Maybe its better. The vibe in the business is pleasant. We gots no time for haters. I've been a customer of Mary's for more than a hundred moons. I will go noplace else. She could charge me three times as much and I'd go noplace else (though it would be three times practically free so it would still be practically free). I can't say for the ladies, but I know for sure that Mary and Jenny rock with men's hair. They care, they're attentive (and sure, this means if you have a late in the day appointment that they'll sometimes be running late - better to go earlier or when you aren't in a hurry), this is true SF small business in action. Let me preface this by saying for the past 2 years I was going to a $5 haircut spot in Chinatown/Nob Hill. Every once and a while I would change it up by going to a nicer hair salon but I never noticed the difference...until now. Harry's is a great little salon where the prices are right ($15-20). I have gone twice but I find the stylist in the first chair to be a wiz with my hair. Although it doesn't take much for men's hair, this place does a great job to make my haircut appear much more expensive then what I paid. Ugh, this place has definitely suffered from the Yelp effect, where just because the experience LOOKS like it should have been a disaster but wasn't, it warrants 5-stars. I'm here to correct course. This negative review is hard to write because Mary, the woman who gave me the worst haircut of my life, was just as sweet as can be. I really, really wanted it to be successful so I could have a little unexpected place to brag about (See: Camille in LA). So, I walked in on a Saturday. Place was nearly empty. First sign I shoulda walked out, given all the Yelp reviews claim lines out the door on Saturday. Next, I asked to use the restroom, as I had been walking around the city all day. I was shown the closet in the back of the shop, in which there was a water heater and a toilet. No sink. No soap. No sanitizer. Nothing. It was alarming to the germaphobe in me, but even more alarming when I started imagining a stranger's unwashed hands all up in my hair. Still, I stayed. I took my seat. Again, Mary, SO LOVELY. Really adorable and nice and polite. But I would have preferred she not use a brush at all on my short-ish guy hair, much less use the brush I had seen her use on the customer immediately before me. But, brush she did. I should take this opportunity to mention that my hair is EASY. It could only be classified as "normal guy hair." I keep it shortish on the sides, but never clippered, and a bit longer on top. I wear it a bit messy. It gets compliments, but there's really nothing to it. Then the scissors, just hanging out on the station, several inches away from the nearly-empty jar of barbersol. Bit of previous customers' hair still up in the hinge. Now, clipping away at my head. It was par for course... the place was in drastic need of a good cleaning and, uh, purging of junk. Why should I expect the scissors to be hygienic? The cut itself was a tragedy. My only instructions were "keep this same cut and style, but take it back about an inch. Oh, and please don't use clippers." To which she must have understood, "Shape my hair into a ball... but if you can't get it to be a ball, make sure it's shorter on the top than it is the sides and back." The language barrier was such a problem that I didn't attempt to ask for a correction when I saw she had taken the wrong path. She just kept shearing away at the top of my head, making it shorter and shorter, while the sides remained misshapen and longish. I thanked her politely, paid and left. I've now spend the better half of 2 hours in a mirror with my own scissors, trying to salvage the disaster on my head. read more

Strolling down Polk street looking for a haircut, I stumbled into this place with admittedly low expectations. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I walked out of Harry's with a new 'do that I really liked! Mary cut my hair, and she was excellent. Despite the long line of people waiting around for a cut, she was super attentive and did not rush the process at all. Before the session, she asked several questions to make sure she knew how I wanted my hair cut, and even offered helpful suggestions/styling tips that I'm sure will come in handy in the future. She was incredibly friendly and make an extra effort to ask questions every so often to make sure I was pleased with the progress. In the end, I was very happy with the cut and will definitely be back. I have typical Asian guy hair that's not very difficult to cut, so I may be pretty easy to please. I'm not sure how Mary would fare with more difficult styles, but it may be worth giving her a try. The price is a steal too - a mere $15 before tip. I've paid much more in the Fi-Di/downtown for haircuts that were much sloppier and done by stylists who are more concerned with getting you in-and-out as quickly as possible than with giving you the haircut you want. No need to pay for a crappy haircut when you can get a good one for real cheap. Overall, I think I found my new go-to spot! read more

