Sauces and beef pan fried dumpling

Fast, friendly, and super yummy! Great place for a fast casual lunch. Tried both the pork and beef (preferred the pork) and they were so good! They come out fast and hot! And the sauces were great too!

Spicy Pork Dumpling Soup

Came here for lunch in downtown Sacramento. I ordered the spicy dumpling pork soup with 10 dumplings. This was so delicious!!! The spicy level was 6/10. Definitely not for the timid; I can handle spicy level 7 comfortably. The broth was similar to pork tonkatsu. This really hit the spot and made me really happy. Food was made fresh at peak lunch hour and took about 15 minutes. I'll be back when I'm in town.

They were good dumplings but needed to be cooked more the dough was still too chewy and service was good. Ambiance was fine since it was late at night a decent amount of young adults eating dinner.

12 PC Pan-Fried Veggie Dumplings and Scallion Pancake
Jacob M.

Glad to see dumplings are alive and well in Sacramento. I've had the pleasure of eating at this location as well as the South Sacramento location over the years, and I've never been let down. I won't lie, dumpling places aren't always on my radar when I want to eat out, but Hao Bao is probably one of the only dumpling spots I actually crave. Today I shared a modest order of 12 pan-fried veggie dumplings with house sauce and a scallion pancake. It was perfect: fast, filling, affordable, and one of the reasons this place has thrived on K Street all these years. It can be a little warm in there, but they had a fan blowing at least. Normally I'd go for pork dumplings, but the vegetable dumpling blew me away. The filling was shiitake and cabbage, surprisingly juicy and packed with flavor, and paired perfectly with the soy-vinegar-garlicky house sauce. Scallion pancakes are a personal favorite of mine, though I've been let down by them at other spots across the city. This was my first time trying them at Hao Bao, and honestly, it's probably the best one I've ever had. They nailed it: thin, crispy, yet still doughy and chewy, with perfectly flaky layers and scallions rolled right in. Man, what a treat. I could eat multiple orders. This place just ticks a lot of boxes for me and is the ideal place for a quick bite. The food comes out fast, it's very filling, the customer service is always great, and the prices are totally reasonable. I love this place and have for years. So glad to see they're still wrapping the best dumplings in Sacramento. One day, I'm getting that 120 piece dumpling tray for my birthday.

House Chow Mein
Jaane F.

We dined in and ordered the house chow mein and Beijing noodles. The chow mein had an overly strong wok hei flavor, and many of the chicken pieces were burnt, which made it disappointing. The Beijing noodles were still fine--flavorful and well-balanced. The staff was friendly, which we appreciated, but overall the experience was just so-so due to the inconsistency in food quality.

Craved for some dumplings after a show in the area. Self service kiosk to place your order and then seat yourself. Food will be brought out by the staff. Food came out within 10 mins. I ordered Hao Bao Tacos, Pork Dumpling combo and added a side of teriyaki sauce. Tacos and dumplings were good but were lukewarm. I prefer them to be hotter. Teriyaki sauce was nothing special. House special sauce is the way to go. All the staff are in the kitchen so it will take a while to get assistance if you need any. They forgot my drink so I had to wait until someone came out to ask about it.

Audriana N.

Nothing special. Very greasy. I had one of the noodle bowls. The noodles were very dense. Think: I took the outside of a potsticker, cut it into a noodle shape, then threw some dry meat on top. Not much to say about service, this is very much a takeout spot.

Late night snack

This is a pleasant surprise for downtown Sacramento. It's quality authentic Chinese food available at very late hours. The dumplings are made to order and can take some time to be prepared. The restaurant is small, but they package food well to-go if you want to walk it back to your hotel. The restaurant is air conditioned but can't handle large groups. The steamed pork dumplings are good and large enough to share between 2-3 people. I really liked their house dipping sauce, nice mix of sweet, savory and little bit of heat and spice.

Bar seating, felt private

Enjoyed a bowl of a 10piece beef dumpling soup. I opted for self service ordering since the gent at the register was taking a call in order. Service was quick and I was already sipping on soup and snapping these photos in a couple of minutes. Even on a warm day, I enjoyed having the soup. Requested chopsticks but soup spoon, fork, and napkins come when the tray is served. Would have loved to have tried some garlic chili oil but could not tell if any were any available, as there were no condiments on the tables. Fair pricing, the wrapper was a little thicker than I'm used to, and the meats were all uniform in taste, size, and texture. The soup was flavorful and beautifully garnished with tasty green and white onions. Very good soup, I almost finished it all. If you like noodles, you can order some on the side, but to me, the dumpling wrapper was all the extra noodle I would want. Was able to finish the bowl, but could have easily saved half for later. Looks like they would have lids and baggies readily available for to go. Satisfying, good taste, fast, would definitely go again. Not many places still open in this part of downtown, so the good ratings here are well deserved.

