Dave and Shannon are awesome people, Hurricane Helene took out their hostel but it's almost rebuilt. Cold beer, even some NA beers. Live music. It's my favorite place to go, spend birthdays and holidays there. Go become a part of their family like I did.

It's a special place place rooted deep within the long distance hiking community. The hostels amenities are very simple. Bunks, wood stove, showers, laundry, free shuttle, kitchen. It's perfect for hikers. And anyone who meets Bob will tell you he is the salt of the earth.

At his hostel you can bunk, or if you're a couple and there aren't many hikers staying the night you arrive, he will let you stay in one of his private cabins (one is a tree house). You are also able to shower and do laundry during your stay, and they will also shuttle the group into town. We had a medical problem, so Bob made a special trip into town just for us. It is not the cleanest, newest hostel we've been to, however none thus far have been. It was the atmosphere that made it incredible. I just hope hikers don't take advantage of this gem and they give back to his cause. We had such an amazing experience at this hostel!

They provide all of the amenities of home for their guests. We enjoyed a fire in the fire pit next to our cabin and rocking on the front porch in the evenings. The sound of the water moving down the river and the seclusion of the location is peaceful and good for the soul. Due to the convenient location we were able to enjoy sight seeing in North Carolina and Tennessee and take in the breathtaking views from the mountains when hiking. For anyone who loves the outdoors as we do this is the perfect location to spend a vacation. The small town of Erwin is a favorite of ours for its charm and unique shops. We look forward to spending more time at the farm!

When I arrived a few days later they took me in as if I were family. I had injuries from the trail and without hesitation got me the medical treatment I needed. They put me up in the cabin where again they made me feel at home...so much so I did not want to leave spending 5 days with them. I met many other wonderful guests who shared the cabin and stayed in their guest rooms in the house overlooking the scenic view of the river. Doe River Hiker Rest A wonderful place to stay in Roan…read moreMountain, TN. My wife & I were section hiking the Appalachian Trail from NOC to Damascus, VA & took a zero day to rest & resupply. The owners, Dave & Karen, were very accommodating & helpful. No nickel & diming you to death. They are VERY Hiker friendly. The nightly room charge includes showers, towels, laundry, & shuttles to town and to & from the trailhead. We were able to go to town any time we wanted/needed, and they offered use of refrigerator space & the kitchen if we wanted. My wife & Karen cooked us a delicious meal made largely from vegetables grown in their aquaponics greenhouse. The hostel is in a house & a trailer that used to house migrant workers on what used to be a commercial Christmas tree farm. Pines still surround the yard & goat pasture. They have milk goats, two friendly dogs, a neighbor's dog that comes down to play with their dogs, a Great Pyrenees that guards the goats, horses, and an aquaponics greenhouse. The rooms were clean & comfortable. The shared bath upstairs was clean & there was plenty of hot water. We were able to do laundry downstairs. If you're interested, they offer slack packing for a fee.

I am a pretty big guy but fit comfortably on the extended twin mattress. The mattress left something to be desired , but ultimately I slept better than I normally do at hotels because after 11:00, lights go out and it is quiet hours, which all of the other residents abide by. You can't beat the price and location, in the heart of the tourist district, just blocks from the drum circle park and Harrahs arena.