What can I say about my Jen-ay? One day I was just hangin out wit my pals and they said to me, "Forrest.. err... Michael, you need to get you a haircut". I said "alright", and so I did. I called up Jen-ay and said "Hi Jen-ay, this is Michael, what time can I come get my hair cut?" Jen-ay tells me to show up at 1:40. So I did. And she cut my hair. Wouldn't you know it, when she was done I pay her $17-18, look in the mirror and it was like I was a whole new man. How long Jen-ay and I been together now? Oh I reckon most of my 8 years livin in Greenbou... err... San Francisco Cali-forn-ia. However there was that one year, back in 2006, when I was livin in the outer sunset where I wasn't seeing Jen-ay no more. Kiko was cuttin my hair then. I told her I wanted her to follow my current haircut and just trim it up, and instead she cut it totally differently and it looks really bad now :( Then, she realized it was bad and told me off for not letting her do it "her way". I think it's a fine place to go if you don't really have an opinion of how your hair should look afterwards, but if you do, stay away. I'm done with cheap haircuts... It's like I jinxed myself. I wrote my review the day before I had an appointment with Jenny. A friend was turning 30 and I had plans to make a giant cake for her party on Saturday, and needed to do something about my mermaid hair before the big night. I set up an appointment at 4:15 on Saturday, figuring the cake would be assembled and frosted by then, and I could take a break, get my hair done, and then go back home, get ready, do finishing touches, and be at the party by 7. No problem, right? Except when I showed up for my appointment they were running 'at least 25 minutes' behind. If she'd called to tell me this, I would have just done things in a different order, no problem. But she didn't call. BIG pet peeve. Seriously, transitioning life in the city means finding a trustworthy person to handle your hair, so I've been resorting to haircuts during my trips back to LA. I started this morning off by scheduling two hair salon appointments, but lucky for me, my roommate has been going here for awhile and sang this place's praises. After reading several Yelp reviews, Harry's seemed like the obvious choice for someone who just wanted a straight forward hair cut. Boy am I glad I came here. Jenny and Mary welcomed me as I walked in from the stinging cold. My wait time was short. The actual hair cutting went smoothly; Jenny made sure she knew what I wanted before she started and her motions were precise and calculated. Overall, a great experience. I paid $20 for a $16 haircut as I was expecting it to cost way more than that. Note: Don't be confused when they start speaking a mix of English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese. I've been basically a life-long customer of Harry's Hair Salon. In fact, with the exception of the time I lived out of SF (College/Grad School...), I can't think of anywhere else I have ever had my hair cut- and certainly have no recollection of anywhere else in SF. Mary and Jenny are very nice people and have not only been 'servicing' my hair for many many years, but my father and brother as well. The price is reasonable and I challenge the assertion that spending 'more' gets you 'more' for a haircut. It may be a psychological bump for some people, but I don't buy it. Both Mary and Jenny are excellent at what they do, and perform their haircuts in an efficient and sanitary manner. I can't honestly speak to how they handle 'complicated' feminine hair needs, but I can say that I have seen women in their shop many times, although there is probably a 4 or 5 to 1 men to women ratio that I have witnessed over the years. I have also seen them do a great job handling squirmy kids for haircuts. They do take walk-ins but I would recommend an appointment. Cash only FYI. Anyways, if you are in the area of Russian Hill and need a haircut, don't gouge your pocket-book- head to Harry's Hair Studio and get a great haircut at a great price. read more

As my hair was reaching near mullet levels, I decided it was time to drag myself out onto Polk Street for yet another attempt at finding a basic men's haircut for less than that week's paycheck. It could have been that I just avoided yet another expensive salon, or it might have been the absence of a line (always a big draw), but either way I was able walk in to Harry's without feelings of or a scheduled reservation. Jenny squeezed me in before her next appointment and told me that I was going to have to deal with her bad breath due to the sour cream and onion chips she had just eaten. While she tamed my mane, I found that she had developed quite a good reputation as three scheduled appointments rolled in after me in high spirits. When all was said and done, I only had $15 cash, but she waved me off saying that was fine! Great customer service, a great atmosphere, and a great price. What more can you ask for? I used to come here in the late 80's--early 90's, before it was sold apparently. Because when I used to get my hair cut here, there WAS a man named Harry. In fact, he owned the place. I don't remember his last name, but he was a Vietnamese man, and he gave a superb haircut. I used to go to expensive salons before I discovered this place, right by my neighborhood! Unfortunately the older lady (i'm bad with names, but since there are only 2 people who work there, this shouldn't be too hard to make out) messed up my hair on my most recent visit and therefore I will not go back. All I asked is for her to not change anything with my existing hair style (which the younger lady there did for me) and just trimmed my hair a bit. She became unhappy and said what I requested is not a trim since I wanted her to cut my hair about a quarter inch shorter. And she gave me a completely new (and uglier) hairstyle. Five stars because of the price. I'm done with $80.00 haircuts, I've even had a $400 haircut, now I'm only paying $18! I feaked out one night and started cutting my own hair. It was crazy! Maybe it was one of those PMS moments, I dunno. The next day on my lunch break I passed Harry's Hair Studio. In desperation I went in and Marie sat me down right away. If you are male with a very easy haircut and looking for a cheap place this is the salon for you. If you are looking for anything besides a very basic cut not the place for you. The salon was a little run down but pleasant. Good magazines, nice staff. But besides that I would call it more of a barbershop. I have only seen men getting their haircut while i was there. Yes, I only paid 18 dollars for a haircut but I was still a little unhappy about the results. Although my haircut experience was pleasant and the stylist was very attentive, I got home to realize it was incredibly choppy and uneven. I think she must have missed my natural part or something like that because once I washed my hair all of the pieces near my part (which were cut much too short) seemed to fall on the wrong side of my head and couldn't be blended. read more

Just went here for the first time today. Jenny was super patient with me as I pointed out each last strand of hair and how it should be cut. And she was smiling and friendly the whole time.
