Super nice staff that knows a hell of a lot about shoes. very grateful for their insight!

I had a manufacturer defect on my shoes. manufacturer told me to go back to the store. I returned to the location I purchased the shoes, it was NOT this store. Not here to talk bad about others. My wife said call another location and just ask. I waited a few months, should have taken my wife's advice, but I called the Royal Oak store and talked to Luke. He said come in and he will help me. Sure, I thought, just like the other one did. Well, Luke actually did help me. Fixed the problem and away went. I walked out extremely happy customer thanks to Luke. Honestly, Luke saved Hanson's, they would have lost a customer for life. I send everyone to Hanson's, now it will be the Royal Oak location only. Thanks Luke. read more

This is my favorite shop for my running shoes every year or so, though I am in need of a new pair. The staff are usually all runners and are know first hand what shoes are the latest and greatest. They are so good about making sure you try on as many shoes needed to get the right fit and comfort for running. Since they are so knowledgeable they will often have recommendations on which brands are the best fit for your feet, for arch issues or if my running gait leans more to the right or left. I have had so many running shoes from here. They have Brooks, Asics, Saucony, New balance and even addidas. The last one was by new balance. I don't buy my running shoes from anywhere else but here. If you are runner than you already know this is the place for the runners in you. read more

Ok, I just got home from Hansons and I literally ran to my computer to write a review. I loved the experience of shopping there SO MUCH. An eensy weensy backstory -- I wore Brooks shoes for years and years, but as most of you know they change the styles every year. So the last pair I got -- a new version of the shoe I had previously loved and worn -- were huge duds. I wore them and tried to make them work, but I hated them and was turned off to the brand. Fast forward to Dry January 2021, 10 months of quarantine and takeout, I'm trying to get more active. I need new shoes and I feel completely adrift. So me, adrift, goes for the cutest option I can find online. And OH they cute, but they SO didn't fit. I tried to make them work around the house for a few days before I knew I'd end up with an injury or something if I kept wearing shoes that weren't right. I feel compelled to mention that I previously avoided running stores. I'm not a "real" runner, and having shopped at another one before, I found it horribly intimidating. I also had the notion that shoes there would be more expensive than online retailers. SPOILER: They're not. That said, I had heard great things about Hansons, and I knew I was not to be trusted on my own, clearly. I gave the girl working the whole rundown (sorry I don't remember your name). I told her my activity level, that I like a cushy shoe. She watched me walk, let me know (kindly) I was looking for the wrong type of shoe, and even the wrong size! Literally the very first pair of shoes she pulled for me (Brooks) were perfect. They feel like clouds on my feet and I never want to take them off. On top of that, she pointed me towards some socks that I, again, would never have found on my own that just take the cloud shoes to a whole new level. Bonus, I got 10% off for belonging to a gym, so not only were the shoes in fact cheaper than online, the socks were basically free! Hansons, you got a customer for life. read more

One of the best running shoe stores in metro D. I was quickly evaluated and setup with a few options of running shoes. They fit great, with enough room in the toes and for wider feet. Took em for a test run and all is well. read more

Whether you're a serious marathoner or a person wishing you could participate in the community 5K, Hanson's is the place for you. Forget those big shoe stores or DSW, where service is a flash in the pan by someone who probably knows more about fashionable trends than gouty toes and pronating feet. Hanson's is serious about running and serious about helping everyone find some comfy runners. Let's be clear, you'll pay for a quality shoe here. Their shoes come with a guarantee if they do not work for you, you can make an exchange important since shoes are unique to us as haircuts, and you know when a pair of sneakers don't fit or feel right. Sometimes -- often times -- that's not in the store, but two days later trying to pound the pavement with the dog or meandering around Meijer. Hanson's staff know their business, and they offer a wealth of options and insights about what kind of shoes you can get. Price points start around $75 for adult shoes and go up from there. You can get all the bells and whistles, fancy insoles, and cool treats that make you feel somewhat of an accomplished athlete the moment you walk out with your new kicks in tow. But while the option is there, no one has ever up sold me. They tried to match my budget, interest, and purposes -- aspirational and realistic -- all while maintaining integrity and standing by their products. I've returned shoes I had buyer's remorse and pinched toes about for another pair that ended up serving me far better. No stress. They didn't work for me, so Hanson's *did* work to find the shoes with a better toe box for my foot. And I've worn those things to death. You won't be disappointed. They have plenty of running gear and regular running clubs. I wish they were in Berkley so procrastinating about joining a free running group was basically nil, you know? read more

