Last night, our large party of 12 dined here for a meal we all enjoyed. Right on the Chespeake Bay, Harbor Shack has a feel exactly like what the name says: a shack. But it's much larger than a shack, just with lots of odd and eclectic signs all over the walls which gives it a unique feel and life of its own. There's a nice array of menu items (seafood, burgers, Mexican) giving you a good choice for what you might want. They throw some chips and salsa on the table to start. Beyond that, half the table shared mozzarella sticks and the other half clam strips as appetizers. I heard no complaints about the sticks (didn't get to try them), but our clam strips were pretty tender and tasty. I'm not sure why they went with cocktail over tarter as a sauce to give with them, but it worked for the most part. For the main meal I had the fish and chips which were breaded cod fillets that were nice and flaky. The fries were okay and a good bit of coleslaw rounded out the meal. Other menu items from the table included taco salads, burgers, and sandwiches which went over well (the taco salad looked/tasted great as I snuck a bite or two). Overall I enjoyed my experience at Harbor Shack and would return (especially on a warmer day to be outside by the bay). read more

So great to sit outside despite it being a windy November day. Nice views, good location, food was good and so was beer selection.

Beware of the reviews who complain about having to leave because of their dog... I have been going to this bay side restaurant for years and it has always been a really fun summer dining spot. They have a large indoor/outdoor bar and a decent menu. The best part is the location, which is mainly because you are situated right on the Chesapeake Bay. To address the reviews about this place not being "dog-friendly", this is a locals restaurant and typically has to deal with out-of-towners who show up with their dogs. We keep our boat near by and have been going to the Shack for over 5 years. Its our absolute favorite and look forward to going there EVERY weekend. Its the "shack." Its not a 5 star restaurant. That said...that's exactly why we love it. Rock Hall has its own very laid back personality and that's the shack. Locals and boaters all there to just chill out and have a good meal. Sure sometimes the band is so so but sometimes (East Rock) their GREAT!! We have NEVER had a bad meal-ever. Always enjoy ourselves. As it says on the menu.."Don't be in a hurry because we're not." That's the point. Chill out, relax enjoy the view and have a great meal for a very reasonable price. Dare you to find better drink prices on the bay. The food is actually good. Prefer it over Waterman's any day of the week. Great burger, chicken quesadia, prime rib, chicken chesapeake, crab cakes etc etc. All good. My husband and I had a great meal at Harbor Shack! I had the shrimp and asparagus quesadillas and Maryland crab soup. My husband had the crabcake (all crab, mmmmm) dinner! Awesome place where the locals hang with the boaters. Funny menu mix of eastern shore and Mexican but it totally works with the vibe. Very, very friendly staff. Super casual. Very much a waterfront bar restaurant. We had the salad, tuna appetizer, crab cake sandwich and the fish and chips. All good. Would love to see them add simple street tacos and sweet plantains with queso fresco/crema to the menu mix. If I could be totally picky - higher quality tortillas (restaurant made/fresh). Beer selections were good. Great location. That's all the good. Bar tender was very inattentive. Owner extremely rude. Told us we had to leave because we had our dog Tasha with us. Now we were at an outdoor bar. Her reasoning was that they were "not a dog friendly place" because dog's were not friendly to them. Can you believe it? This is a place you go to if you want to get drunk by the water and have decent seafood while listening to nickelback (don't judge me). As a vegetarian, there was only a few options including Mexican food and appetizers. The onion rings and wine suited me very well. I left feeling happy. read more

Harbor Shack is a fun place by day but not very family friendly at night. Night time is geared towards those over 21. The decor is fun, very island and key west style. The staff is friendly but normally very busy and not personable. The owners are very nice The food is pretty consistent. I would rather see more seafood on the menu. The prices are rather high for the selection. The drinks are average for the area. They have drink specials that are outrageously priced. Specials do not mean cheap. Disappointed this time. Been here many times and the crap dip awesome. Not this time. This time it no real crab and certainly no lump as noted on the memo and definitely not worth $13. That price is for the crab. Margarita way too sweet with the syrup mix they use. Good part was the atmosphere, vibe, and the band and husband happy with his meal! What a disaster. My guy and I came here for a quick bite, at the recommendation of a local bookseller. It happened to be pirates and wenches weekend, so maybe that accounted for our experience. My guy ordered the cheese quesadilla, and I ordered the Maryland crab soup, at the server's suggestion. The quesadilla was unremarkable and soggy. My soup was full of salt, so much that I had to dilute it with water, and it still was salty. We also had bad run-ins with other customers (one tried to hit on me, others were obnoxiously loud). Repositioning my sailboat in early December...weather marginal. Cold. Was about an hour from getting dark so I put in at Rock Harbor. The harbor was quiet but some cars are parked near a place with a big sign "Harbor Shack." So I tied the boat up at the end of the pier. Once inside was greeted by a smiling staff that didn't seem to care that I wasn't local. I asked the staff who I need to talk to to stay the night at the pier. Was told the name of the fellow...but...BUT...there are slips available for customers for FREE:) Blue Moon on tap...PERFECT. Ordered a burger that was well-proportioned and juicy. French fry serving a little on the small side...but man were these folks the nicest! Spent the evening there talking to folks from town and left...the check was only $25:) Plus the free slip I felt like I was ripping them off:( Atmosphere is wonderful and the bar food is above average. The crab dip is a HUGE serving by the way! The weather turned worse the next day and I arranged for storage of my boat until spring. My wife came to pick me up with the kids (3 and 6 years old). Again, wonderful experience. The boys befriended a girl their age and were provided a basket of crayons and coloring pages by the staff...they decided to set up a coloring area in a corner of the restaurant and the staff was more than happy to let the kids play. I plan on going back here again and again. Even if the food was terrible I would go here simply because the staff is wonderful and the atmosphere perfect for a waterman's town. Came here awhile back and had such a horrible experience. We couldn't find a hostess, so we grabbed a random server to seat us. She assured us our server would be with us soon. 10 minutes and no acknowledgement later, a young server with a long black braid, turns to look at us and says "it's going to be awhile before I can get to you.", with the crappiest look on her face. That is NEVER how you speak to a guest. Disgusted, we got up from her table and sat at the bar. Which was also an awful experience. I don't recommend this place. For what it is, Harbor Shack has a good menu, atmosphere and setup. We spend a lot of time in Rock Hall and go here frequently. Good bands once in a while. Do not expect fast paced anything around here, RH is for relaxing and taking it easy. Crad Dip and soft shell crabs are good to get. Maybe if I was not a regular, I would give it 3 stars...The food, like most places can 'miss' once in a while, but the staff and people are always friendly and accomodating. read more

Went on a Thursday evening when it wasn't that busy, they were out of Blue Moon, out of fish tacos, and it took about 40 minutes for my food to come out, even though the food ended up being delicious (maybe because I was just hungry)... I had the crab cake stacker sandwich and it was really good. The crabcake was seasoned well and i enjoyed the avocado may mix. I did not like the swiss cheese on it. Dined here for a birthday dinner with family on St. Patrick's Day. The crab cakes were outstanding with very little filler, and the Crab Imperial dish was also fantastic. The coleslaw was excellent, as were the rolls. The side veggies were a tad overcooked but we there for the seafood and not the veggies. The Rum Bucket and the Rock-a-Rita didn't disappoint either. We went on Labor Day weekend and the place was hopping with music and lots of drinkers. A band was setting up to play. The cuisine is American/Mexican. The Crab Bisque was very good. The Sausage & Shrimp over rice appetizer is big enough for a main course if you are not too hungry. Food is good & the ambiance is great for those in a hanging out mood.
