I used to enjoy shopping at Greene County Freight & Food Sales, but my opinion changed after a recent visit. As I was leaving, I asked to purchase a pack of cigarettes and was told, "We do not sell cigarettes." This confused me, since they have a smoke shop and sell other tobacco products. The response didn't seem accurate, and it left me feeling frustrated and disappointed. If there has been a policy change regarding cigarette sales, that's completely understandable--but a clear explanation would have gone a long way. Unfortunately, the interaction left a negative impression, and because of that experience, I've decided not to shop there again. Customer service and clear communication matter, and this experience just didn't meet that standard. read more

The employees were great. They helped me find what I was looking for and took good care of me. The prices can't be beat.

They're pretty nice people and they have an interesting selection of things. Pick up some car parts or some breakfast cereal maybe a gallon of sweet and sour sauce and a taser. Don't forget some smokes and chew on the way out. I guess the prices are okay. My wife always seems to find something to buy there. It's an interesting time if you like to people watch. Once in a while they do have something pretty cool on the shelf, but sometimes I wonder where it comes from. Don't get me wrong, it's all been good so far I just haven't seen some of it for years. Like I say, the wife seems to think the prices are good and if you like to watch people here's a pretty good place to do it. Makes you feel grateful for what you have. read more

They do have excellent deals, but they have a tendency to overcharge, never undercharge. They have a senior citizen discount on Wednesdays, which is great, but the overcharging usually wipes out the discount. read more

My favorite store to shop! They have food items not available else where! Fun to try new food! Many are half off what they would cost elsewhere too! Pies, canned vegetables and soda, chips, crackers, candy bars, cheese, frozen foods and meat! Pepperidge Farm and other name brand bread items real cheap! I have never bought anything that was bad! Use common sense, if it's outdated. If you know you will use the item up soon, it will probably be fresher than ever! Boxed milk is good 1 year after the use by date! I bought delicious chocolate oat milk 2 for one for a year, then it was gone from store. Also buy greeting cards, Christmas cards, socks, hats, phone chargers, tin signs, and gifts there. Wednesdays 10 % off for Seniors food items! Employees are very friendly and helpful! Store is organized and clean! Only store I went in all through Covid! I tell everybody about them! As soon as we get in the store they told us right away to not open and close the lids of thier plastic cups unless we purchased them, which I understood to a point cause I had children with me and maybe they didn't want them to break them. I'm holding hands with my daughter walking down the first isle and she coughs one of the woman working there mumbles " ooh my gosh! " i look at her to see if that was toward us cause it was only us shes looking at us with a look of disgust. She's seven and I'm kinda in awe, my nine year old is behind me and says "he keeps getting mean looks from the lady that told us about the cups" I go up the second isle and realize I've got like five woman that work there that are watching us acting like they are working I felt so uncomfortable I shrugged my shoulders and said"what is the problem" thier reply was we don't like you opening things realizing I had opened an old serum bottle on the first isle to see if it smelt bad. They say for safety reasons but thier selling expired and not sealed things. I told the ladies how they made us feel and that ive never felt so degraded like a criminal in all my life over cups "well leave" is what I got told The ladies told me I was being watched from upstairs for what I don't know maybe I look like someone that has gone in there before but this is the first time I've ever been in there. Just about every town has at least one of these: a scratch-and-dent grocery store that buys crates of food that fell off the truck, or that have passed their sell-by date, and puts any still-good items on their shelves at a discount. This is the one that you'll find in Springfield, Missouri. (Or at least 3/4 of it is. About 1/4 of the store is a tobacco shop--but since I don't smoke, I can't meaningfully review that portion.) THE GOOD: If you're looking for cheap, you'll find it here. This is one of the favored refuges for college students who are sick of ramen, and the out-of-work or the elderly trying to stretch their food stamp budget as far as it will go. As with most discount places, you do need to have a sense for what things should "normally" cost, because some of the deals are not as good as they appear. Due to the odd-lots nature of supply, many of the items the store carries change constantly. In particular, there is a lot of variety in the canned or bottled beverages available at any given moment--often including selections not available elsewhere in the Springfield area. In the past I have found such exotic beverages as sangria-flavored soda pop, spicy-hot ginger beer, and bottles of Coca-Cola with Mexican labeling. Forrest Gump would compare the store to a box of chocolates--you never know what you're going to find! There is a decent selection of canned goods, soups, vegetables, meats, and other groceries, and also a small frozen and refrigerated section for meats and dairies. There are also sections for dry goods and other non-food items such as trash bags, detergents, et cetera. There is usually a really good selection of candy of all sorts, including both off-brand and name-brand, and some of it is available by the box. Many name-brand candy bars are available for 25 cents for normal size, 50 cents for "big" size. THE BAD: The store is a bit dingy and a bit poorly organized. Also, the variety can work against it, as you are never sure whether you will really find what you need. As is often the case with surplus or dollar stores, there is a lot of junk. THE UGLY: Check the sell-by dates on EVERYTHING perishable you buy--even canned goods. A month or two out is probably not too bad on most things (save for the highly-perishable stuff like dairy), but I returned home from my trip there the other day with canned tomato soup that expired in August, 2006! (I had to throw it out.) Especially check the age on your candy bars, as chocolate dries out and gets nasty in just a few months. All sales are final, so if you buy something badly out-dated, you are probably out of luck. In conclusion, Green County Damaged Freight is a decent place to try to make your dollars go farther, and fascinating enough in its selection that everybody should spend some time poking through it at least once--but caveat emptor definitely applies. read more

