I had a manufacturer defect on my shoes. manufacturer told me to go back to the store. I returned to the location I purchased the shoes, it was NOT this store. Not here to talk bad about others. My wife said call another location and just ask. I waited a few months, should have taken my wife's advice, but I called the Royal Oak store and talked to Luke. He said come in and he will help me. Sure, I thought, just like the other one did. Well, Luke actually did help me. Fixed the problem and away went. I walked out extremely happy customer thanks to Luke. This is my favorite shop for my running shoes every year or so, though I am in need of a new pair. The staff are usually all runners and are know first hand what shoes are the latest and greatest. They are so good about making sure you try on as many shoes needed to get the right fit and comfort for running. Since they are so knowledgeable they will often have recommendations on which brands are the best fit for your feet, for arch issues or if my running gait leans more to the right or left. I have had so many running shoes from here. They have Brooks, Asics, Saucony, New balance and even addidas. The last one was by new balance. I don't buy my running shoes from anywhere else but here. Ok, I just got home from Hansons and I literally ran to my computer to write a review. I loved the experience of shopping there SO MUCH. An eensy weensy backstory -- I wore Brooks shoes for years and years, but as most of you know they change the styles every year. So the last pair I got -- a new version of the shoe I had previously loved and worn -- were huge duds. I wore them and tried to make them work, but I hated them and was turned off to the brand. Fast forward to Dry January 2021, 10 months of quarantine and takeout, I'm trying to get more active. I need new shoes and I feel completely adrift. So me, adrift, goes for the cutest option I can find online. And OH they cute, but they SO didn't fit. I tried to make them work around the house for a few days before I knew I'd end up with an injury or something if I kept wearing shoes that weren't right. I feel compelled to mention that I previously avoided running stores. I'm not a "real" runner, and having shopped at another one before, I found it horribly intimidating. I also had the notion that shoes there would be more expensive than online retailers. SPOILER: They're not. That said, I had heard great things about Hansons, and I knew I was not to be trusted on my own, clearly. I gave the girl working the whole rundown (sorry I don't remember your name). I told her my activity level, that I like a cushy shoe. She watched me walk, let me know (kindly) I was looking for the wrong type of shoe, and even the wrong size! Literally the very first pair of shoes she pulled for me (Brooks) were perfect. They feel like clouds on my feet and I never want to take them off. On top of that, she pointed me towards some socks that I, again, would never have found on my own that just take the cloud shoes to a whole new level. I needed new running shoes and someone suggested that I go here to try them on because you can run on a treadmill to see if the shoes are a good fit for you based on how you run. I had seen reviews that weren't great, but the closest store that did something similar was a half hour drive away, so I figured I could check Hansons out first. I was quickly greeted and put into a pair of shoes to run. It's definitely cool to see how your feet fall on the ground in the shoes, but I honestly wasn't blown away by the whole experience of it. The guy helping me only had me run in the first pair of shoes and said that they would be perfect. He then gave me another pair to try that were a little different but the same brand. That's really it. He said out of all the shoes in the store, these two would be the only ones for me and didn't have me try on any others. Maybe I was looking for something more, but I was surprised that I only tried on two pairs of shoes from the same brand out of all the ones they have in the store. They had a money back guarantee as long as I didn't get the bottoms too dirty, so I ended up buying them (they were $119). I do like the shoes and I have kept them and wore them to run a triathlon, so maybe they were right and just did their job correctly. I just found it funny that he knew from seeing me walk 20 feet into the store which exact pair of shoes would be perfect for me. It makes me feel like they're trying to sell you the more expensive shoes, and I wish I would have had him pick out a bad pair of shoes for me so I could see the difference in them. Also, they do have a wide selection of shoes, but there weren't too many options when it comes to colors. While it is not customary to purchase new shoes and run with them on race day, I would like to have checked out the selection and prices here before making a sound decision. This is your stereo typical running store, or most of the product and merchandise is basically running stuff and running shoes. Half of the space is for running shoes and the other half is for clothing and apparel runners wear to go out and have a fantastic run and race. I was here on a nice Friday morning on October 21. A friend of mine had recommended this store to me, since I told them that I needed new shoes to run in. So, here I was seeing what could find. The service here was good and definitely friendly. I ended up trying a few pairs of neutral shoes before asking the sales guy whether or not they can ship shoes. They unfortunately can't, and with me not living in Michigan, it was tough sell, since my luggage was full as it was anyway. I decided then to patronize them online, where they tend to have good deals there and that was good for me. It