Harland is one of the best spots in the area, no question. The food is fantastic, a real kitchen with real effort behind it, not just an afterthought at a brewery. The service is incredible too: attentive, friendly, and they truly go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. The interior deserves its own shout-out. It's beautifully curated, warm, and thoughtfully designed, the kind of space you actually want to hang out in. Everything from the atmosphere to the plates to the staff feels intentional. If you're looking for a great meal in a great setting, Harland is a must. I keep coming back, and I'll keep recommending it. read more

My bf said he's tried Harland before but only the beer. We saw that this place was new, so we decided to eat here and pair it with a beer or a seltzer. Space was open and basically you order at the register or the bartender. I chose a light seltzer, which was the Yuzu Gin and Tonic. This paired well with Protein Bowl. I liked all the elements in the bowl except the chicken. It was super dry :(. I ate a few pieces and concentrated my efforts on the other ingredients. The bf enjoyed his IPA but was surprised to see it smaller than he was expecting. He was expecting a bigger pour and was disappointed because it was priced high for the amount of beer. Overall a good meal! Came in on a Saturday around 5pm for dinner with the family. Everything is order as you walk in and then brought to you at your table. I ordered the smash burger, which was pretty good actually. My wife enjoyed her Italian sandwich (consumed before picture time). My kids ate most of their meal of kids quesadilla and chicken strips. Plenty of parking and the beer food vibe is all there. My only -1 star was for overall service, as no one came and checked on us after we received our food. Would have easily ordered another beer (which they could have charged to my tab) and asked for some condiments for myself and the kids. Nice area just outside the restaurant where kids can play. This used to be a Mexican restaurant but looks totally different now. Enjoyed the vibe and would go back for more beer/food. read more

Came here with my wife for an early Friday dinner after a long work week. Everything was fantastic! The beer: Piha Break IPA was nice and hoppy with minimal malt, nice west coast IPA with NZ hops. Their Marzen is a perfect take on the German classic. Malty but not sweet. The food: broccoli and cauliflower was a great side with a delicious umami sauce (miso I guess); wings were nice and crispy and lemon peppery served with a side of a mild miso buffalo sauce; rockfish ceviche was bright and fresh, we really enjoyed the cucumber gazpacho. Great service. The place started to fill up around 5:30, there seemed to be more little kids than adults at one point. read more

Came here on a Tuesday for trivia night. The shopping plaza is large and there is plenty of parking. They recently changed how they operate - it's open seating and you order up at the hostess stand. We ordered the beer battered onion rings and wings for appetizer. The onions rings were perfectly crispy and the wings were tasty. We also ordered the Cobb salad and Harland smash burger. The Cobb salad had the perfect amount of dressing, not too little and also not drenched. It was refreshing and tasty. We ordered the bread pudding for dessert. It was good but also just pretty average. Trivia was pretty fun. It was all done via phone. You join in from a QR code and all answers are submitted using the app/website. They pace it very well, not going too fast as to give time for you to eat and drink. Service was very friendly and attentive. The vibe is very casual and laid back. Overall I had a pretty positive first experience at this Harland location. It's in my neighborhood and I definitely will be coming back for more trivia nights. read more

We brought the family here based on our prior experience, which was great. However, things seem to have changed at the restaurant. The service is different. You sit down on your own open seating you have to order at the hostess stand and there are no servers that actually come up to your table to see if you want anything else in terms of other drinks, etc. The new service style here is disappointing. It was not a nice experience based on the fact that we had to write down our order on the back of a children's menu with a crayon, take it up to the hostess stand to actually place our order. The food quality was good but the overall experience left a lot to be desired. read more