Came here because it was one of very few late-night eats. The dumplings were mediocre, would've just gone to In-n-Out instead.

I've been to other restaurants where the sauce was not fresh and tasted like tap water. They have a buffet for sauces and veggies. A drink is included, and they have a soda fountain with Coke Zero (big plus for me)! I recommend starting with the cream cheese wontons, and ending your meal with a nice condensed milk bun for dessert. The wontons are crispy and delicious and the milk bun was soft and the perfect portion! The restaurant is clean and has beautiful decorations. There are two private rooms folks can reserve as well. There is a parking lot behind the restaurant where you can park.

I originally came in fully committed to ordering the Bún Bò Huế (P4), but the moment I heard about the $3.50 giant rib add-on, all bets were off. I switched to the P1 Combo Pho just so I could have that massive, fall-off-the-bone rib soaking in that rich, aromatic broth and it was absolutely worth it. The broth was deeply savory and comforting, layered with flavor without being overly salty, and that rib took things to another level. Tender, meaty, and perfectly braised, it made each bite feel extra indulgent. My boyfriend went with the bánh mì pork sandwich, and we added fried egg rolls for the table. The bánh mì had that perfect balance of crispy baguette, juicy pork, and fresh pickled veggies, while the egg rolls came out hot, crunchy, and packed with flavor. We also got the chance to meet the owner/chef and had such a great conversation, which made the whole experience feel even more personal. Service was friendly and attentive throughout the night. The chow fun was especially disappointing--it just wasn't tasty at all. The orange chicken looked great, but honestly, I'd say Panda Express has more flavor. The chow mein and fried rice were also pretty bland. The chicken with vegetables was okay, nothing special. The highlight for us was definitely the chicken and cilantro dumplings--they were actually really good (which makes sense given the restaurant's name). Overall, it just wasn't for us. Despite there being endless selections in Sacramento sometimes the American Chinese options are .... bleh ... They are either too oily. Mediocre taste. Overpriced. It's hard to find one that really stands out. Recently my coworkers and I all pitched in on takeout from here for Lunar New Year and ordered five dishes as takeout. One of my coworkers was the one who recommended this spot. Let me just say the food was incredible. The seafood chow mein was the standout dish out of everything. Loaded with octopus tentacles, scallops, shrimp. Feel like half the time you get seafood options these days they skimp out but this place did not disappoint. The fried rice was a little more unique than I've personally tried before with pieces of beef and cabbage. But still very tasty. And the pork dishes we got including the sweet and sour were just incredible. One thing I do want to mention was some pieces of the pork did have a bone attached, but I honestly didn't mind it much. The flavor made it up for it. Also inside of this place looks very modern, clean. Since we only got takeout I can't say for certain service for sit down but ordering and getting our food was simple. The staff were very kind and friendly. Again, THANK GOD I finally have a good Chinese food option. No more oily salty food or Panda Express.

I've dined in before and the tables are fully set up with all the necessary condiments, but today I just needed to get home and hope the food could do its thing. I ordered the pho gai, which is lighter and cleaner than the typical Vietnamese beef pho. The broth has a slightly fermented, deeply umami flavor, probably from fish sauce, along with lemongrass, chicken broth, chicken breast, and ginger. Perfect when you're stuck with a cold. It was packaged really well with chili oil, jalapeños, celery, lime, and the noodles on the side. There isn't a ton of chicken if you're looking for high protein, but I didn't care. It was so good and soothing. Nothing like sweating over a bowl of herbal soup while sick. I also ordered the Lao sausage, which has a great blend of aromatics, especially lemongrass. It comes with a sauce I'm not totally familiar with, but it's bright and limey, likely fish-sauce based, with something like charred pepper or tomato that almost reminds me of a Mexican salsa. So good. This place is awesome. I've only ever gotten soups here, but I definitely need to branch out and try more of the menu. Prices are very fair too. The soup alone was just under 1.5 liters so great bang for your buck.
