Step aside assorted mystical deities, there's a funky black kitteh in town. Steve, or to give him his full title Unstoppable Steve 'Awesome' Summers-Jackson, came from this excellent pet shop on York Road. I've been going here for years for the wide range of food and treats, fishies and fishy related frippery and to buy small furry things whose entire purpose in life is to make me feel cuddly on the inside. As soon as we saw Steve we knew he was the one, he'd already made a huge impression on the staff in his time there by virtue of his mega meowy awesomeness and they still ask how he's doing every time we pop in. Great shop, great staff, happy and well cared for animals and an excellent example of how to do things right in a tricky and often poorly delivered industry. If Steve could say anything other than MROOOOOOOWWW, MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and PRRRRRUPPP I know he would give a double thumbless up.

I love pet stores that actually have animals inside for you to look at and paws for thought really do have a wicked reptile selection. I'm not a fan of them as they creep me out a lot but I kind of like looking. They provide care sheets for loads of different animals in store which is a really good service and all of the staff really know their stuff about how to look after the animals properly. As Susan's review said, they advise the RSPCA on exotic animals so they really do know their stuff.

They also sell live stock, including rabbits, guinea pigs, various rodent eg hamsters, gerbils and sometimes rats/degu's. I don't like to see animals sold in this kind of evironment, but they seem to be well cared for. They have also added an small animal adoption centre which is a nice touch! you can adopt a animal for a small volentary fee.

The fish were introduced to a stable aquarium. Unfortuantely a disease was also introduced leadign to me losing a number of my fish including all but 1 of the new ones. I returned to the store and found that many of the display tanks were showing signs of disease and some had dead fish floating in them. There is no excuse for selling dieseased fish at is easy ot treat them, especially in a pet store that has all of the treatments required at their disposal.

They also sell pets there, which are kept in appropriate cages,tanks, etc for you to view before you buy. The prices arent as cheap as supermarkets or bargain shops but the quality is the best and you get what you pay for. The staff are very friendly and polite and are always on hand to offer advice to you. The store is very clean and tidy and kept well stocked at all times.

They stock a large selection of cat, dog and small animal pet food as well as accessories such as collars, leads, cages, tanks and treats. If you are a herpologist (ie: you prefer your pets more slithery) then you are out of luck, but for most people they should be able to find what they are looking for at their local pets at home. The animals look quite well looked after, although some of the water bottles the rabbits were using were green with algea, but otherwise they were well kept.

It's a sad fact that the only reason I pop in here is to have a look at the little pets, but one day when I'm a real grown up I may be able to afford to look after my own little *cat/lizard/chipmunk/rabbit/snake! *delete as applicable Anyway, for that kind of fun there is Pet Wise in Otley. Firstly, the less interesting part, the shop is packed. This store has the largest selection of specialist and varied pet foods that I've ever seen in Leeds, they've got every kind of animal covered that I could see. The same applies to the toys and pet accessories - any number of cuddly baskets, play toys, bones, chewy scratchy posts/things and the rest. They even have garden type accessories - bird tables and so on! Now - to the animals! Firstly I came across the fish, there wasn't a huge selection, but there were plenty of beautiful and sweet looking tiddlers. They had little guppies (males £1.75p, females 99p) and little neon tetras for 85p. After that there were all the birds - canaries £17.50, cockatiels, budgerigars and parrots. There were two parrots who weren't for sale but amused me as they kept saying 'hello' and whistling! They also had some little gerbils and hamsters, who were cute but not as cute as the chipmunks! My favourites were the bearded dragons - there's something so austere and proud about their stance. Additionally they had tortoises and rabbits too. I must admit that I've never been a huge fan of caged animals - certainly not caged birds - but I guess the point is that when you purchase them you are meant to purchase a larger cage for them to live in. If I had the money I'd have bought every canary in the place as they were gorgeous, sweet and had the most beautiful song. I can't say that I thought the animals looked particularly unhappy though (perhaps they would have been happier in bigger cages) and they were obviously looked after. Essentially, Pet Wise is a lovely pet store, with clearly passionate staff, and everything you could possibly need for your loved animals. Perhaps even a new edition to the family too!

On a couple of ocassions we've had problems with diseases but they are always keen to replace fish that have died and try to help you keep your tank healthy. They also have a great selection of tanks and everything else you could need from pumps and filters to food both flake and live. The staff are also very knowledgable and can asnwer any questions you may have regarding fishkeeping. THe prices are always good with many offers such as 5 for fish for £x for example.
