We are so fortunate to have a Top 50 North Carolina golf course right here in our backyard. It is amazing to see God working through this course to bring the community together, from neighbors in and around Colours, to folks on the outskirts, to tournament players traveling all the way from Florida. The entire staff works with unmatched patience, humility, and kindness. On the course and in management, Johnny, Jim, Terry, Donnie, Bob, Bobby, and even newer team members like Micah are phenomenal. On the customer front end, Ken is doing an incredible job building and leading his team. A special shoutout to Kelly, Hana, Lee and both Kaitlyns. These women serve with so much grace, patience, personal tact, and professionalism, even during moments when folks are grumbling. We also have to recognize the quiet busy bees in the kitchen. The chefs are putting out the best food I've ever had in New Bern, and downtown honestly doesn't even compare. The culinary style and the juicy tenderness of the chicken and meats set the benchmark for the entire city. Other local restaurants should take note. Please continue to sustain and refine what you're doing back there, and please give that kitchen team a raise because they truly deserve it. As a family breadwinner who works my butt off every day, I only get to golf about once a year. Even though I haven't quite been able to negotiate a membership into the budget with my better half yet even with the military discount, I am so thankful to be treated like a member every time I visit as a guest. This is a country club's grill room which is actually open to the public. The quality of the food…read morehere is very good, and the varied menu will have something to suit almost anyone. The dining room has floor to ceiling windows that face north, so it's bright without uncomfortable glare. There is bar seating as well as several tables. I can highly recommend the salads, which are generously sized and always very fresh. Breakfast is good, with light fluffy pancakes and tasty breakfast meats. Sandwiches are good here also, as are the wings and burgers. The wait staff is very friendly and accommodating, and the owner of the country club makes occasional appearances to check on customers. We always feel right at home here, even though we're not club members. My family and I live only half a mile from here, so we visit at least once a week.

But if I can find places online that are sub $40 or even in this case, sub $30....I'm in. The setup here is simple. No issue with that here. The person at the counter chuckled and said aside from a twosome that was in the parking lot, there was no one out there and no other tee times for the entire day. The course is a mixed bag. #1 couldn't be played in its proper form as the sprinklers were in full force all over the tee boxes. I sort of made my own modified tee area and went from there. #15 had a "modified" green. The actual green is OOO and they have kind of a half-assed cut "green" with flag and cup in what would be the fairway. No bueno There is some water on a few of the back nine holes, not much in terms of sand, a ton of trees and houses that are close but not that bad on most of the holes. Between tee boxes, fairways and greens I would grade them C, B and C-. Some of the tees are decent, and others are mostly chewed up or just straight up sandy. The fairways are in good shape and no joke, there were more guys out mowing then there were people playing. The greens are.....not a lot of break in them but too many are more black then green and they are definitely on the faster side of fast. This place resembles, somewhat in a good way and somewhat not in a good way, the course over at Minnesott Beach. A lot of the same issues there are the same as the issues here and in each case, I would be hesitant to play either place at full price. For a cheap hacker this is good enough. If you take things seriously or are expecting true upscale country club conditions, you're going to leave shaking your head.

I recently stayed at the Abilena Mansion for a friend's wedding and appreciated how inclusive the…read moreproperty is. The mansion sleeps 14 people with 7 queen beds, but we were able to accommodate more by using the spacious couch in one of the bedrooms and sleeping 3 to a bed another night. It was so nice to have the entire wedding party stay in one place. We had the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception on property, and there was enough lawn parking for all guests. The ceremony space is outside overlooking a peaceful lake that beautifully compliments the sunset. We used the dock for wedding party photos and as a place to hang out and chat on our fist night (tip: bring bug spray). The reception area is also outside but completely covered and with optional side shading. Both areas are the perfect size for small-to-medium size weddings. A big con, should it affect you and your guests: the mansion and grounds are not wheelchair accessible. There are quite a number of steps to get to the ceremony area with no alternative route. Guests who cannot walk or climb steps may not be able to view the ceremony next to everyone else. I also did not notice a ramp leading inside the mansion. We joked that the kitchen has everything you don't need. They have like 3 cheese graters and 50 wine glasses, but no Pam, scissors, or a wine/beer bottle opener. The owners probably don't stock the place with these essential items because guests could easily steal them, so please, for your own good: BRING A WINE BOTTLE OPENER. The kitchen has two refrigerators--enough room to hold 5 bags of ice in each freezer. The mansion also has a washer and dryer and plenty of clean towels. And a piano! And a pool. And tons of room to work on wedding decor projects. Basically this place has almost everything you could want in a wedding location. The owners are available via phone at almost any time and are quick to reply. The husband and wife duo visited every day to clean up, check-in, and help with ceremony set-up. My biggest complaint with the Abilena Mansion is the wi-fi. It worked for about 30 minutes when I first connected and then died for the rest of my multi-day stay. No one's phone could successfully connect to the wi-fi even though it appeared available. This is a huge downside for a place that's supposed to service large groups of people who want to stream music, look up information, post on social media, and activate other celebration-related things.

To get 5 stars, we would need it to be a bit easier to navigate, there were a lot of large stairs that were hard for those wearing heels. I don't know how much control over the event the owners have but it was a bit confusing knowing where to go and when, maybe bigger signage would help. Overall it was a lovely outdoor venue.

I had the best time checking out the kites, not just ordinary single-string kites, but stunt and power kites, too. My first trip was to check things out -- my next trip will be to indulge. This park contains one of the best disc golf courses in the New Bern area. Barring a few instances over the past year, this course has been well maintained and a blast to play. The first half has more open long range holes, and the second half gets deep into the woods with some really tricky shots. Most holes have two difficulty levels, as evidenced by the different starting pads and baskets. Overall, this course is challenging, and it's a beautiful hike to boot. B. This park has a lot of different species of frogs, toads and lizards. It's a ton of fun to just walk around and try to spot as many different little creatures as you can find. Being right on the bank of the Neuse means there are always interesting things to poke and the views are nothing to shake a stick at either. C. Glenburnie has a pretty awesome playground that my young nieces just love to visit. The equipment is very well maintained and is kept well stocked with plenty of children for your youngins to play with. As an adult, I find myself wanting to climb the giant rock they have at the playground every time I visit. D. Snakes!? Why'd it have to be snakes? During the spring time, I've noticed a water moccasin or two sunning themselves on the disc golf course between holes 5 and 10. As I said before, the grounds are well-kept at Glenburnie Park, so keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings and its not an issue. Overall, I love this park. If you find yourself in the New Bern area, check it out!
