost. I found the Gatorade easy enough but those darn crackers eluded me. Where are you ?!? I was close to having a Steve Martin type meltdown a la " Father of the Bride." I am sleep deprived from taking care of a very sick family so my current patience level is dangerously low. The snacks, crackers and chips happen to be to the right of the cash registers. I never thought to look in this corner of the store. Whew ! I overheard the butcher stating they are open on Thanksgiving, that is great for customers but stinks for employees. I have shopped at Harter House for years. I usually shop at the Eastgate store. I was close to the Republic store so I stopped there. I have never had a bad experience until then. The butcher was so rude and obnoxious to me I just walked off. read more

Things are overpriced but they always have been and we know it. It's the only good place to get meat, though. Cashier Adele is outstanding. She really knows how to take care of customers. Harter House needs to recognize her. The little manager boy with the mustache- not so much. read more

upon walking up to register and putting my 2 items on belt cashier volunteered to get next register smokes and walked off. went to another register and commented on service cashier heard me and made comments upon saying called you out on your unprofessional walk off and register 2 who she was doing job insulated me verbally for miss pronouncing her name calling me uneducated. this is while my cashier can't give me change on a 10 dollar bill and waiting on change at that point I am upset. asked for manager no response l left. Harter House is a locally owned grocer that specializes and is known for their meat department / butchers. They offer an amazing selection of meats, poultry, fish, and prepared meats for simple baking. They also have a full grocery and wine selection. All is VERY reasonably priced - no need to buy your meat here and then buy the rest of your groceries at another store. Service and staff are A +++ Be sure to support this local gem! read more

I purchased ribs from Harter House on 7/1. I opened them and they smelled horrible, the expiration date was 6/29. I called and the guy in meat department said they were outgassing. I cooked them and they and were horrible. Tasted old. I gave full price and very disappointed in response that they would be fine. Worst ribs ever. Brand was Prairie, I've bought at Walmart and were were good. Very disappointing. Never buying meat there again. No longer legendary for their meats any more. read more

I have grown up eating Harter Houses's deletable meats. My dad used to say "if that steak is not from Harter House - it's not worth my time to light up the grill." So, I have fond memories of all the wonderful meals I had growing up, which usually meant a delicious meat among the main dish. Now, as an adult, I will not buy meat from anywhere else. Michelle is a friend of our families and I have noticed, they treat everybody like they're family. I cannot say enough good things about the store and it's staff. The butchers shine behind that meat case and will help you with anything you're having questions about. Grilling time is coming, so grab some steaks and light up the grill. PLEASE READ. I can't even give this store 1 star. I shop there on occasion, and the last few visits have been incredibly disappointing. Each time I go to check out, I see teenage workers chatting and blowing off customers and their jobs, while older workers are on the floor restocking, organizing, and focusing on the customers. Those are the workers who want to be there and need that job to stay on their feet. But it's heartbreaking to see chatty teenage workers receiving the same hourly pay as their hard working coworkers. I saw several employees chewing tobacco on the job, which is very unsanitary and definitely unprofessional. Even a manager I spoke with during one visit was very standoffish and did not seem to consider anything I was saying. 10/10 do not recommend. read more

I was looking for 73/27 ground beef so I called HH and asked them if they carried that mixture. They told me no but they could grind if while I waited. I drove to the store and told the meat person what I was there for. Another guy told him to mix up some "fatty" ground beef. I was in there less than 5 minutes and they handed me the package of ground beef. I thought that it was very fast but had to trust it was right. Well I grilled that ground beef this weekend and it was not 73/27. Now your a butcher and you don't know how to make 73/27? It was very lean with hardly no fat. I have always used this mixture for grilling because the meat is so juicy. 80/20 or 93/7 is too lean and not a lot of juice. I will never waste money at HH. read more

If you want meat, including seafood but ESPECIALLY steaks... in Springfield, GO HERE. If you want high quality food for special events... GO HERE. Heck, if you want a gorgeous whole leg of lamb that is not overpriced, go here, too... check out anything that is overstocked since the prices tend to be marked down.... and go right after a holiday and you'll find really good deals on turkey that someone didn't buy as planned. Harter House is fantastic... they carry brands you won't find at Wal-Mart, and they have GREAT workers... management that is friendly and helpful... and consider this... you can spend less per pound for poor-quality stuff that you'll feel hungry an hour after eating, or you can get high quality food that will keep you full and give your body 3 times the usable nutrients (real bread, for instance, instead of fortified stuff from which the fortifiers aren't even digestible... geesh...)... If you don't go for any other purpose, get your meat here. It's seriously phenomenal... the top quality stuff... At least it was for the 5 years I used them faithfully. Springfield's absolute best, for sure, even if they're small... small because they don't sell a lot of junk. I am a-ok with small when it's for that reason!! read more

