I am very happy with the sushi every time we go here. Friendly staff and clean restaurant. Reasonably priced but as always that depends on the rolls or sushi you choose. Restaurant parking can be difficult like all places in laguna and the small nature of the store can be difficult at times but it is rarely overcrowded. I have to admit that the sushi cut roll menu is creative and got me excited at the beginning and I did not expect it to be authentic; however, I have to say that it was the worst sushi experience in my life! The first special cut roll, forgot the name of it but it has albacore spicy tuna and avocado in it, was not bad. Generous amount of avocado makes every bite smooth as silk. The special rainbow cut roll inside out came in 5 pieces which was made of mostly imitation crab meat and not much of fish meat in it. It was cut into different sizes that one end piece is as big as 2 pieces (lay flat on the plate) and the other end piece was smaller than the other pieces (it did not even hold its shape: the fish chunks, seaweed sheet, rice were spread out on the plate in a not so nice looking way)! It blew my mind away that a plate in such condition would be served at a restaurant! If it was meant to serve that way then the chef and I certainly hold a different level of appreciation in art of food presentation. Way over priced and not worth the money; order something else. The soft shell crab cut roll is a disappointment. It came in 6 or 8 nigiri pieces and each piece has crispy crab leg fragments. I am sorry to say but the body and the big claws were not in it. The cut roll is actually pricier than Sushi Island in Costa Mesa, but the amount of soft shell crab in it and the size of the cut roll are like day and night... The sauce came with the dish...I do not understand how did it happened but there were fried flour pieces and something else that have been soaked for a while in it! Way over priced and not worth the money; order something else. Good food makes me happy and bad food makes me upset. Hapi Sushi did not make me happy at all... Definitely on my black list. read more

Had the worst experience here last weekend. First of all the service is terrible, food is overpriced for the portions, and it takes forever to get in a order. $12 for a specialty tuna roll that should of costs $6-7. One chef for the entire place, really? They just slop it on a plate and give it to you, bad presentation. The best sushi I have ever had. Words can't explain how much I love this place. I live in AZ now but when i lived in Laguna a few years back i discovered this gem. Now we come back to Laguna Beach a few times a year. Of course we are here for the paradise that is laguna but also just as much for Hapi sushi. One of our yearly trips always falls around our spring break here in AZ which also falls around my b-day. It never fails that I will go to the restroom while at Hapi sushi and come back to find my hubbie has collaborated with the owner to make me a beautiful b day dessert treat usually green tea ice cream or designs cut into a orange or pineapple (works of edible art, just like his sushi). We have noticed every single time we come the same Bob Marley CD is playing over there speakers in this quaint hut. Since, everytime we hear a Marley song we can't help but have day dreams about the wonderful vacations and yummy food we have in laguna and at Hapi sushi. Being that we only come to town a few times per year we thought it was a extremely odd coincidence, so we asked our server if they always only play Bob Marley and we found they really only own few Cd's they rotate. I was shocked. I went to this sushi restaurant because of a good review from a friend. They actually refused to serve us---a party of six---because they "had no room" even though the restaurant was empty. We asked how long the wait time would be and they said "no, no room." So apparently if you have a party that's greater than four people, you can't get served here. I'll never come back. read more