Can't wait to go back. I need more expertise on shoes. They got me right! I used to have sore knees when running, but after a free consultation and being put in the correct shoe....I've never felt better. Thanks team! read more

I love Hanson's running shop. I've been to a few other running shops and something I've noticed (in my experience) is that staff members at those running shops are lackluster. Either the staff members are jerks (see my Running Fit review), or their social skills suck. Lack of social skills is not usually a big deal for me in most retail settings (e.g., at places like the Gap, I prefer to be ignored--leave me alone and I'll pick out my own damn jeans, thanks). However, in a running shop, some semblance of social skills is desired because most people need help picking out running shoes--this applies to both the newbie customer and seasoned runner alike. For instance, I fit in the latter category and I've been experiencing ITBS and hip issues as of late. In trying to narrow down the culprit, I wanted to rule out shoes. So I took my (worn) running shoes to Hanson's and a staff member looked at my shoes and could immediately tell, based on the wear patterns, that I was wearing the wrong shoe! So he pulled a bunch of shoes that were appropriate for my foot, I found one I liked, and have pretty much recovered from the ITBS and hip pain. Yay! Contrast this with an experience I had at another shop--the staff member at the other running shop advised that perhaps one of my legs was longer than the other and that I should google ITBS and sent me on my way. Huh. That was weird coz I was all set to buy a $100+ pair of shoes! Anyway, I've never had a bad experience at Hanson's and I'm pleased to give it my support. Also, if you are a frequent purchaser of shoes, you get $25 off anything in the store if you buy 3 pairs of shoes in one year (which isn't difficult to do if you run a lot). read more

I really think I should give Hanson's in RO 2 stars, but I'm so terrible at negative comments... I will say my shoes seem to fit well, but my experience was nothing special...it wasn't unforgettable, but that's probably not a good thing. And when you are paying $120 for running shoes, you kind of expect a little bit of customer service, right? When I walked into the store the two very young employees were both on their cell phones and one took a long few minutes to say good-bye to his friend (and I say friend based on the coversations I could plainly hear - neither of them were talking to customers...) I finally got some assistance , and he took me to a platform to stand on. He didn't tell me what it was for, didn't ask about how long I've been running, any problems or anything running related (he didn't really talk at all)...kinda weird since it's a running store. I don't know - everyone I talked to said "Go to Hanson's!!! They are so knowledgeable and helpful!" So I had some lofty expectations. Needless to say - I was having some serious pains and needed new shoes, so I bought some. I'm not sure if I got lucky or if the dude was really actually knowledgable without letting me know. The whole thing was just pretty strange. The liklihood of me going back is pretty slim...I don't know, maybe I would go back just to see if there were actually any "knowledgable and helpful" employees... read more

I needed new running shoes and someone suggested that I go here to try them on because you can run on a treadmill to see if the shoes are a good fit for you based on how you run. I had seen reviews that weren't great, but the closest store that did something similar was a half hour drive away, so I figured I could check Hansons out first. I was quickly greeted and put into a pair of shoes to run. It's definitely cool to see how your feet fall on the ground in the shoes, but I honestly wasn't blown away by the whole experience of it. The guy helping me only had me run in the first pair of shoes and said that they would be perfect. He then gave me another pair to try that were a little different but the same brand. That's really it. He said out of all the shoes in the store, these two would be the only ones for me and didn't have me try on any others. Maybe I was looking for something more, but I was surprised that I only tried on two pairs of shoes from the same brand out of all the ones they have in the store. They had a money back guarantee as long as I didn't get the bottoms too dirty, so I ended up buying them (they were $119). I do like the shoes and I have kept them and wore them to run a triathlon, so maybe they were right and just did their job correctly. I just found it funny that he knew from seeing me walk 20 feet into the store which exact pair of shoes would be perfect for me. It makes me feel like they're trying to sell you the more expensive shoes, and I wish I would have had him pick out a bad pair of shoes for me so I could see the difference in them. Also, they do have a wide selection of shoes, but there weren't too many options when it comes to colors. It's not a big deal for me, but I know some people are particular about that, and mine are the brightest orange and only came in that color. read more

