I was very happy to get a tour of the library and to check it out by an employee. It is an excellent addition had a much needed upgrade from the old library here in Shepherdsville. It's been a year of loving this library, so it's time for an update!…read more My family and I love this little library and visit as a family at least once a month, while I stop by more than that to pick up books I've reserved. The staff is familiar and friendly. The children's area is small, but I love how it's set off from the rest of the library, meaning kids and can be kids a bit and make some noise. The small castle area is fun for my kiddos to jump and read in. They also love the coloring table and walking the aisles to find new books to love. This library hosts storytimes on Wednesdays for different age groups. We've come a couple of times to partake. It also hosts book discussions and other activities for adults. One other reason I've fallen in love with LFPL: the ease of requesting and borrowing audiobooks via the Libby app. If you have an LFPL library card, you can put a hold on up to eight books at a time. LFPL and the Crescent Hill branches make me proud to live in this city and neighborhood!

The old stone building 2 stories of tall ceilings and large book stacks. Large steps lead into the main entrance where you'll find the welcome/check-out desk and entrance to the children's library wing. Don't worry, the back entrance offers an ADA accessible ramp and elevator to take you to the basement level. The main floor hosts the DVDs, cds and shelves of pre-reserved items. The basement has the reference desk, computers, classrooms, bathrooms and more book stacks. I often use the website to search and reserve books. If it's checked out already, you'll be notified of your place on the waitlist and get a text when it's available for pickup. When you arrive, you can quickly do to the shelf and find your item in alphabetical order. A ticket with the first 3 letters of your last name will be in large print and sticking out from the book. Simply take the item to the desk. They'll scan the ticket and you'll be good to go. They'll even text you when your item is almost due. Obviously, it's good to return items on time or renew, but if you're late.. no biggie. They no longer have late fees! I usually just pick up my items and go, but every once in a while I need a quiet environment when I can force myself to focus. There are several little rooms scattered about with tables & lamps for more quiet studying. You're welcome to bring your laptop/ipad and connect to the free wifi. I usually bring my Beats or AirPods for noise cancellation, too... but it's a library, so it's generally pretty quiet. The hours are posted on the website, and the front door, but at about 15 minutes to close you'll hear an announcement to start packing up and checking out. The staff are all very kind, friendly, and helpful. They aren't timid in helping you to search for items/resources. They're also quick to tell you about online resources you can access with your library card -- including free practice tests for various fields of study.. and the "Libby" app, which gives you free access to audiobooks from your phone! Final perk, there's a small, but private parking lot which usually has a few open spots. If not, parking is free on Frankfort Ave and the surrounding streets. For those that could use a little support, or those that are in a position to share, there's a free food pantry facing Frankfort Ave, just off the parking lot. There are lots and lots of great libraries in the Ville, but I feel pretty lucky that Crescent Hill is my "home" library.

Forewarning: I am biased towards libraries!…read more I've checked out many books and DVDs from the Shively library. I prefer to place a hold on my items through the library's online portal at LFPL.org. Thus, when something is ready for me to pick up, it's waiting for me in the small "holds" section on a wall to the immediate left of the library entrance. This means I don't have to drive all over the city for a particular book or DVD! The online portal also allows me to renew items online up to 3 times if no one else has placed a hold on the item. That said, I have on occasion been reminded (upon returning an item) of other items which were also due that day that haven't been renewed just yet. On such occasions, the library clerk who reminded me has offered to renew the items on their end. It's the little things that get me :) On the rare occasion that my library account has an overdue fine, I've either paid at the desk or paid online with a credit card. This location has computers that are regularly used by patrons. Admittedly, I've never needed to use a computer. Patrons are older and younger, and for the frequent patrons, the librarians (especially one in particular) seem to have built some rapport with them so that's nice to see. The Shively library also holds events now and then. Although I haven't gone to any of the events, I am not opposed to them. Oh! To use the restroom, you do need to get a key from the front desk. I visited this library plenty of times before the key discovery- though I never really needed it until then. All in all, this is a clean, quaint library with friendly staff.

I grew up going to this library!…read more It hasn't had a lot of the big updates that some of the other libraries have but it has all that you need! Books, computers, and a lot of great programs! If they don't have a book that you want, they or you can request it. The bathroom stays locked and you have to request a key to use it. If you haven't visited a public library lately, you are missing out!

