I'm doing some work that required a stout piece of angle iron, and my search ended here. The…read morelocation is in a very modern industrial section of Olathe, so I was worried that I'd be unable to afford the steel. But I was worried for naught: the 2"x2"x3/16" surplus angle iron I picked up was surprisingly affordable! My visit was strictly retail, and it was also quick and surprisingly easily accomplished. I doubt any home improvement or hardware store has anything close to this impressive steel selection at anything close to surplus prices. I was fortunate to speak with the owner Dayna when I called, and when I arrived, after she'd finished with another customer, she "showed me the ropes", in other words how to find what I wanted from the various places where it's stocked in piles or in racks here. She even provided me with gloves so my hands stayed clean. Next time I hope to remember to bring work gloves. This is a BIG steel company, and they also sell in quantities to industry, so the selection is very impressively varied. Being a sort of casual, limited-needs customer, I still felt well treated, including when I needed my selection cut to size by Darrell (in one of the large bays out behind the retail shop). Recently spoke to several metal fabrication shops regarding the repair of some fairly generic,…read moremetal panels used in industry revenue collection. The Custom Metal & Fabrication (CM&F) quoted price was by far the most reasonable, so I gave them the job. I received a friendly call a week later saying the repairs were completed. When I arrived to pick-up the panels, I found the following: - The price was higher than what we originally agreed upon. In speaking to CM&F about the difference, they indicated more labor was required than initially thought. As the new price was still better than the other quotes I received, I accepted that. - Custom Metal & Fabrication did a great job on the repair, but unfortunately also damaged the panels in the process to the point where they were unusable. As this panel damage was very noticeable, I was truly surprised CM&F even presented the panels to me as "completed". When this matter was discussed, they felt the cause was the amount of overall repairs needed. While I can certainly understand that, they should have discussed this matter with me before accepting the job, instead of expecting me to accept the damaged panels. They offered to make new, replacement panels at their cost, after their attempt at fixing the now damaged panels only made matters worse, despite previously telling me they could not make new, replacement panels (that matter was originally discussed before they accepted the job). CM&F contacted me when the new, replacement panels were ready and I met them at their shop. In eyeballing the new, replacement panels, I questioned whether they were the correct shape and CM&F commented they could not get any closer. Hoping for the best and seeing no alternative, I paid CM&F for the original work (at the higher than quoted price) and left hoping and praying the new, replacement panels fit correctly. Alas, they are not close enough to be usable (the shape is extremely important for a correct and solid fit). Had CM&F not based the new, replacement panels on the original, ruined panels, they may have been successful. So here I am with two original panels ruined, two replacement panels I cannot use, and out the cost of the failed repairs. CM&F certainly tried to make things right by making the new, replacement panels at their costs, and I give them a lot of credit for that. However, the entire situation would have been avoided if they have had: - Discussed the potential repair issues/risks with me ahead of time - or Agreed to make new, replacement panels from the beginning (based on the then not ruined, original panels) - or Said no to the job (CM&F did state during that final visit they wished they had never accepted the job). Understandable, but irrelevant since they did agree to do the job. All in all, I will be looking elsewhere for my future metal fabrication needs.
