I stopped in for the SF First Thurs Art Gallery walk. Went to Hang Art since there was so many people inside. One reason is the art which was interesting. Nobody I recognized, but that's ok. Some guy was pouring free wine & water so people were happy. They were showing David Fullarton "Once Again I Fail To Live Up To My Advance Publicity". I think I read they are moving this location to the Hang Art Annex - 567 Sutter St. - making it one. One unisex bathroom. read more

I was Hang the other night for First Thursdays and was reminded of why I like San Francisco's art scene so much: daring, unpretentious, and social come to mind as quick descriptors. As indicated from my former review, I've been a fan of Hang's artists for years, and it's refreshing to see that, despite having to close one location, the folks that run this place continue to believe in showcasing and promoting local talent. Be careful: After a few glasses of wine, you just might buy something; I did! read more

A few years ago I helped a friend carry some of his small sculptural pieces to Hang Art. He was looking for a gallery to show his work, which I would describe as 3-dimensional graphic compositions. My friend is not a dilettante, but a serious artist who has exhibited in several museums in Seattle, Texas and Mexico City. He has also been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as travel fellowships. The woman who was in charge of the gallery that day was very condescending to my friend. I will never forget her snooty attitude and the looks on her face when she made dismissive comments. She advised him that he should try one of the touristy galleries at Pier 39. I was deeply offended by this woman at Hang Art. My friend, a pro when it comes to dealing with pseudo-hip people in the art world, just took it in stride. When we left this place I was furious but he was calm and explained to me that galleries are very subjective in the way they accept work to exhibit. He told me that one must always remember that meeting with galleries is part of the experience of finding the right fit. Sure enough, he soon had a terrific "break" when his 3-D constructions were selected for display at Saks 5th Avenue on Union Square. It was a gorgeous exhibition of his work, especially at night, when the beautiful pieces were theatrically illuminated. These days my friend has a successful career as an artist, with lovely supportive clients. And he has likely long forgotten his rejection from Hang Art. I have not. read more

This place is an awesome introduction to art. For someone who's never really paid attention to the stuff (what, posters of centerfolds and neon beer signs don't count as art? pishaw! ) this place does a good job of being accessible to regular people. They have a big show the first Thursday of every month, and feature a local artist, who's usually there. There's no pretense, just art, and friendly people there to appreciate it. Best place my fiancee has ever worked! read more

Hang Art - The Hang Art Logo... just so the Annex doesn't feel left out. - Art Galleries Near Me - San Francisco, California

Very nice event space here to compliment the main gallery across the street. Open NYC studio feel and nice use of tracklighting and others to keep pieces visible. My buddy Jeff was part of an event here that highlighted the theme Solitude. As usual Jeff's shit was the talk of the show and i got to have a bit of a college-daze reunion with bunch of mutual friends from UC Santa Cruz (even tho i only went to parties there--another story..) Like every other art show got jiggy on some comp'd wine and snacks- yatta!!! read more

Hang is a great institution and part of the soul of this city. Local artists with world class works at bargain prices. By supporting Hang you support the cultural diversity that makes SF truly unique. The best of the best have had works hanging at Hang. Stop by on Thursday Art Crawl. Check the works by Tim Yankosky, an outstanding artist and human being. I feel blessed to have his works in my collection. I love Hang! read more

I don't usually go to art galleries. I usually find them intimidating and, well, expensive. I went to Hang for the first time at the beginning of September to see the Dave Warnke show. The staff was very friendly, very helpful, and not at all pushy. We were free to take as long as we wanted, with no pressure to buy or do anything other than look. About a week later, I dragged a friend back with me for a second look. Several purchases were made on that trip, and we were assured the pieces would be mailed within a few days after the end of the show. Sure enough, they arrived not too far into October! Lowkey, unpretentious, nice. Art doesn't intimidate me, no sir! read more

I like my art without pretense, attitude, or pushy sales people. Please support local artists. read more

Hang is nice for several reasons. Everyone that works there is friendly and easy to talk to, unlike some of the more pretentious galleries out there. Their new upstairs location is cool, and unique (and right across the street from the old one, so even the most directionally challenged won't get lost). They have a good variety of artists in there. And. Complimentary libations on first Thursdays... read more

The staff here is incredibly nice and welcoming - there are a number of really great artists here, and I love the fact that there are probably 25-30 artists up at any given time, so always something new to see! I've also thrown parties here - dont know if they still do this, but they were great to work with - and the space is wonderful! read more

Great people work here, and you can find great art as well. One of the few downtown galleries that makes a real effort to represent a range of artistic styles. Saw my favorite mixed media artwork here but can't remember the artists name! And how can you not love the new work and free wine on the First Thursday of the month. read more

Great little art space with a really cool arrangement of the art. It's weird. Sometimes a space has really great art but they muck it up by hanging it all weird and not letting you enjoy it. Not this place. The space doesn't feel like a gallery either, which is pretty unique, it kind of reminds me of a cool botique shop that happens to have art in it. The art is a little hit or miss sometimes, but it's all funky local artists that they support and that is never a bad thing. read more

I overheard an artist refer to this place as the Walmart of galleries. I thought that was a succint summation.