Really enjoyed our time here and happy they have a dog friendly patio! Located in a shopping mall, the parking was a bit tough on a Fri night. We got there at 5:45 and was quoted a 20-25 min wait for the patio but ended up waiting close to 45 min. The space isn't actually that big and I heard a couple other groups getting quoted wait times as well even though it was early. They have their beer menu but also have wine, cocktails and some other non-alcoholic drinks. I got a red Pinot noir that was pretty good. My partner got the tiramisu stout and didn't really taste the tiramisu part as it mostly tasted like a standard stout. For food I got the brussel sprouts with the pineapple kung pao sauce on the side. It was a pretty good portion and a decent amount of pork belly. Most of the flavor comes from the sauce which mostly just tasted sweet to me but was still a nice contrast to the saltiness of the dish. My partner got the fried chicken sandwich with the hot honey addition ($1.5) and fries. He loved his dish. read more

Came here on a Wednesday night and was told there would be a wait. Looking inside, there was quite a bit of empty tables (see photo I took) so hmm not sure why the wait. While waiting outside, spoke to another couple waiting and they were told there would be a 30 minute wait and it was over 30 mins and they still had not been seated and it was a bit cold outside. Maybe the kitchen was catching up? Maybe soft opening so they are still figuring it out. Food was just ok. Very small size of calamaris. I got the lobster shrimp roll. Pre warn: not much of lobster shrimp in it and lots of celery and cucumber. I got it with salad and my plate looked more like I ordered a salad with a side of lobster/shrimp roll (see photo). My son had the Chicken sandwich which was good and came with awesome fries! The fries were my favorite item of the night. For drinks, I got the Japanese Lager, which is Puffed Jasmine Rice and Toasted Rice Flakes. Sounded exotic and it was a Good beer! Our order of dessert never came and when we finally asked if it was coming, they apologized that it seemed order was not put it (or maybe they were out?) not sure but either way, we decided to forgo the bread pudding. They have a decent social media presence, so I was really looking forward to my visit there, but unfortunately, it was underwhelming. They're located in the corner of a shopping center, and parking was fine. The place was open and airy, with plenty of natural light and they offer outdoor seating. They have a bar to one side of the restaurant, with a few TVs. They had 15 or so beers on tap, and none blew me away. (Their Crone Zone is really the only beer of theirs that I've enjoyed.) You have to go to the counter to order food and drinks, and then they'll bring it to your table -- that's not the experience I'm expecting when they suggest a 20% tip. The staff is friendly enough. Overall, I was hoping for an experience more like a Gordon Biersch. read more

After much anticipation, Harland opened their new restaurant in 4s and I was able to stop in for a visit. The vibe of Harland is fun with an elevated menu much like many of the micro brews that have been growing here in San Diego. I'll be optimistic about its success, but my recent experience was a little mixed. The staff were very friendly and all seemed to work well as a team. Was met with a friendly greeting and was able to get a seat pretty quickly without a reservation. I was looking forward to sampling a few of their beer selections on the menu, but was told that several were not available. After ordering a beverage, I was looking forward to an appetizer before sampling one of their entrees. To start, I selected to the Garlic Noodles and for my entree, I ordered the Half-Roasted Chicken. Both the beverage and the appetizer arrived very timely. The Noodle dish was a good portion for an app, and had a slight kick to the sauce. Beyond that, it was pretty average. The Half-Roasted Chicken arrived with lots of accents with its sauce and toppings. It had a good portion of chicken which was cooked well and was moist as well. The chicken was served with a jus and topped with shaved fennel. Unfortunately, the jus was more of a thicker sauce and was a bit short of savory flavor. Good potential, but crispy skin and savory jus would have made a huge difference in my opinion. Not something I would order again. For a new restaurant in the area, I remain hopeful that Harland will work through its new restaurant kinks and become one of the local favorites. The location is solid and a good history of success in the area. I'll be sure to stop in again sometime in the near future. read more