was nice to talk with the sales person about running, racing, and Traveling for them. After trying on A bunch of different shoes, the conversation that to talking about the aforementioned above. He was a runner himself but has not done many marathons. They except major credit cards, which is always a good thing, as well as cash. Cash is king no doubt. The parking here is very limited, but they do have a private parking lot for patrons and runners alike. The prices here are market priced for sure, so you can see higher prices for shoes, but you know you can get high quality shoes and expert advice on choosing them here. Whether you are a novice runner getting into the sport, or a season veteran looking to change your shoes for better comfort and ride, you're in the right place, if you are here in Royal Oak's Michigan. They do custom fitting and I think they do gait analysis too, just need to ask them. I wear Saucony Progrid Ride 8's and wanted to see if there are any comparable brands and models out there for me to try. There are some pretty good ones, but as mentioned before, I could not get it home. The sales person gave me good recommendations as to what to look for wait by my next pair of running shoes. I thought that it was great advice and looking forward to doing so in the future. While this running store is near Detroit, Michigan I can only believe that this place is where the party will be at, when training for that your first half marathon or marathon, and you hit the BQ or PR in your race and have Hanson's to thank for it. I know I would be too. The running store self was relatively large for its size, but small enough to make it feel homely and homespun. I did enjoy myself here, trying on new running shoes and talking to Hansons running staff about running and racing. I love Hanson's running shop. I've been to a few other running shops and something I've noticed (in my experience) is that staff members at those running shops are lackluster. Either the staff members are jerks (see my Running Fit review), or their social skills suck. Lack of social skills is not usually a big deal for me in most retail settings (e.g., at places like the Gap, I prefer to be ignored--leave me alone and I'll pick out my own damn jeans, thanks). However, in a running shop, some semblance of social skills is desired because most people need help picking out running shoes--this applies to both the newbie customer and seasoned runner alike. For instance, I fit in the latter category and I've been experiencing ITBS and hip issues as of late. In trying to narrow down the culprit, I wanted to rule out shoes. So I took my (worn) running shoes to Hanson's and a staff member looked at my shoes and could immediately tell, based on the wear patterns, that I was wearing the wrong shoe! So he pulled a bunch of shoes that were appropriate for my foot, I found one I liked, and have pretty much recovered from the ITBS and hip pain. Yay! Contrast this with an experience I had at another shop--the staff member at the other running shop advised that perhaps one of my legs was longer than the other and that I should google ITBS and sent me on my way. Huh. That was weird coz I was all set to buy a $100+ pair of shoes! Anyway, I've never had a bad experience at Hanson's and I'm pleased to give it my support. I really think I should give Hanson's in RO 2 stars, but I'm so terrible at negative comments... I will say my shoes seem to fit well, but my experience was nothing special...it wasn't unforgettable, but that's probably not a good thing. And when you are paying $120 for running shoes, you kind of expect a little bit of customer service, right? When I walked into the store the two very young employees were both on their cell phones and one took a long few minutes to say good-bye to his friend (and I say friend based on the coversations I could plainly hear - neither of them were talking to customers...) I finally got some assistance , and he took me to a platform to stand on. He didn't tell me what it was for, didn't ask about how long I've been running, any problems or anything running related (he didn't really talk at all)...kinda weird since it's a running store. I don't know - everyone I talked to said "Go to Hanson's!!! They are so knowledgeable and helpful!" So I had some lofty expectations. My wife is a runner and had been complaining about her knees hurting, she thought it could be her shoes. A co-worker of mine recommended this place. We went and the staff was knowledgable, and allowed her to take a quick jog outside to try them. I thought that was nice. I had never been to a shoe try specifically for running so that type of service was new to me. Anyway the place was small but nice and we still need to see if the shoes they recommended will help with the knee pain. I've only been once, but my experience was very positive. About six months into my running, I started having ankle pain. I knew my mileage wasn't such that I was due for another pair of shoes, but I was willing to try to a new pair to see if that was the culprit. I ended up at Hanson's because I had to go there anyway to pick up a race packet. I took my shoes even though they didn't have much wear, so it wasn't very helpful to look at them. Still, I explained my problem and they gave me a few pairs to try that they thought would be good for me. I picked one and sure enough my ankle pain hasn't been back since. I went in there expecting to spend $100+, but my shoes were actually only about $80. It's funny because I LOVE them and they are WAY better for me than others I would have picked that would have cost me a lot more. I know they have group runs on Thursdays, which I haven't been to yet but am looking forward to trying sometime. read more