Fabulous local artwork is shown here. The gallery is not pretentious and the attendants are not overly pushy. Just meander through and see something new. They won't leave you hanging. read more

This gallery is fantastic because it's relatively affordable, and you have the option to rent the art. The staff is friendly and approachable. I love Marianne Kolbs work, though her recent stuff wasn't really my thing- she got happy or light on me! They have a beautiful cityscape artist- very small pieces and easy to find space anywhere, but great impact for their size. The also had this fantastic artist who did city street scenes- Big ones on studio style canvases. Definitely try visiting on a first Thursday. Have a couple cocktails. Buy a piece and support the arts. read more

Great gallery. Usually see better work here than some of the more high end galleries or even museums. No snooty attitudes here either. I was sorry to see the Hang in Palo Alto close. This is usually one of three galleries in the city I will consistently go to on one of those "go to the city to see art" days. read more

Great local art at reasonable prices! Great people. No pressure...

We had an event here for my last company. A leetle too cramped for a good party, I think, at least for more than maybe 25 or 30 people. There was an awful lot of drunkeness and debauchery, though, and the BF unleashed some dance floor moves that astonished everyone, including me. read more

I was walking back to my hotel after a very long day and out of the corner of my eye I saw Hang Art. As an avid lover of all things art I knew I had to go inside. It was very mellow and relaxing inside the gallery with many pieces of art that I enjoyed immensely. I also liked the music they were playing ;) There were really comfy chairs my friend and I sat in and just took in the place quietly to ourselves. I could have fallen asleep because I was so relaxed. This place reminded me of home and I truly loved it. read more

I just made my first purchase from Hang Art today! I purchased a work by Laine Justice. Really wonderful work - beautiful, thought provoking, with a great sense of depth. OK OK, back to Hang Art. They have some really nice art at accessible prices and their staff is REALLY REALLY GREAT! Thank you Heidi!!! :) They were very patient with me as I took about four days to actually come to a decision on which piece I wanted. They treat you with respect and don't talk down to you at all. I never felt pressured in the least to buy anything or make a decision in a hurry. Overall an A+ experience! read more

Great selection of quality local artists at moderate prices. Friendly staff who are willing to show you more than what is just on the walls on any given day. Second Thursday events are fun and well-attended. I really love the painting I bought here and would definitely shop here again. Space is relaxed and vibrant. read more

I've bought a number of works from Hang Art over the last few years and they've become my go-to gallery in San Francisco. I often find myself stopping into the gallery whenever i'm in Union Sq. just to browse and hang out. It's a great hideaway from the hustle and tourist bustle that is downtown San Francisco. They showcase an array of local Bay Area artists and have a good eye for up and comers in addition to the more established artists. It's a refreshing change from your usual gallery lined up with carbon copies of landscape paintings. I've always had a great experience with the staff and they quickly (from day 1) acquired a feel for my tastes as well as my living space. They've made my early foray into the art collecting world very accessible and unpretentious. Their way of doing business is very personal and warm - artists aren't just names on the wall, but real, accessible people. read more

This place is great. Unpretentious employees, interesting art by mostly local artists. The prices are very reasonable, and you can even rent art work to try it out in your home. I love this place. read more

I have been enjoying Hang Art since about 2000 when they were in Palo Alto. The staff has changed over the years, but old staff stay in contact and new and old alike are like one big family. It's a great joy to watch the artists bloom (and often become famous) and to enjoy a constant flow of new works through their web site and in their gallery, when I'm in town. After I moved east, Piero came to visit me while he was in NYC on business, and helped me move pieces around. That's amazing service and he is fabulous. Such an eye and a wonderful personality. Needless to say, everyone asks me where my art is from. I tell them about Hang and keep hoping they'll open a branch in SoHo! They'd make a fortune out here. A win win for everyone. Thank you Hang Art! read more

Fantastic art, warm staff! Piero is incredibly helpful and just a great guy. Highly recommend!

As a creative person, I often find the gallery community cold and intimidating. Every time I make a trip to Union Square for a hair cut or quick shopping adventure, I always make time to climb the stairs to explore HANG Art's latest show. The HANG team curates a refreshing selection of local artist's work, and the balance of affordability and forward-thinking curation always inspire me. HANG makes you feel like you can walk out your door and become an art collector, any day. The space has great light, and great people - Kay or Piero always remember our last visit and inquire thoughtfully about an artist, or exhibit we just saw. It feels personal, genuine and I love recommending HANG for new friends that just moved to SF and need to fill their walls with work; works they can live with and love for the long(er) view. #BeyondIKEA #grownupart #artwithfeels read more

nice collection. however, when we went to visit today, the woman that helped us showed little interest in us being there. We asked to see a range of paintings and she didn't share a single detail about the artist, tell us more about their style, or ask what we were looking for. Good pieces, but don't expect any warm and fuzzy service, read more

It's a great concept and nice to see local or non-famous work. Not pretentious like some galleries can be.

Buyer beware - deceptive sales practices! I found a large drawing I liked at Hang, but wasn't sure if it would work in my house. I told the sales person Kay this. There are a couple of options - borrow it to see if it worked, buy it or lease it. She told me if I took the lease option I had a 7 day grace period to return it or buy it and have the lease payment fully applied to the purchase. Not sure how long it would take to decide, I went for the lease option and paid $1,700+. The drawing wasn't a good fit and I returned it within 7 days. Kay then told me that the lease payment was not refundable, which was not the verbal agreement. I contacted Piero, the manager, and he basically told me "tough luck - read the fine print on the back of the lease agreement". I'm now out $1,700+ and am pursuing other remedies. I've dealt with many galleries in the past and this is absolutely the worst experience I've had in misleading and dishonest sales practices. As I said, buyer beware! read more

If I could give no stars I would. They seem like a vanity gallery in that it appears those that work there show there. They have some decent art but their approach seems to be totally about commercializing the work. read more