The wait was very long on a Saturday evening and they dont take reservations. We decided what to get while waiting to be seated. Quick service after we ordered. Every dish was tasteful. We were starving by the time we got our food that I could take pics of half empty serving.portions were good size. Best was Harland burger. So excited for this opening in our community. We arrived tonight for the soft opening and enjoyed trying many different beers and a full dinner. This place is casual but classy. Real heavyweight silverware, glassware and plates. Beers - We tried a flight and then some. The flight is a great way to sample the different varieties. We went end to end from the hoppy Nelson Nelson, Hazy IPA to the very flavorful stouts (tiramisu and coffee stout was amazing). Can't go wrong with anything on the beer list. Food Appetizer: Calamari - great flavor, not too breaded and the sauces served with it are really flavorful - the hung pao sauce was on point. Entrees: Salmon on rice, lots of flavor, seared perfectly with side of broccoli. Chicken Curry Pita - moist and tasty chicken, stuffed into a pita with tzatziki sauce, fresh veges- delicious Dessert: yes we forced ourselves as our appetizer and meal was super filling but hey we were up and down the menu so had to complete the night wit the lemon with blueberry dessert - Umm Yes 100% We will certainly be back as the beer and food were great, friendly servers (thanks Jay) and I loved meeting the owners tonight as they were visiting every table. This is the Harland restaurant which the other locations don't have. They only have collaborations with food trucks. This one is right by my house so it's super convenient for us and we wanted to check it out. We went on a Friday afternoon and we wanted to try the lunch specials that they advertised on Instagram. However, when we went in person, they didn't have the lunch specials on paper and I had to ask about it. It would be a lot better if they had a menu advertising their lunch specials so people can see it in person and order it. Honestly, I didn't think the food was gonna be that good but for a brewery place the food was pretty solid. I got the chicken chicken tenders and their fries were really interesting but pretty crispy. The chicken burger was pretty good but very similar to the chicken tenders. The barbecue sauce was the best out of all the sauces. The ranch is pretty good but barbecue sauce was really good. The beers, of course, are really good Harley brewing beers are always solid. The restaurant itself is spacious large open floor plan with a cute patio and they have water bowls for dogs so dog friendly. I would absolutely return and take people from out of town here since it's close by and it has good selection of food and drinks. read more

When we moved to the 4S area 1/ years ago, we were regulars at Karl Strauss. Then Covid hit, and Karl Strauss changed their restaurant service to a cafeteria style, where customers ordered at a counter. It was a terrible service model and we abandoned Karl Strauss for other beer-centric restaurants (like BJ's Stone, Bear Roots, Knotty Barrels and more.) When Harland opened in 4S, we went there and had a great experience: tasty beers, great food, excellent servers and top flight service. We returned regularly. Today we were there and management has changed their service to the cafeteria model that failed at Karl Strauss. This model also reduces tips to the staff as well as reducing service attention to the customers at tables. We'll continue visiting other venues until Harland comes to their senses and puts the customers first. read more

I wanted to love this place since they shut down the one in One Paseo, but it is just not as warm and inviting. Not super busy on and Sunday evening. We sat at the bar and had a nice chat with the bartenders. They do serve food so that is a step up, but the atmosphere was just kind of lacking and sterile. We ordered garlic noodles and the 5 cheese cornbread. They were both really good. We wanted to get the beer of the month to go but they were sold out. Overall I was a little sad. Let me just say this - Harland's Japanese Lager might be the best San Diego brewed beer right now. It's truly a homerun product from this company. Imagine a lager like a Sapporo with a hint of toasted rice. It's amazing! On to the review. This is the 'new' Harland Brewing tasting room but its more like a restaurant... I was a HUGE fan of Harland at One Paseo. It was a place to chill on a leather sofa or out on the patio in Del Mar/Carmel Valley to have a beer, shoot pool, people watch, watch the Padres, etc. Many were sad to see it close as it was much needed in the area. (so I might be comparing here). To be honest - I wasn't feeling it at this new location. Sure they have the same beers, added a kitchen with a full menu but the vibe is just sterile. Its just tables and chairs with a bar. It just has that stucco, drywall, steel feel to it - that you find everywhere else. As someone mentioned, Board and Brew next door has cheaper beers. Harland does have the $5 beer of the month and when Padres are playing they have the Cronezone lager for $5 (at least they did last year). Maybe its just new and it needs to show some patina but I'm probably not going to go out of my way to come here. read more

