Think of it as 'art' that lives in your yard. But that's about all I had figured out. Luckily, the folks at Bates took care of the rest. First things first, the place is large. It's not overwhelmingly so (so, not Opryland) but it's big enough that if you don't know what you're doing or what you're looking for, you're going to be the Sims character who just spins. Not being shy about my lack of clues, I walked up to the desk and said what I was trying to do/buy and I didn't know what else to do after that. After being complimented about my thoughtfulness, I was tag-teamed: I was given directions to find a specific person to talk to about flowers and another about shrubbery. Given that you will actually be walking through distinct areas/zones, I was given landmarks to note. I appreciated all of this. I was a fish out of water and every instruction was a sign of kindness. I found my first contact (who had been given a heads up by walkie talkie) and she was awesome. She was so awesome that I just went all in with flowers and forgot the shrubs. She explained zones, planting times, soil, perennials vs annuals, etc. I took notes (seriously). And then she started walking me through the selection. Bates.Has.Everything. They do. Don't ask. Just trust. And a side effect of having everything is fair pricing. They have everything and they have a lot of it so you aren't on the hook to spend a lot due to scarcity. I left the nursery with a bit of an education, plants that mean something to the recipients and continue to adorn yards, money in my pocket for other gifts, and a good feeling from shopping local and supporting a business that's been around for almost 100 years. There are so many cool businesses to discover on Yelp outside of food and drink. Dig in, explore and patronize what makes your metro unique.

We were craving sweets after dining on some street tacos so decided to stop in to this Ollie's location. It appers to inhabit half of a former grocery store complex. Parking is ample, the crowd was slight (perhaps due to it being lunch hour.) The aisles are wide, stock was straight and the shelves were full of all manner of bargin-bin greatness. We've stopped into other Ollie's locations before and this one is the best, clean, stocked, ready to shop.

Honestly, I think 50% of the inventory is doors of some variety, and I wasn't mad it! It is such a cool space to wander around for a bit. We stopped by looking for antique furniture and while they have a few pieces, that is not what this place is about. Even though we didn't find what we were after, it was cool to wander up and down the hallways and through the maze of rooms scoping out the goods...we really loved some of the windows and lights they have hanging around. Some absolutely beautiful, and pricey, finds that I could see absolutely making a space! The staff was pleasant and friendly, she greeted us when we were walking around and again as we were leaving. When we arrived at the store, she had gift-wrapped the Jellycats for my daughter and her friend, and even added a cute pink helium balloon to make it extra fun. She had asked me her fav color the day before we arrived- talk about going above and beyond to help us with the surprise! Such a thoughtful touch and a really beautiful shop. Mackenzie was working the day we came in, and she was just the sweetest! I highly recommend supporting this small business and we will certainly be back next time we're in town.