I visited Hanson's after joining a Networkingout Group (Run This Town). They frequent Hanson's quite a bit, so I made it my business to go there in search of a properly fitting running shoe. By running, I mean walking. The 2 staff members were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I mean, I felt bad that my poor foot was being so difficult LOL. My shoe size is up there -- so I had to try on a variety of men's shoes. The two staff members pulled out SO many pairs of shoes for me to try, based on the reading that came from the fitting machine that basically "reads" your feet. I still didn't really find the shoe I needed for the price I wanted. But they were SO helpful and patient and even gave me some suggestions of other places to look that may have had bigger women's shoes, as well as something closer to my price range. Being that it's a "running store", carrying the best of the best in running gear, I expected the prices to be sky high, but geez! All-in-all, though, my experience at Hanson's was great. read more

I hate to say it, but my last few experiences were not good. Little did I know that the 1st pair of running shoes they fitted me in were too small. I went in to get new shoes and that's when I found out. The woman who helped me said that I needed 1 to 1-1/2 sizes bigger for room in the toe box. OK. That's news to me. I thought I had a great experience. She fit me in a pair of Nike's. I never imagined wearing Nike's, but I'm fine with whatever is the best option for my feet. I don't know why I didn't realize it, but they were too narrow. I got them home and realized that they were too tight. I ran in them once and was in agony. I went back to exchange them and try again. The young man who helped me fit me in Asics. He was pretty confident that I needed to go to the 1 full size bigger. I trust them to be the experts and know what's best for the new runners who come in. Well, guess what? They ended up being too big. I have ran in them maybe for 9 miles. Unfortunately, since I ran in them outside, Hanson's will not take them back. So I am stuck with these shoes and selling them on my own. I absolutely take responsibility for not doing my homework. I put way too much trust and faith in their expertise. Clearly, they steered me wrong 3 times. I went to another running store and had a much better experience. I would love to support Hanson's, but they have failed me too many times. Plus, their running group on Thursdays are incredibly rude. I always get very helpful service when I am here. All of the employees are incredibly knowledgeable, so I know I will be leaving with the shoe that is best for me. I recommend bringing in an old pair of shoes so they can check your wear patterns to help determine the proper shoe for you. In addition to shoes, they have a nice select of clothes, hats, socks, bars and gels. They also have a treadmill you can try out when trying on your shoes. The only downside is the very small parking lot (behind the building) and the shoes can be a bit pricey. read more

I came here based on a recommendation from a friend and told them what I needed and they were so helpful. They looked at my feet, watched me walk, and gave me some options that worked for me. Nice shop seems helpful. Though I wear an 8.5 sneaker. I am a beginner runner. 1st time i for running shoes I got an 8.5 for barefoot running. Hardly any cushion. The second pair was Brooks was a 9 with a lot of support perhaps too much. The third pair I got asics a size 9.5. 3 different people. I do not think they really know running shoes. Since I have worn the last pair a while I probably can't change them I think they just sell what they need to There staff has no experience in running. read more

The main reason I had to come here was for a performance sport bra because God knows I'm getting tired of wearing two and three bras when working out or running on the treadmill. Due to the fact I had pay almost $60 - I will advertise the name which is SHEFIT bra; I believe to be the best bra if you have extra at the top (Lol!). Customer service repres were very nice and helpful since I called; initially when I called a guy picked up the phone and he was a little nerves because he wanted to make sure he told me the right information since I was traveling some distance for one thing and he did an awesome job. Now the store I will a little disappointed at because I don't it was going to be this large store but it wasn't - in which you probably don't need that much room but I highly suggest a better dressing room with a door instead of a curtain. I would give them more stars if my first experience in the store was better. I was told by a co-worker who is a runner to go to Hansons for my shoes because they'll set me up with the right shoes. I had signed up for my first 5k and headed up there. I was greeted by a young lady and she started to help me...all is well so far...showed me a couple pairs of shoes and then a "runner" walks in needing help. She stopped helping me and started catering to this other person never again asking me if I was ok or needed more help. I bought a pair of shoes but only because I already had the same pair at home and loved them. I felt that because I didn't look like a runner or talk like one I wasn't offered the same help. I went online when I got home and bought another pair of shoes from the Brooks website. They need to work on treating everyone the same. read more