I don't like that they switched from having servers to ordering at the counter and they ask you to tip before you have been served. Tips should be for good service. I also don't like that they start turning the chairs upside down on the table almost an hour before they close. It's not very welcoming and it makes you feel rushed well before they are closed. I ordered the Harland Kale Caesar. Per the description it came with Romaine, Kale, sourdough croutons, Parmesan, and a lemon caper vinegrette. There were like two pieces of kale in a huge mess of non-crisp romaine. There is no way those croutons were sourdough, and whatever stale (not insulting, just because that is generally where croutons come from) bread they were made from was sweet and did not make the proper transformation into a crouton, they were soggy. The dressing was fine. I was largely disappointed and ended up picking the very few pieces of kale I could find and leaving the rest which was pretty much all of it. I understand if they ran out of ingredients, but then just say so. I would have ordered something else and wouldn't be lying in bed hungry right now. My beer was good. read more

The last three times I visited here, it seems that management has slimmed down the servers to one person. This doesn't work. I have to flag down the server for all of my needs, because the server is so over-taxed. Today I tried the new Italian sandwich which was a terrible disappointment. They put together all the right ingredients but then slather it with Greek Giro sauce! What were they thinking? I like the location and their hazy IPA but I am done. Very good smash burger and some unique and tasty beers. Harland replaced Ponces Mexican restaurant and they did a GREAT job making the place look really lively and nice. The beer prices are my only negative, $9 for a 16oz beer when there's a board and brew right next to it with often $5-$7 beers makes it difficult to spend that amount but for the ambiance it is worth it once in a while. Come for the beer, not for the food. I was quite excited to hear this new location opening up in 4S Ranch and decided to come visit on a weekday evening. Parking is very easy since it's located in a large lot with other businesses. This location has plenty of indoor and patio seating which is very nice especially for a warm spring day. Service here is great. They are attentive and come check on you frequently. The beer selection is OK. There's definitely a range in variety such as IPA loggers, stouts and sours. The Japanese logger was very popular with the group I came with. It's definitely an easy drink and not something that is commonly seen at other breweries. Now onto the food. As I mentioned in the beginning, I would recommend grabbing dinner or lunch elsewhere and coming here just for the beer. The food is underwhelming in both options and also overall taste. I ordered the chicken tenders, brussels sprouts, garlic noodles, pork ribs, and the flatbread pizza. The chicken tenders were very dry and hard to finish. Brussels sprouts were well cooked, but drenched in too much sauce. The garlic noodles, again were well cooked, but the sauce was very one-dimensional and did not pack a punch like typical garlic noodles. The flatbread was the best dish of the evening. All of this to say, I recommend coming to Harland Brewery to grab it a beer and have a good time with your friends. It is a great addition to this part of town. read more

I have never been to a Harland location, so this is my first impression. Located right next to Piacere Mio, this brewery has a great patio and super nice interior. It was mostly empty for a Tuesday lunch, so that was very nice. The shared plaza parking had more than enough space. I was part of a large group (10+) who made a reservation in advance, so I will try to be nice. The server was juggling a lot for us, but I found it odd how infrequently he checked on us. He forgot to take our drink order entirely. We passed around a few of the appetizers, the flatbread was my favorite. The menu was a bit overwhelming with no singular theme, more of a variety. I chose the salmon poke bowl for something light and it was amazing! Unlike a traditional poke bowl, but I liked their take on it. My friend said the honey bbq sauce was to die for! She ordered a Cesar salad with chicken on the side. When the chicken arrived bare, she ordered the honey bbq to smother it in, and she said that salad was the best she's had in a while! Overall I think it was a solid lunch spot and the variety of the menu could be hit or miss depending on the crowd. read more