Do you like running? Do you like this race? Need shoes and gear to match your fast paced lifestyle? I was in the market for new running shoes, since I run too much and needed new trainers to keep up with me. It's pretty cool how that works out. I had a couple of hours to do some shopping here in Royal Oak before returning to Grand Rapids for race weekend. Thought about new shoes and spotted this running store that was nearby my hotel and thought I would check this place out. While it is not customary to purchase new shoes and run with them on race day, I would like to have checked out the selection and prices here before making a sound decision. This is your stereo typical running store, or most of the product and merchandise is basically running stuff and running shoes. Half of the space is for running shoes and the other half is for clothing and apparel runners wear to go out and have a fantastic run and race. I was here on a nice Friday morning on October 21. A friend of mine had recommended this store to me, since I told them that I needed new shoes to run in. So, here I was seeing what could find. The service here was good and definitely friendly. I ended up trying a few pairs of neutral shoes before asking the sales guy whether or not they can ship shoes. They unfortunately can't, and with me not living in Michigan, it was tough sell, since my luggage was full as it was anyway. I decided then to patronize them online, where they tend to have good deals there and that was good for me. It was nice to talk with the sales person about running, racing, and Traveling for them. After trying on A bunch of different shoes, the conversation that to talking about the aforementioned above. He was a runner himself but has not done many marathons. He considers himself a middle of the pack runner, but does not race long distances as much as I do. Too bad though, it's pretty fun and exciting. This Hansons running shop is located in the beautiful royal oaks area at 3407 Rochester Road. This one store is nestled in many of Royal oak's residential areas. They except major credit cards, which is always a good thing, as well as cash. Cash is king no doubt. The parking here is very limited, but they do have a private parking lot for patrons and runners alike. The prices here are market priced for sure, so you can see higher prices for shoes, but you know you can get high quality shoes and expert advice on choosing them here. Whether you are a novice runner getting into the sport, or a season veteran looking to change your shoes for better comfort and ride, you're in the right place, if you are here in Royal Oak's Michigan. They do custom fitting and I think they do gait analysis too, just need to ask them. I wear Saucony Progrid Ride 8's and wanted to see if there are any comparable brands and models out there for me to try. There are some pretty good ones, but as mentioned before, I could not get it home. The sales person gave me good recommendations as to what to look for wait by my next pair of running shoes. I thought that it was great advice and looking forward to doing so in the future. While this running store is near Detroit, Michigan I can only believe that this place is where the party will be at, when training for that your first half marathon or marathon, and you hit the BQ or PR in your race and have Hanson's to thank for it. I know I would be too. The running store self was relatively large for its size, but small enough to make it feel homely and homespun. I did enjoy myself here, trying on new running shoes and talking to Hansons running staff about running and racing. If you live in and around Royal Oak and need a pair of running shoes, feel free to come here to Hanson's running store. They will fix you right up and get you on your way to your first finish line. The finisher medal is worth it! 4.0 stars for the service and ambiance. 5.0 stars for the advice and conversation. The selection of shoes is diverse, as with many runners out there these days. 4.0 stars for location and the parking is free. Start your journey in running by coming here for your free shoe fitting. May be just the thing to kick start your running life. Support local! B+ read more

