My friend and I went into Drillen True Value Hardware at 460 Cottage Road in South Portland, Maine…read more I was in the bolts and screws aisle, not quite finding what I needed. My (very) adult female friend told me she would ask an employee to assist. She went to the counter and asked the young man (with a reddish beard) at the cash register if someone could help us with the screws. The employee called out to another man working there, saying, "This woman needs help with a screw!" Then, laughing, he added in an equally loud voice, "You know what those are, don't you?" The two men laughed, as did the woman who was working the other cash register. Other customers witnessed this exchange. It was an ugly and humiliating display. It was deeply offensive and I'm unsure why a customer (female or male) would be treated that way. There are two things, however, that I am quite sure of. First, she and I, of course, will never enter this hardware store again. Second, we will not be timid about letting our friends and acquaintances in South Portland and neighboring Cape Elizabeth know how Drillen Hardware demeans women.

Not a big box hardware store just a fantastic locale store that has been around for years…read more Knowledgable and personable staff that go out of their way to make sure you have what you need and not more. My wife and I have never had a bad experience here and she grew up in Cape so has been a customer longer then I have. The staff goes out of it's way helping and educating kids who shop there too.

Eldredge Lumber & Hardware - I love this store!

Eldridge, operating under the Ace umbrella, is the type of place I remember going into as a kid…read morewith my dad. It's not overwhelming, bleak, and corporate feeling like Home Depot or Lowe's. Now, my handyman abilities are pretty limited. I might be able to drill a few holes and hammer a few nails, but don't ask me to lift any lumber or install vents or pipes... Having said that, I feel that a lot of the items here are non-intimidating and accessible for casual work. But there are also many stocked aisles with all sorts of stuff I would never know what to do with. In sum, this place seems to have a bit of everything despite not being a hangar-sized warehouse of crap. Maybe I've just been ensconced in the Midwest faux-charm for so long, but the people here are so friendly! I'd never get this kind of attention and friendliness in Chicago. And the what they say is true. Ace is the place with the helpful hardware folks.

I've been going to this store for many years off and on. If I'm doing a project and need a tool or…read moresoil quickly, because it's the closest one to my home. When I go in, I ask where something I need is located in the store and all I want is to just go make a decision and get in and out as quickly as possible. Usually a man/clerk will tag only and mansplain and second guess my choice, or ask me how I know what I need. Basically saying things that are extremely outdated and sexist. I've gone in and watched how male shoppers are treated and it's a whole different thing. If you bring it to the cashiers attention in hopes she will let management know and make a change that fits with this decade, you hear, they're just trying to be gentlemen, hun. If you're a woman that is capable and isn't a damsel in distress, you shouldn't go there. It's an absurd and incredibly upsetting experience.

Two online orders with local experiences:…read more Ordered garden soil online and paid for truck delivery. They showed up on time and delivered our many super heavy bags exactly as we had instructed. Very friendly, too. Ordered an a/c unit online, my husband installed it, it was way way too loud, twice the advertised (not Home Depot's fault but the manufacturer's) decibels (I have a meter). Ugh. Husband had to box it up again and we brought it to the store to return. The return was quick and hassle-free. We bought a different unit and an employee named Tom was so incredibly helpful, went out of his way for us. We also had them price match it with Lowes and they just took my word for the price difference. Hassle-free ordering, returns and deliveries and friendly employees who don't avoid you in the aisles? I had no idea this was a thing happening in 2021!

Went to the self checkout for a hassle free, no contact, quick trip to buy a pressure washer,…read moreattachments & a mailbox. Instead, I had some long haired, short grubby looking employee walk up to me while I'm scanning items, look at my stuff and say "wow this is a mess" (about the 6 boxed items I had neatly stacked for easy scanning) and proceed to start picking up and touching my items with his dirty booger fingers. Then he promptly started commanding me to scan items I'd already scanned, once he realized that I already had, he just stood there watching over me until I finished checking out. It felt pretty awkward and kind of humiliating. When I come dressed in business attire, these kinds of employees kiss my ass, when I come dressed in relaxed clothing, I get treated like a thief; granted I'm a 6'2 240lb Marine Corp combat veteran with tattoos only visible in T-shirt's. Either way, completely unacceptable way to treat customers, I certainly felt profiled, I can't imagine how this employee treats people in work clothes like.