Great location and good ambiance. Took a while to be seated (50 minutes) on a Friday. Food took a while to come out. The garlic noodles was pretty small - the noodles were good but they're a little al dente so just be aware. In contrast, the cornbread was a very large dish and was a good and very unique flavor. The braised ribs were delicious but expensive for the volume. We really loved the mashed potatoes. The gnocchi was not good, at all. Undercooked, a strange herb seasoning, and the sauce was a mess. My husband doesn't drink beer very often, but when he does, it's Harland beer. He's always wanted to go to the Scripps Ranch location, so we decided to check it out for lunch, when we looked up driving directions we found out there was a 4S Ranch location. So that's where we went instead. The service was amazing. The hostess was sweet, our server was so helpful and everyone else that brought our food was just great. We ordered the hummus for appetizers. My husband ordered the fish tacos. I ordered the lobster roll. Our kids got cheeseburgers. We also tried their desserts. Everything was delicious. The aesthetic was clean, modern and simple. We sat inside, but they also have an outdoor patio area. They had some pretty sweet merch on display as well. I bought a gift card to put in an auction basket I'm putting together. Overall, pretty satisfied with our visit. I reached out to the manager, I'm waiting for a response back. read more

Limited menu, decent price and tasty food. Cornbread was the best.. yummy and a must try! Friends had gnocchi, fish tacos, chicken and the lobster roll and they said it was great. I had the smash burger and it was good as pretty classic but nothing new I should say. There were eight of us in our party and the dishes were brought out in parts so it affected the overall experience as some had to start eating otherwise their food would have gotten cold while the others sat and watched them. Parking is easy it's in a strip mall in a nice area. We sat outside it was a nice day and they have shade for outdoor seating. Waitress was great, I ordered some biscuits and gravy. It came with home fries and 2 fried eggs. Everything tasted great and was seasoned perfectly. Their cooks obviously know how to cook. The biscuits reminded me of red lobster cheddar bay biscuits. I've never had biscuits like this with biscuits and gravy but it was different in a good way. The biscuits were not crumbly they had a firmness. I'll add a picture. Love the Bay Park and Scripps locations and was really looking forward to the new 4S Ranch spot. Unfortunately, I can't fully recommend this location over the others. The 4S Ranch location lacks the charm and atmosphere that make the other spots enjoyable. It almost feels like eating in a cafeteria -- cramped and with very little intimacy. That kind of setup can work in a brewery or bar atmosphere, but the problem is this place seems caught between trying to be a brewery and an intimate restaurant without really succeeding at either. The seating is so close together that you're too close to strangers to comfortably have a conversation with the people you came with, yet the layout is also designed in a way where you're clearly not meant to interact with the people around you either. It creates an awkward in-between atmosphere that doesn't really work. The beer is still very good and the food is solid, which is the saving grace here, but the experience gets dragged down by the pacing of service. Drinks came out extremely slow, and it completely disrupts the atmosphere and flow of the meal. Hoping this location finds its footing because the other locations set a much higher standard. read more

Love, love, LOVE this new location. From the moment we walked in, you could feel the sense of community, updated interior, great energy, and it was packed... yet somehow still so welcoming. Even with how busy it was, we never once felt rushed. Quite the opposite; it genuinely felt like they wanted us there for as long as we wanted to stay. Our server AMBER was amazing, but honestly every single person we interacted wit, from the food runners to the rest of the staff and the owners all made us feel so well taken care of. The drinks and food are so DELICIOUS. We already knew the beer was solid, but wow--the food. This chef is doing something special. Delicious, thoughtful, and absolutely worth coming hungry for. And the price point is very reasonable for the quality and experience. I truly can't say enough good things about this place. It's already a favorite and we'll be back again and again. read more

I've been twice now - last night for their soft opening and today for the grand opening. Yesterday evening it was packed and we waited about 30 mins for our table. Today I walked right in during lunch. Both times they've been well staffed. Servers are pitching in to help each other out and seems like things are running pretty smoothly. The food is delicious. Last night I had their Tuscan salad, the brussel sprouts, and my kiddo had the butter noodles. We shared the bread pudding for dessert. All were very good. Today I had the chicken sandwich, with the option to have the chicken tossed in gochujang hot honey. Very messy to eat, but absolutely delicious. Also highly recommend the 4Simcoe beer they have out right now to celebrate the new location. It's not on their beer list, but my server mentioned it last night and I had a pint of it today.