What's here... well, lots of candy bars at good prices. I bought some and they were just as good as the one's you pay 12 times more... They have a good selection of cereals and canned goods. There's some of the standard American cheeses but no yogurt. I wasn't stocking up my pantry at the time, but did notice a lot of things I could have bought if I was. Nothing i did buy was bad or off. There's also quite a bit of hard goods - I bought a wall thermometer there very cheaply. And a huge selection of tobacco products, not that I would be buying any of them... read more

I've shopped here numerous times, in fact I don't visit Springfield without stopping in. I completely agree with most of Chris M's review except to say that canned goods vary greatly in how long they are good past their Use By date. Tomatoes, being acidic, will go bad first. But I have opened cans of other vegetables, beans and fish that were fine even 8 years beyond the expiration. Keeping the cans dry and cool (never freeze them) helps, and minimal denting is best. The other review neglects to mention that there's a 10% Senior Citizen Discount day. If memory serves, that would be every Wednesday. The attached tobacco shop is a good one, has everything a smoker could want at reasonable prices - and that's saying a lot since the huge increase in federal taxes on tobacco that went into effect April 1, 2009. read more

I love this place! It is great for any parent that must provide a daily snack for a small child in grade school or pre-school. You can get snacks individually wrapped or in bulk for the whole class at a fraction of the cost of a typical grocery store and their prices on this type of food usually are lower than any other store in town! Yes, you do have to look at expiration dates.For the thrifty shopper though this place is as close to heaven on earth as you will get! I have been to a few smaller damaged freight places in Springfield and none of them hold a candle to this one. read more

I am reviewing the smoke shop. Sometimes you can get good deals on stuff here. Not always. But don't go there if you're in a hurry. The employees tend to stand around and yip yap with the customers about the latest tax increase or other excuse which "cause" them to have to raise their price. It's like they are constantly justifying themselves. They try to make it look like they don't make a profit, and that they sell cigarettes and tobacco because they are nice guys. The atmosphere there is green-jean wearing okie doke back country hick type and you'll notice that it's always the same 2 or 3 female clerks. Their daily uniforms consist of tank top wife beaters and sandles. However, you can't go there on the weekends because they are stricktly open monday thru friday 830 to 5pm and sometimes open saturdays, sometimes not. You just never know. But you can save money on tobacco products most of the time if you get the right products. I don't mind going there most of the time. I just wish they would take care of business, and quit jibber-jabbering. read more