City Hall ... a well known spot in Louisville's downtown, but not a spot most of us need or want to…read morevisit. I spent time there with my son and classmates for their mock trial competition. We found ourselves in small courtrooms used throughout the week by our local judges and attorneys. You will enter through the front doors and pass through security. Pockets must be emptied and bags placed on the scanner. You can bring in drinks and food but no glass containers. Vending machines can also be found inside. Bathrooms were in terrible shape, sometimes out of toilet paper. Overall this isn't an exciting building structurally. I was hoping it would feel more historical and interesting. Below is the information from the Louisville Metro Government website, which gives insight of its history and current usage. ..................... Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, this Louisville landmark at 601 W. Jefferson St. is an impressive piece of civil Architecture and a metaphor for Louisville's Post War optimism and can-do attitude. Its exuberance is a stylistic counterpoint to the far more austere, 1836 Greek Revival style county courthouse across 6th St. Before city hall was built, there was no city Government building. City officials had shared space in the County Courthouses. Plans for the city hall were initiated when a design competition was help with the winner receiving five hundred dollars. In April 1867 the winning design, created by Louisville architects John Andrewartha and CS Mergell, was chosen. By the summer of 1870 the final plans of construction had been drawn by Andrewartha, in association with local architects C.L. Stancliff and Co. The existing government buildings on the site were demolished, and ground was broken for the building's foundation. The city engineer, I.M. St. John had been chosen by Louisville General Counsel to oversee the project, and Andrewartha was named the managing architect. Built with stone from the White River quarries near Salem, Indiana, city hall's construction took place between 1870 and 1873 at a cost of $464,778. The city hall, with its three stories and raised basement, was a blend of Italianate motifs and the French Second Empire style that was prominent in civic buildings after the Civil War. The edifice is also characterized by prolific use of symbolic ornamentation. Louisville's trust in progress and railroads is reflected in the buildings upper carvings. For instance, the pediment over the main entrance displays a bas relief of the city seal represented by a train "plowing through the wilderness" past such Southern flora as a palm tree and bearing the slogan "Progress 1871" This not only indicated the direction of Louisville's principal trade but was also an apt symbol of the tremendous influence the railroads, especially the Louisville and Nashville line, had on the city's commercial development. Likewise, the stone livestock carvings along the sides of the building reflect the importance of Louisville's Stockyards in her economic history. Another prominent feature of the city hall is its 196-foot-high, four faced clock tower with a mansard roof, built by Henry Whitestone in 1876 after an 1875 fire had damaged the original. A major exterior restoration of City Hall was undertaken in 2017. The limestone walls were cleaned, masonry joints were tuck pointed, and windows were renovated. During the restoration, several architectural elements were replaced such as the limestone columns and cast-iron corbels. Many of the same methods used to construct the elements were used to recreate the replacement pieces. Thought the exterior has remained largely unchanged, several renovations and remodeling projects have left little of the original interior intact. Today, the building houses the offices and chambers of the Louisville Metro Council.

The Division Street School is a hidden landmark in New Albany! There is not much promotion for it,…read morebut there should be! It documents African-American educational history after the Civil War in southern Indiana and is one of Indiana's oldest segregated schools. In 1885 it became one of the first of hundreds of African-American schools, this school taught up to 60 children ages 1-6th grades until it closed in 1946. In 1999, Friends of Division Street School restored the building and in 2002 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Now the school serves as a museum, and every 4th grader in it county attends class there for a day to gain real-life historical experience. The museum was closed when we visited, however we got to look through the window and read the historical plaques outside. I'm not sure that it is open to the public without an appointment, but would be even a drive-by!

Quick and friendly!…read more No one *wants* to take time out of their busy day to do the dumb, boring, annoying, Have-To-Dos when all we reeeally want to do is get done with work and get to the relaxing, happy hour, Want-To-Dos. But every X number of years, a person needs to renew their drivers license. UGH, amirite?! So, you want to get it done as quickly and painlessly as possible. As it turns out, this location (downtown, near the courthouse area) is close enough to my office that I can walk there if need be. Which is good because I don't also end up having to pay to park when I already pay to park monthly somewhere downtown. I could also go during a normal break at work, at any time of day, rather than having to fight with traffic at rush hour or after school times to get to a further out location. I was also able to get here right when they opened for the day. So I was the first person in the door. The building is older and the A/C doesn't work great, but the woman working was still pretty pleasant and friendly. I was in an out in no time! In fact...I left my desk at 8:15am, and I was back at the office and in my chair with my renewed license in my hand by 8:50am. Not too shabby!
