I recently came to Hans Im Glück (Lucky Hans, in English) in Switzerland's #1 tourist destination for art, culture, museums and dining: Basel-City. The event was a semi-formal get-together; most of the attendants were professionals and students and we all wanted some feisty, thick, dripping burgers.
Hans Im Glück is an American burger joint in Basel-City, Switzerland!
Hans Im Gluck on Basel's Steinenvorstadt was the best ensemble of relaxed vibes, service, dining, food quality and price/drinks. The collective mood was super vibrant, slightly subdued but with very good background music. Our party had so many different people (and tables) that numerous wait staff members had to help out! Nevertheless, the evening was excellent and moved along on pace.
Each course (first alcoholic drinks, then apps, next main course, etc then desserts) was brought to our table by a team of two very new waitresses. Only once, did one separate 'bar-back' deliver one item that had the wrong side (a marginal mistake) and was speedily returned and brought back.
The 'Mountain Goat' burger (they all had special Swiss-related names like 'sheep', or 'farm boy' etc. 'young maid') I ordered to review for you on Yelp! was a specialty I had eyed for months on the menu. The fat beef patty on brioche was topped by a crumbling of goats cheese and then doused in a fig marmalade that was not sweet but tart. The large burger was plated in the middle, very properly - by the kitchen.
The medium rare temperature was right. As you can imagine: anything goat with fresh figs - will simply melt and coalesce on a hot burger and is heaven mixed with a few drops of fat and fries!
My 'Mountain Goat' burger was able to squelch a mountain man's hunger.
Our meals and main courses were received with unanimous positive consent and our taste buds were spoiled. The almdudler in the picture is a kind of unsweetened, non-alcoholic apple juice.
Most main courses were served with fries (either wedge or Freedom fries) but could be changed for salads or vegetables. A drink, burger, side combo cost about ChF. 20 (~$18).
The extra sauces on all tables are a perk. The mixed drinks were very copious (tall glasses). The plates were served hot to our tables - which is rare these days. Napkins, silverware and tables were pristine.
The inside ambience is, I will say: a modern 'Tarzan & Jane' on superlatives (bamboo shoots next to tables, large glowing orbs and lamps, Christmas decorations and window displays). This is a great group meat-themed joint but also shares in such purposes as, maybe a date spot; or just a pall-around with guys/gals locale!
Great vibes. Fresh, delicious, new main dishes.
Friendly staff!