So sad. I have always patronized HH for its meats and small family store feel, but they have not educated their employees well about safety during corona. Two employees (of the 4 I saw) had their noses hanging out of their masks and they wore none until it was mandated. One today was working the meat counter! It is sad, but I keep thinking I've just been there at the wrong time with the wrong employees, but regardless of time of day, there is a disregard for public safety. They don't care for my safety, so I regretfully need to take my business elsewhere. Very sad. read more

One would think a business that you have frequented for over 25 years would continue to provide customers service that has always been the norm. But sadly today will be the last I will ever enter their doors. The meet department is rude and self serving with no regard to basic human curtesy. When one employee, Michele tells you what to do and what is expected by their store to have another yell and be in general unkind in this time of pandemic is unacceptable. You should not be verbally abused by another under any circumstance. I love this grocery store. It's always clean, well organized and well stocked. They have great specialty sections of foreign food and delicatessen, great meat counter and the staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. Customer service at the meat dept is gone out the door. I'm sure it depends on who you get but it's disappointing. When you tell them what you want & how big, it's in one ear & out the other. More like you'll take what I give you, or act they act disgusted when I see the weight is way different & I ask them to weigh another. This goes for east & west stores which I recently visited both the same day. This is a far cry from when my father in law started harter house meat market. This place is phony. They say their meat is so good. It's not! I've purchased beef tenderloin here a couple times and it is always tough. I bought the same cut of meat at Hy-Vee and it melts in your mouth. If you want excellent top notch beef go to Hy-Vee. People that think Harter House has great beef don't know great beef. Upscale grocery store. Very cool old-fashioned feel. Small but well stocked, and the adjacent international foods market is fantastic. They have authentic gelato, sold near the bakery, which is well worth a try. Their meat department is like something out of a vintage photo shoot; friendly butcher and counter people in paper hats. Excellent quality meat. This store is top notch but everything is priced accordingly (which is the reason I don't shop Harter House regularly - too hard on the pocketbook) but this is a first rate establishment deserving of 5 stars. read more

Decent store. I like the "food of the world" type section of the store. I'm sure the meat is good, although I'll have to try it another time. I just needed some staple items. This store is close to my house and is the easy place to go get something. It is a smaller store so you don't have to walk a city block from the produce to the milk and eggs. The staff is always friendly and helpful. They have recently redone the layout and opened it up quite a bit. Everything is still there just not in the same place it used to be. The redesign was not my favorite thing while it was going on because one of my favorite things about this store was knowing where everything is located. Now that they are done with it I have to say they made the store much nicer. Bravo Harter House. read more

This location has good variety. The workers are always friendly at the check or butcher areas. As with all Harter House's the prices tend to be a little higher than other stores. They do have the standard items that are the same everywhere you go which helps if you are passer by and your spouse calls you to pick up some random item. You can always find what you are looking for. The only negative is that the layout is a bit close. There seems be less room in the aisles and generally around the store which may lead to sporadic fits of claustrophobia. read more

Harter house is HANDS DOWN, our favor revolve to shop for groceries and household products. I am all about buying local, and they make that decision so much easier! Never once have I felt like a bother like I do at many major companies and retailers, all of the staff are always very eager to help with whatever I need. This is the ONLY place we buy meat. It is very fresh and delicious. After purchasing our groceries, the staff always asks if they can help assist me to my car, they will load and Carey the groceries if needed, and they always do it with a smile on their face. I'm so thankful to have a place to shop like this! read more

Greg in the deli was a huge help making recommendations and ensuring our order was done on time, the bakery helped me find an alternative to something that was out of stock due to holiday demands, someone walked me out to my car, plus smoothly processing several purchases for our company. Most people don't think about grocery shopping as a good or bad experience-it's just one of the things you have to do. But if you run into some snags in a time crunch...it gets noticed. Or if you have an experience like I did that sets a business apart you suddenly realize what your missing. This was clearly a very busy day for their team yet we were still so well taken care of. You're going to love Harter House! It's a small grocery store that really goes out of their way to make you happy! Their meat and deli counters are really Awesome! They give you the old fashioned service like in the old days and they wrap your meat for you in that really nice freezer paper so you don't have to do that chore when you get home! Their meats are superb and full of flavor and not too expensive, either! The store is always really neat & clean, too!
