I don't live in the area but nevertheless I go out of my way to shop and tell everyone I.know to.go. 2 weeks ago I bought a honeydew, half an orange flesh melon and a watermelon.. I specifically said I wanted it ripe for that evening. The orange flesh and watermelon were good. The honeydew went straight in the garbage. It was not close to ripe. But 2 days later the orange flesh and watermelon.also went in the trash because they had turned rancid. Today U went back. I had every intention of making a purchase, but wanted to inform the store of the subpar produce ( that cost an arm and a leg btw) from my last visit.The staff are friendly and very accommodating. The person whom I can only assume is the owner. Is quite nasty. He claimed this has never happened to him in 43 years and that I didn't store the fruit properly and I should've called. He was quite rude and has a lot to learn about customer service. The staff however were very apologetic and could not have been nicer. He is lucky to have them, and I hope he treats them.better than he treated me this morning.

The many times we've stayed up in Woodstock, always make it a point to have a bite at the Bread Alone café- just because we know their breads/baked items are good. So when we noticed Bread Alone's table at this market, I was all over it. If Bread Alone isn't participating that particular Saturday, there are other Bread goods that you can get your hands on. With the exception of their Produce, there's also a Pickle & Olive table and Pastries too. This market is a decent fixture in these parts with basic essentials...... but it's really small. Seems like you can get away with a bigger selection over at the White Plains Farmer's Market. My only focus? The Bread Alone table (or any other baked goods).

I do however try to support local businesses so occasionally I'll pick up a few things. The WP farmer's market operates downtown on Court St between Main and Martine every Wednesday from 8-4 and (new this year) every Saturday from 8-2. I usually walk through the market on Wednesdays before going into work to browse, and today I had the opportunity to visit them for a little longer. Like any farmer's market, they have a wide selection of fruits and vegetables. I'm bad though, and usually head to the baked goods vendors. Overall, they have a good selection of businesses. Some of them come from upstate while others are local to the city. Two standouts in the market are Gaucho Burger Company and Walter's Hot Dogs who will both soon be opening brick and mortar stores on Mamaroneck Ave. I still think the outdoor farmer's market in Pleasantville is the best one I've been to in Westchester, but the WP one holds its own. They have a good selection of vendors offering a wide variety of products.

I went specifically to procure pork from Thornwood Farms, which recently bailed out on the Ossining market (boo!!). I got my pork, and then some! A lavender farm stand makes Scarsdale its home, with beautiful gifts (sachets, etc.) and lavender scented baked goods. There are several produce stands, though only one vendor had (sort of pathetic looking) fruit. There is a fantastic cheese vendor where samples abound, and that day they were selling organic lamb spring rolls, which were delicious. There are two wineries, an Asian sauce vendor, a pickle vendor, and more. Surprisingly pleasant for tony Scarsdale! I'll be an occasional visitor.

I was after the produce. The overall selection was not very large, and I was disappointed. I was hoping for a wider selection of vegetables, and I didn't see any cheeses, jellies or honey on display for the customers, as the Cold Spring Farmers' Market offers. The larger tomatoes were nearly gone - only two were left when arrived, and one of the workers explained that they had a run on tomatoes that morning. I did choose some nice potatoes, shallots, grape tomatoes, nectarines and an onion, so I did not leave empty-handed, and my purchases totaled only $8, which is definitely less than I would have spent for the same amount of groceries at the supermarket. I had wanted to buy some mushrooms for sauteing as well, but declined when I saw that the cheapest ones on sale were $10/pound. What the hell? I'm giving the farmers' market two stars because the employee who rang up my purchases was really nice, and the grape tomatoes he suggested were delicious. Besides, they might have been having an off day. I plan on taking some trips back here to see how they fair as the summer season ends and fall kicks into gear. They're open through November, and hopefully they'll have some great pumpkins and squash.

Also don't forget the great bakery Meredith's! Of course there is always that other bakery 'BreadAlone' - but I would personally leave them alone because of their political views - they support the destruction of History! There is also a pickle vendor, and an every-other -week appearance by a Vineyard, Distillery and even a honey vendor! This Market could even a step further about 2 years ago banning plastic shopping bags from being given out!
