I stayed at a hotel near by. I've visited three times so far and I've prob tried most items on the pie menu and beyond. Tiger pie (smashed peas and gravy on top) was ok. I preferred my pie with smashed potatoes and gravy. We liked Original beef pie the most as it has more beef flavor and it's with chunky beef not grounded beef. I also liked Steak and mushroom. The crusty was a bit doughy (not crunchy enough) for my taste though. The staff recognized us by now and he was very friendly. It's a small food shack but there were some seats available. It was our first time trying meat pies. I decided to try the beef pie and my husband and son tried the beef, cheese, and bacon. You can make any pie a tiger pie which is a pie topped with mashed potatoes, mushy peas, and gravy. The flavor was good and the service was quick. Since this is a food truck, there's no real seating just some benches nearby. Everything was great until we sat down to eat. After taking our first bite, we noticed a bunch of rats running around. I have noticed quite a bit of rats during our short stay in Australia. I got food from here at least four times in a two week period during my visit to Sydney. The beef meat pies were phenomenal, the curry chicken was actually my favorite. The sausage rolls were very nice. We ended up doing large orders for our whole team and every time The crew finished off every last item. Since 1938 Harry's Cafe de Wheels in Woolloomooloo has been serving their famous items. They have become so iconic not only do they attract the famous from around the world but in 2004 have been recognized with a heritage listing from the National Trust. Basically means if you are visiting Sydney and want to eat a local favorite food at a famous caravan food truck turned permanent kiosk. Find your way to Woolloomooloo. This is where the original Harry's is located. I believe there are two others but I prefer to come to the original place to see where it all began. So Aussie pie's isn't an item that is easy to find in SoCal so my pallate isn't use to this but I have an open mind. I rock up and I'm side tracked by the beauty of the wharf actually. There are birds around so that is my tip. Be aware of the birds. They have all sorts of pie's. I came for the Tiger pie and went with veggie. They have bacon, curry, beef, chicken. They also have hot dogs but they're famous for their Tiger Pie so I got that. I wasn't sure what the portion was going to be. It isn't that big but it's hella filling. I can see why they became popular with the locals and celebrities. The crust is flakey and buttery and filled with some cheese and veggies. Then comes a layer of well made mashed potatoes the kind that just warms your tummy. This is the Aussie part I'm not use to but was open to try. A layer of mashed peas that has a crater to cradle a ladle of savory and bold gravy. Damn that gravy! I know the mashed peas is a thing but dang they mastered that gravy recipe. I walked over from the Cathedral via the botanic gardens and thought I got lost a couple times. However, there are maps along the way within the gardens and so I was able to confirm that I was going the right way. It took me about half an hour to get there. After my pleasant meal overlooking the water, the employee directed me to a nearby bus stop which took me to Town Hall. It took another 30 minutes on the bus route to get to closer city attractions, but I got the chance to see more Sydney neighborhoods so I was not bothered. read more

While visiting the Sydney area, we were told the pies from Harry's was a must. If you Google Harry's, this location shows up as permanently closed. I can assure you it's not, but keep in mind that this is a little pop up, not a restaurant. Note the name, Harry's de Wheels! The wheel reference is because this pop up is literally on wheels and was once mobile. Not sure that's the case anymore, but just note you will be taking the food to go or eating on benches enjoying the nice view. As for the pies, delicious. Thank you, Yelp! While taking advantage of the free wi-fi in the Art Museum, I looked up places nearby for lunch. The #1 place on Yelp was Harry's Cafe de Wheels. Having not yet had meat pasties on our visit, we decided to give it a shot. We actually looked at the stand and decided it wasn't the right place for us, as it was a bit drizzly and there were no seats. We looked around a bit and there were no places open yet for lunch (it was 11:30 - I guess that's too early for lunch in Sydney??). I was really starting to crave a meat pie and the reviews had me sold, so we decided to go back. It turns out, there are about 6 stools on the OTHER side of the stand, and we were able to snag 2. My husband almost got 2 pies, as he didn't think 1 would be enough, but I convinced him to start with 1. And it was enough! They are deceptively filling. I went with Harry's 'Tiger' (Our signature dish named after our founder Harry 'Tiger' Edwards: Chunky lean beef pie served with mushy peas, mash & gravy. Our house special) and it was FABULOUS. I am still drooling! My husband got just a Pie & Mash (Chunky lean beef pie with buttered mash potato) and loved his as well. For 2 pies and 2 drinks, it came out to $17.20, which might seem pricey, but is SO worth it. These things are filling and hearty and WONDERFUL. They also just earned another star for having their nutritional information available on the website!! I am so glad I did not know that when we actually ate there, as it might have deterred me. But it's so nice to see! And I love that they use lean beef. Other than (an almost) lack of seating, the only other downside is that they are a cash-only establishment. We had made it our entire visit without getting cash, as we were only in Sydney a short time. After arriving in the early morning on an overnight trans-Pacific flight, we were fighting hard to stay awake and get adjusted to the local time. We headed off for a walk from our hotel in The Rocks, and decided to make this our lunchtime destination. After meandering around the Circular Quay and through the Royal Botanical Gardens, we arrived here just before noon. There was a pretty long line already, which gave us a chance to look over the menu, but we already knew we were all going to get a meat pie. We got four different pies - beef, beef and mushroom, beef, cheese, and bacon, and chicken and mushroom. We got one of them topped with the mushy peas, which we were a little skeptical about but in fact they were a nice addition. I don't recall the exact price, but I think each plain meat pie was about $5.60 Australian dollars plus $1 for the mushy peas, which is actually a pretty good price IMO. The favorite of the bunch was the beef and mushroom pie. All of them had a nice flaky crust that wasn't too greasy, and the fillings were warm with a decent amount of meat inside. This place of legend is quite the institution for tourists, locals, late-night-after-bars sort. They have opened several branches throughout the city, but this is a mecca for tourists. It's a little joint out by the docks in Wolloomooloo, with counter seating provided. GET THE TIGER. I hear the hot dogs are really good, too, but GET THE TIGER.