My wife is a runner and had been complaining about her knees hurting, she thought it could be her shoes. A co-worker of mine recommended this place. We went and the staff was knowledgable, and allowed her to take a quick jog outside to try them. I thought that was nice. I had never been to a shoe try specifically for running so that type of service was new to me. Anyway the place was small but nice and we still need to see if the shoes they recommended will help with the knee pain. Update: The shoes are perfect for her and took away the knee pain she was having, great job Hansons! read more

I've only been once, but my experience was very positive. About six months into my running, I started having ankle pain. I knew my mileage wasn't such that I was due for another pair of shoes, but I was willing to try to a new pair to see if that was the culprit. I ended up at Hanson's because I had to go there anyway to pick up a race packet. I took my shoes even though they didn't have much wear, so it wasn't very helpful to look at them. Still, I explained my problem and they gave me a few pairs to try that they thought would be good for me. I picked one and sure enough my ankle pain hasn't been back since. I went in there expecting to spend $100+, but my shoes were actually only about $80. It's funny because I LOVE them and they are WAY better for me than others I would have picked that would have cost me a lot more. I know they have group runs on Thursdays, which I haven't been to yet but am looking forward to trying sometime. read more

I visited Hanson's after joining a Networkingout Group (Run This Town). They frequent Hanson's quite a bit, so I made it my business to go there in search of a properly fitting running shoe. By running, I mean walking. The 2 staff members were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I mean, I felt bad that my poor foot was being so difficult LOL. My shoe size is up there -- so I had to try on a variety of men's shoes. The two staff members pulled out SO many pairs of shoes for me to try, based on the reading that came from the fitting machine that basically "reads" your feet. I still didn't really find the shoe I needed for the price I wanted. But they were SO helpful and patient and even gave me some suggestions of other places to look that may have had bigger women's shoes, as well as something closer to my price range. Being that it's a "running store", carrying the best of the best in running gear, I expected the prices to be sky high, but geez! All-in-all, though, my experience at Hanson's was great. read more

I hate to say it, but my last few experiences were not good. Little did I know that the 1st pair of running shoes they fitted me in were too small. I went in to get new shoes and that's when I found out. The woman who helped me said that I needed 1 to 1-1/2 sizes bigger for room in the toe box. OK. That's news to me. I thought I had a great experience. She fit me in a pair of Nike's. I never imagined wearing Nike's, but I'm fine with whatever is the best option for my feet. I don't know why I didn't realize it, but they were too narrow. I got them home and realized that they were too tight. I ran in them once and was in agony. I went back to exchange them and try again. The young man who helped me fit me in Asics. He was pretty confident that I needed to go to the 1 full size bigger. I trust them to be the experts and know what's best for the new runners who come in. Well, guess what? They ended up being too big. I have ran in them maybe for 9 miles. Unfortunately, since I ran in them outside, Hanson's will not take them back. So I am stuck with these shoes and selling them on my own. I absolutely take responsibility for not doing my homework. I put way too much trust and faith in their expertise. Clearly, they steered me wrong 3 times. I went to another running store and had a much better experience. I would love to support Hanson's, but they have failed me too many times. Plus, their running group on Thursdays are incredibly rude. I have asked for the store's help to ask the group to be more courteous and I've seen no change. : ( read more

This is why i like Hanson's: the Sales person, Matt, started by looking at my shoes and my gait and then brought out 4 brands for me to try. He was super helpful. I ended up going with Hokas after many years in Nike. I thought as I get older, maybe the extra cushioning would help. Thanks Natt! read more

I always get very helpful service when I am here. All of the employees are incredibly knowledgeable, so I know I will be leaving with the shoe that is best for me. I recommend bringing in an old pair of shoes so they can check your wear patterns to help determine the proper shoe for you. In addition to shoes, they have a nice select of clothes, hats, socks, bars and gels. They also have a treadmill you can try out when trying on your shoes. The only downside is the very small parking lot (behind the building) and the shoes can be a bit pricey. read more

I'm not a huge runner because of sports injuries, but I do work out a lot and spend a lot of time on my feet/walking. I came here based on a recommendation from a friend and told them what I needed and they were so helpful. They looked at my feet, watched me walk, and gave me some options that worked for me. I'm so happy with my new shoes and I have noticed SIGNIFICANTLY less daily aches and pains now that I have a shoe specific for my feet. The employees are so nice and are very educated about each of their products. read more

