On Sunday, July 19, I visited the Home Depot in San Luis Obispo (Madonna Road) to return a drill…read more Unfortunately, I had fallen behind on some bills and needed the refund in cash. It was a difficult and stressful decision because I really didn't want to return the drill, but I had no other choice. The young associate at the Service Desk was courteous and doing his best, but he was unable to process the refund. The original debit card I used to purchase the drill was tied to a bank account that had since been closed, so refunding the original payment method wasn't possible. A store credit also wouldn't help because I needed the money to pay my bills. The associate repeatedly told me there were no other options and even tried to convince me that calling a manager wouldn't make any difference. I respectfully disagreed. I simply wanted to make sure every possible option had been explored before giving up. I asked that a manager come over so I could hear the answer directly from someone with the authority to make those decisions. While the associate was explaining the situation over the phone, I had to remind him to mention one of the most important details--that my original bank account had been closed. That was a key part of why this wasn't a typical return and why I felt a manager's assistance was appropriate. Manager Daniel came over and immediately approached the situation with a positive attitude and a genuine desire to help. Instead of focusing on why something couldn't be done, he focused on finding a solution. After working through the issue, he was able to authorize a cash refund. Daniel completely turned around what had been a very stressful experience. He demonstrated excellent leadership, strong problem-solving skills, and a customer-first attitude that I believe every manager should strive for. As someone who spends a significant amount of money at Home Depot, this is exactly the level of service that keeps customers coming back. I also hope the associate learned something valuable from the experience. Sometimes the answer isn't "no"--it's simply that the situation requires someone with additional authority or experience. Daniel showed that taking a few extra minutes to explore every option can make a tremendous difference in a customer's day. Thank you, Daniel, for your professionalism, compassion, and outstanding customer service. Home Depot made an excellent decision in promoting you to a management position, and I hope your leadership is recognized. You made my day, and I'm truly grateful.

I've looked for the last two weeks both online and at various hardware stores for a replacement. My neighbor finally told me about Aura Hardwood so I beat it up to their shop today and was delighted to discover that not only did they carry the entire hinge assembly, but they were more than happy to sell me only the part that broke! I have over $70 worth of hinges that I have to return to other stores because they didn't work as promised, and this hinge part cost me $.86. I gave the guy a fiver and damn near hugged him, telling him to keep the change and buy himself a soda and I'll be back in a week or two with some homemade brownies. This guy could've easily ripped me off for $15 or $20, but instead he was honest and displayed exceptional customer service skills. SLO Hayward - A legend in it's own mind…read more I had a product arrival question and emailed the manager about it. After two days and no response (email or phone) from the manager, I dropped by the store and had wonderful assistance from a young lady at the counter about our $36K door order. When I asked her about why the manager hadn't gotten back, she dutifully said that 'he was busy' to which I responded I don't care. I felt the young lady who assisted me was put in the line of fire while the manager sat back at his desk in the corner. Bogus. This store seems to be a somewhat 'When, or if, I get to it' business model. Although, the cabinet division 'and team' are good to work with. In the all and all, it's interesting that they don't seem to be aware of or care about their poor business model or at perhaps the execution of a good business model (?). In contrast, the Santa Maria store seems receptive to the importance of servicing customers with competence. So, I've shifted in that direction to finish our project. An inconvenience worth the effort.

Inside the store, the quality of the donations has also risen, as there were several substantial and well made pieces of furniture available for extremely reasonable prices. All wood, quiet-close drawers and quality hardware make many of these pieces a real bargain. We were greeted by the friendly manager upon entering the store, and he talked knowledgably about several of the furniture pieces. The back section of the store is devoted to hardware and fixtures and fitting, which are great if you are in the middle of a project and need supplies. We got some old kitchen cabinets here when we increased storage in our garage, and picked up enough engineered hardwood to redo the entryway to our house.
