The road to get to this campground is very winding and narrow. We scratched our RV driving past trees alongside this narrow road. When we arrived at the road to this CG, it was bumpy and choppy, and the rest of this CG was a disappointment. Our spot faces an old barn with an old, moldy RV parked in front. Once here, we didn't want to leave the CG, because it took too long to get here from the main road. We were in the mood to eat dinner out, but cooked instead. We won't come here again.

Thats how 7 friends and I felt when we were planning our weekend trip to Berkeley Springs (well, maybe we weren't that dramatic). I can't speak for all of the properties, but SLEEPY RIDGE HIDEAWAY was a dream come true! A small full kitchen with bedrooms to sleep 8 people and two bathrooms. Inside we had a wood burning stove which was great on a cool rainy evening. Outside there was a screened in porch and a back deck. There was a fire pit where which we made use of regularly! A game room with air hockey and shuffleboard. But the best part....a hot tub!!! And yes we fit 8 people in there! This cabin also had a nice trail down a hill to the creek below which was very serene and was a 10 minute drive to good hiking trails. If you need to get away...check out berkely springs and all the cabins they have to offer....ours was about $45 per person for the weekend!

It's a perfect place to clear your mind and enjoy some quiet time. The flat paved surface makes it easy for everyone whether you're an experienced biker or just out for a relaxing walk. I also liked how calm it was, not too crowded which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. The sunlight filtering through the trees and the sound of leaves underfoot make this trail feel special. I highly recommend visiting during early morning or late afternoon for the best light and the most peaceful atmosphere. We walked away from Hancock and there's an awesome overlook about a mile or two away that's a must see if you're in the area. Also impressive to see the rock "walls" they blasted through back in the day to create the railroad. Further down the road, the train combines with the C&O trail for a while, so that part is gravel/dirt rather than pavement so plan accordingly if it's been rainy. While I'm sure there is excellent hunting, fishing, trapping, hiking, camping - etc. - etc. - etc…read more going on here, we just came for the overlook. For years I've seen the signs, the same as everyone that traverses 68, about a scenic overlook, this time, it was finally time to see just how scenic is scenic. First off, super easy to find the overlook. Exit 64 off of 68, this applies to either direction, then it's just two right turns to the main park office. Plenty of offseason parking in winter, as you would expect, and there is good signage telling you where to go for the office, the overlook, outside seasonal restrooms and some of the nearby trails. From there it's maybe a fifty or sixty yard walk down a small sloped path to the wooden planked overlook. Kudos to the staff that even though it had just snowed the day prior, they had a small path cleared so that you could walk out on to the platform. Granted, the platform was also coated in thick ice, but that's another story. Excellent views of the forest landscape and of Fifteen Mile Creek. We didn't last long as even though it was sunny, it was still below freezing with a hell of a stiff breeze. On the way back up the trail we did stop briefly in the park office looking for a map as a souvenir/memento and while the door was open and there was a state vehicle parked outside (just our car and that one), nobody was there so we left as it felt...odd. The park itself is massive and hopefully in the future we can make the time to come back and explore more. We found all the staff at Eagle's Nest to be very pleasant, friendly and accommodating. We had about 15 rigs, and rented one cabin. Paul placed us in sites very near each other, and close to the pavilion which perfectly met our needs for the event. The pavilion near the creek, with electricity, lighting, a nearby restroom, and running water, was a great set-up for our group meetings and meals. Paul even set up a fire ring near the pavilion for our evening campfire and music. The camp facilities were very clean and level, with full services at each site. The restaurant on site (Fireside Inn) has an extensive menu. Try the cauliflower soup ... it is FABULOUS. Eagles Nest is conveniently located near Cumberland, MD - a great local tourism spot with museums, shops, restaurants, and a scenic railroad ride. The campground is still a work in progress and we look forward to going back to see how it is coming along. Paul has a great vision for further improvements and is working hard toward that end. With a mix of seasonal and transient residents, most in self-contained units, there is little need for public facilities. A bit of a mixed bag for me at Cunningham Falls…read more.. I was excited to find a listing of parks that supposedly had wheelchair accessible trails. I've never been to Cunningham Falls before and the idea of seeing a waterfall seemed lovely. However, the accessible boardwalk has strips on pretty much everything board which made me feel like I was riding a very angry horse. Each bump shot pain up my spine. I'm writing this a day later and I still hurt, and I think I'm a pretty tough chick... and the view of the falls was mostly blocked and not worth the actual pain. The Falls is more like a small stream of water that splashes down some rocks. It's a soothing noise but I was expecting something more grandiose... I suppose I could blame climate change. Most of the old stream beds are dry. We also checked out the "south beach" which I enjoyed. There's plenty of pavement, and packed gravel. I couldn't get close to the water, but that's okay because it was a sunny day and I prefer to stick to the shade. I was impressed by the fact that every picnic table has a grill nearby. If I lived closer I'd like to think I'd come to the south beach often, hide in the trees near the river, grill something delicious... but I was a several hours long trip from Dundalk, so it's unlikely that I'll return. It was a nice day-trip though. I don't regret going.