We wanted to order slowly, one roll at at a time (if the food was not good, we would have gone to another place after one roll) The first roll was delicious, the seaweed salad was fantastic. This place is the worst I found in OC. Crew is not japanese, the place is not very clean. Waitres did not know what to recommend. Spicy tuna hand roll was barely in one piece. After years of benefiting from other Yelper's reviews, this experience galvanized me to sign up for an account. In the mood for some sushi, I decided to walk in to Hapi Sushi on a Friday night. It was oddly empty, but that wasn't a big deal - I was just looking forward to eating some good sushi and considered myself lucky that I would be getting more attention! As soon as I sat down, I knew I should have left, but my beer had already arrived and it would have been too awkward to leave at that point. I immediately noticed that the sushi refrigerator wasn't very clean and the fish inside looked tired. For example, the tuna was drying on the edges and curling up and the salmon looked like it had some specs of something else that had dropped on it. Fear overtook me and I lost my appetite for raw fish so I tried to get away with just ordering a couple of rolls that were baked or had tempura in them instead. As another review pointed out, everything in these is filler. In both my rolls, the filler was a sweet imitation crab meat salad (even though one of the rolls was supposed to be tuna). These rolls are then topped with a creamy sauce (mayo-based?) and a drop of Sriracha hot sauce and some chopped scallions. The sauce admittedly tastes pretty good, but it also clearly masks any taste of the underlying fish/filler (intentional)? Literally, you could have put the sauce on a McDonald's filet-o-fish and it would have tasted the same. And just when I thought another Yelp review was probably exaggerating when they said they had a fly buzz by, I too had a small fly buzzing around my plate. Yuck. And then the chef sneezed and blew his nose. Without washing his hands afterwards. That was the end of my dinner. The chef did seem like a nice guy - I wish I could have written a more upbeat review. read more

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this sushi. This is located right in the center of Laguna close to the lifeguard tower. I suggest you find your parking spot, walk down the the beach to watch the sunset, and let the happy belly commence! I could go all night on the Japanese burrito. Spicy amazing-ness on my mouth. The fish is always wonderful, the rice cooked perfectly, lots of unique rolls to try, and GREAT service. The sushi chef, and Mario always make sure you are taken care of. The owner chose the wrong name for this restaurant- it should be rude, disturbing sushi not Hapi Sushi. I had been here once before, but only as a carry out order, so I was unaware of the service problem. We had stopped by for a quick sushi fix after spending the morning at the Farmers Market and the Laguna Art Museum. We had a big breakfast at Urth Cafe and were craving a lite lunch. We sat at the counter and ordered a couple of miso soups and a maki roll. The guy behind the sushi counter who took our order stood there watching us for a few minutes until he finally leaned in and said" the owner doesn't like it when you don't order more food". I thought he was kidding but as I looked over we saw the owner standing in the corner of the restaurant glaring at us. It was definitely confusing, I have never encountered this type of behavior before. The other couple in the restaurant finished their meal and walked out and as soon as they did, the owner turned on the tv at full volume ensuring our meal was uncomfortable and rushed. We quickly finished, paid and walked out vowing to never return. Honestly, I couldn't even rate the food due to the fact that the entire experience was incredulously disappointed. The owner needs to understand that he should be grateful for any business he can get, Laguna Beach is a small town and repeat business from local diners is what will sustain him- but I doubt he understands that. read more

Great little sushi restaurant! This is a TINY restaurant but I got the impression their main focus is take out. My husband asked if they would make him Chirashi, which wasn't on the menu, and they were happy to do it. I'm pregnant so I ordered rolls with cooked fish, but my husband said the fish in his Chirashi and tuna handroll were very fresh. Definitely a nice place for a date night :) Overall it was a great experience and we'll definitely be back! read more

Was a bit skeptical when we walked in--looked like a deadzone though admittedly it was mid afternoon. Fortunately we decided to stay. Out came the chef--an old school Japanese chef who has been running the sushi bar for over 30 years. I love this type of place--call me old school but I spent over a decade in Japan and am very picky about sushi--freshness of course, but also ambience. Most sushi bars these days are run by non-Japanese and frankly they just aren't as good. For me, if I see a non-Japanese chef in a sushi bar, I immediately walk out. We spoke with the chef, in Japanese, and he told us his life story of coming to the US in the 70's, raising two boys who are now successfully working in other professions. He is very proud but also a bit sad that no one will take over his sushi bar--the oldest by the way in Laguna Beach. Anyway, would highly recommend you go out of the way--past the flashy sushi places and come to this one. This is how it should be, and how most sushi bars in Tokyo look. In terms of recommended selection, again I'm old school--hamachi is my top pick, along with Sake (salmon, not the drink, though of course that's great as well), and tako (octopus). He also had a unique salmon with vinegar and onions on it that was amazing. Walked in for lunch, walked out after great food, conversation, and a bit of a history lesson. Priceless. read more