The main reason I had to come here was for a performance sport bra because God knows I'm getting tired of wearing two and three bras when working out or running on the treadmill. Due to the fact I had pay almost $60 - I will advertise the name which is SHEFIT bra; I believe to be the best bra if you have extra at the top (Lol!). Customer service repres were very nice and helpful since I called; initially when I called a guy picked up the phone and he was a little nerves because he wanted to make sure he told me the right information since I was traveling some distance for one thing and he did an awesome job. Now the store I will a little disappointed at because I don't it was going to be this large store but it wasn't - in which you probably don't need that much room but I highly suggest a better dressing room with a door instead of a curtain. Other than then I will return once my bra wears out and if they have any sales because I'm too poor to shop here. read more

Holy moly do these people know their stuff! Every time I have gone there, the sales people are super knowledgeable and helpful. I felt that they were not pressuring me to buy anything. I will definitely keep going there! read more

Nice shop seems helpful. Though I wear an 8.5 sneaker. I am a beginner runner. 1st time i for running shoes I got an 8.5 for barefoot running. Hardly any cushion. The second pair was Brooks was a 9 with a lot of support perhaps too much. The third pair I got asics a size 9.5. 3 different people. I do not think they really know running shoes. Since I have worn the last pair a while I probably can't change them I think they just sell what they need to There staff has no experience in running. read more

For shoes, Highly Recommended for excellent personal attention to each customer - their feet, shoe experiences and how they're going to use the shoes. Having a treadmill in store and being able to measure each foot's pressure points are fantastic aids in getting to the right shoes. Big selection of best brands. Jon was a fantastic help on determining a best shoe and best size for me. Not just for runners, but anyone who's a walker or on their feet for long periods of time. read more

I would give them more stars if my first experience in the store was better. I was told by a co-worker who is a runner to go to Hansons for my shoes because they'll set me up with the right shoes. I had signed up for my first 5k and headed up there. I was greeted by a young lady and she started to help me...all is well so far...showed me a couple pairs of shoes and then a "runner" walks in needing help. She stopped helping me and started catering to this other person never again asking me if I was ok or needed more help. I bought a pair of shoes but only because I already had the same pair at home and loved them. I felt that because I didn't look like a runner or talk like one I wasn't offered the same help. I went online when I got home and bought another pair of shoes from the Brooks website. They need to work on treating everyone the same. read more

I've been to 3 of the Hansons locations and this is by far the grungiest, with the worst parking. But that doesn't matter a whit - the staff are great, the selections are outstanding, and it feels good to support a local running store, especially one as famous as Hansons. read more

Have read some reviews in the past about an elitist attitude from the employes of this store, seems to be common in a lot of sports or activities. I'm pleased to say that this was not the case. I am very happy with my experience here. Max was very patient and took time to make sure I found the pair of shoes that worked for me best. I narrowed down my selection and tried several pairs on the treadmill to make sure I found the perfect shoe. The best part is the price was cheaper then online. I ended up getting a pair that I would have never even thought to look at in the past. I will absolutely be coming back here. Great place for all types of runners. read more

I understand Jillian K's comment, but here's the thing about Hansons: the staff there are not sales people. But they are runners. And they really will help you if you ask. PLUS, Hansons really supports communty running, and if you like that, then you need to support shops like Hansons. read more