I just moved up hear from Atlanta and I my expectation might a little high due to all the GREAT running stores there. I went into Hanson's with my fiancé to looking for a new pair of shoes for her based on the Hanson name. She has been wearing the Saucony Omni line for the past few seasons and wanted to try something a little lighter and more "minimalist". The staff at Hanson's was not helpful at all. Instead of helping us select the right shoe for her arch, pronation, and stride all they did was ask us if we were able to find the right size. When we said no they simply said "oh, sorry" and left it at that. We had to prompt him to call the other stores and see if they had the show in stock there (Note: There was only one other customer in the store, being helped by the other sales person, while we were there and all this salesman was doing was drinking his bottle of water watching the TV). At that time we were debating between two different shoes. One would assume since this was the case, and the salesman knew this, he would ask the store if they had both of them in the appropriate size, but no he only asked about one shoe. We then had to request for him to call back and ask about the other shoe. He found out they had both shoes and they were transferring them to the store. The only problem was he did not ask what color they were sending (both shoes can in 2 colors). We decided just to wait and see what came in. It was more than evident the staff at the Royal Oak Hanson's is made up of a bunch of college runners who have come to RO to train. The salesman that we dealt with had little to no knowledge of the human foot and how to fit a running shoe for the best results based on an individual's gait. The service received at Hanson's is what one would expect from Dick's or Dunham's. The only positive thing was the shoes came in the next day. I mentioned I moved up from Atlanta. The running shops in Atlanta I frequented were Fleet Feet in Decatur and the Big Peach Running Company, also in Decatur. Both the stores are AMAZING. They actually know how to fit a runner with the correct shoe. They prefer that you let them pick the shoe after they see you run (either on a treadmill or outside). They will select about 3 different shoes based on what they saw and the criteria you give them. From there they have you run in all three (or however many there are), so you can feel the difference. If you are not satisfied with the shoe you purchase, they take them back (no matter if you wore them on a treadmill or outside because not everyone has access to a treadmill) and try again. If you wanted to hold off and not buy a shoe at that time, they REFUNDED your money. Hanson's gives you store credit. Like I said, the Atlanta stores actually care that you receive the best running shoe for you. It's too bad Hanson's is using their name to attract runners and then providing them with horrible service. It seems as though being a quality shoe store is a distant third to training college runners and making a profit. read more

I was directed to a shelf of running shoes and not given any more attention in the store--even though there was only one other customer and two clerks present. When I asked about running shoes with a lower cushion, I was directed to a different part of the store. No one offered assistance further than that. Basically, I received no help at all, and I would recommend going to Dick's or another franchise store where at least someone will assist you in sizes. This was definitely a let down. read more

Very helpful staff. I walked in to buy a pair of running shoes and told them that I wanted something that supported my arches well. They put me on the machine and informed me that my arches were beginning to fall and we then tried on several pairs of shoes that would be suitable. The girl also had me run on the treadmill to analyze my hair and see if that would factor in. My experience with buying running shoes is usually just buying whatever brand seems popular and I get them in my normal shoe size. However, since I have been running a lot more lately and I plan on doing at least six 5ks this year with the possibility of a 10k, I decided that I should get fitted for some proper running shoes. I went into Handsons today for the first time and the woman who helped me, I think her name was Argenta, was super nice and helpful. She had me walk away from her so she could see how my feet landed and had me stand on this sensor thing to see where I put the most pressure on my feet. She noticed that I tend to roll inward on my left foot so she hooked me up with a guiding shoe. She also said that I should go a half size up so my toes have a bit more room. I am very happy with my experience shopping at this store and I am very glad I went. When it comes time to buy a new pair I will definitely go back. It was nice having someone really trying to help me find something I like and that would work for me and not just trying to make a sale. She was awesome. read more