I just moved up hear from Atlanta and I my expectation might a little high due to all the GREAT running stores there. I went into Hanson's with my fiancé to looking for a new pair of shoes for her based on the Hanson name. She has been wearing the Saucony Omni line for the past few seasons and wanted to try something a little lighter and more "minimalist". The staff at Hanson's was not helpful at all. Instead of helping us select the right shoe for her arch, pronation, and stride all they did was ask us if we were able to find the right size. When we said no they simply said "oh, sorry" and left it at that. We had to prompt him to call the other stores and see if they had the show in stock there (Note: There was only one other customer in the store, being helped by the other sales person, while we were there and all this salesman was doing was drinking his bottle of water watching the TV). At that time we were debating between two different shoes. One would assume since this was the case, and the salesman knew this, he would ask the store if they had both of them in the appropriate size, but no he only asked about one shoe. We then had to request for him to call back and ask about the other shoe. He found out they had both shoes and they were transferring them to the store. The only problem was he did not ask what color they were sending (both shoes can in 2 colors). We decided just to wait and see what came in. It was more than evident the staff at the Royal Oak Hanson's is made up of a bunch of college runners who have come to RO to train. The salesman that we dealt with had little to no knowledge of the human foot and how to fit a running shoe for the best results based on an individual's gait. The service received at Hanson's is what one would expect from Dick's or Dunham's. The only positive thing was the shoes came in the next day. I mentioned I moved up from Atlanta. The running shops in Atlanta I frequented were Fleet Feet in Decatur and the Big Peach Running Company, also in Decatur. Both the stores are AMAZING. They actually know how to fit a runner with the correct shoe. They prefer that you let them pick the shoe after they see you run (either on a treadmill or outside). They will select about 3 different shoes based on what they saw and the criteria you give them. From there they have you run in all three (or however many there are), so you can feel the difference. If you are not satisfied with the shoe you purchase, they take them back (no matter if you wore them on a treadmill or outside because not everyone has access to a treadmill) and try again. If you wanted to hold off and not buy a shoe at that time, they REFUNDED your money. Hanson's gives you store credit. Like I said, the Atlanta stores actually care that you receive the best running shoe for you. It's too bad Hanson's is using their name to attract runners and then providing them with horrible service. It seems as though being a quality shoe store is a distant third to training college runners and making a profit. read more

Headed to Hanson's for my daughter's cross country shoes - no spikes at run of the mill mall locations. The staff at Hanson's was excellent, knew what she needed and for a decent price too. Forget ordering on line - I'll go back to Hanson's for all track and running items. read more

The Hansons must be doing something right. I seem to have problems finding my running shoes at other running shops, but Hansons seems to always have the shoes I'm looking for in stock. It may be true that the staff knows about running, but they lack customer service big time. I was directed to a shelf of running shoes and not given any more attention in the store--even though there was only one other customer and two clerks present. When I asked about running shoes with a lower cushion, I was directed to a different part of the store. No one offered assistance further than that. Basically, I received no help at all, and I would recommend going to Dick's or another franchise store where at least someone will assist you in sizes. This was definitely a let down. read more

This was by far the worst experience I've ever had buying a pair of shoes. Or should I say not buying a pair of shoes. I told the salesman that I didn't like the color of a pair of shoes, and he told me that once color became a factor nothing else matters. He turned his back on me and wouldn't help me any more. If that is the way they treat all of their customers, I can't believe they are still in business. I'll never go back there! read more

Very helpful staff. I walked in to buy a pair of running shoes and told them that I wanted something that supported my arches well. They put me on the machine and informed me that my arches were beginning to fall and we then tried on several pairs of shoes that would be suitable. Overall the staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable and I ended up paying less than I expected for my shoes. Excellent place for service and advice as well as quality equipment. read more

My experience with buying running shoes is usually just buying whatever brand seems popular and I get them in my normal shoe size. However, since I have been running a lot more lately and I plan on doing at least six 5ks this year with the possibility of a 10k, I decided that I should get fitted for some proper running shoes. I went into Handsons today for the first time and the woman who helped me, I think her name was Argenta, was super nice and helpful. She had me walk away from her so she could see how my feet landed and had me stand on this sensor thing to see where I put the most pressure on my feet. She noticed that I tend to roll inward on my left foot so she hooked me up with a guiding shoe. She also said that I should go a half size up so my toes have a bit more room. I am very happy with my experience shopping at this store and I am very glad I went. When it comes time to buy a new pair I will definitely go back. It was nice having someone really trying to help me find something I like and that would work for me and not just trying to make a sale. She was awesome. read more
