Had a nice wine tasting experience here. It could've been better. Arrived and there was a female server which told us a bit about the wines and the area. Let us taste several wines without paying a fee which was nice. Server was a bit too serious and was pushy at times as if was rushing us. I liked the tasting room but was really quiet inside. Maybe some soft music would've made it nicer especially since it's so beautiful outside and we all could see out. Later I bought some wine and had it shipped to me. We almost didn't stop here but they are open the latest for tasting on Highway 128 and apparently we just had to try one more before driving back to Mendocino for the evening. I am so glad we stopped! The wines are all very tasty and it was hard to choose which to buy, since we'd spent a whole day tasting and buying. Their Pinot Noir Rose and Malbec Rose were both amazing: crisp, slightly sweet without all that syrupy quality a lot of roses fall victim to. The Riesling was also delicious and fruity with subtle hints of honey. We ended up walking out with the most bottles of anywhere we tasted, including one of the estate Pinot Noirs for the hubby, his favorite of the day. I highly recommend tasting at Handley and finding this buried treasure of the north. read more

A fantastic winery focused primarily on Alsatian varieties and Pinot Noir, although they still have some Chard and Sauvignon Blanc. Tasting staff was very nice. The room itself is maybe a touch too folk/ethnic artsy for me, but that has little to do with the wine. The winemakers here seem to really focus on the nose, as every wine across the board had this beautiful, tight, and clean scent - particularly the Pinot Gris and Riesling. Both of these would have tricked me into thinking they were Alsatian had the taste not hinted at California. I didn't like any of their Dry Creek wines, but their Pinot Noir was fantastic. We have been visiting Napa and Sonoma wine areas for over 30 years. This was our first time in the gorgeous Anderson valley along beautiful winding Hwy 128. After a one night stay in Mendocino, it took us just one hour to arrive at Handley. Our host Chris was absolutely the best! He was so friendly, down to earth, fun and easy to talk to. There is no fee for the tasting, and we tasted so many outstanding wines. We bought two bottles of their Sauvignon Blanc and one of their award winning Pinot Noir. We were shocked when we left and realized we had spent over 90 minutes there. It was so fun! They don't sell their wine in stores so we will have to return to get more! And the grounds are gorgeous - would be fun to stay and have a picnic too. Highly recommend this fantastic winery and Chris! read more

This was the first place we stopped in Anderson Valley, so it really set the highest of standards for every other vineyard we visited on a recent trip back from Fort Bragg, CA. We were there over the 4th of July holiday and the place was so quiet and empty, I think we had it to ourselves most of the time. The wines were all superb, free to taste, and the staff knowledgable, friendly, and full of great information and stories. The tasting room and the grounds were both kid and dog friendly, so it was a pleasant stay for the whole family. read more

My top pick in Anderson Valley wineries - both for the wine and the tasting room ambience, tours, and picnic deck. There are hardly any certified organic vineyards or wineries in Anderson Valley - and that is one thing I like very much about Handley Cellars - all of their estate wines are made from CCOF certified grapes. Secondly, Milla Handley is such an authentic person - and Handley reflects her values which she is passing along to her daughter. Their wines are superb and have been awarded so many significant accolades. The staff is courteous and knowledgeable. I love their deck - it's the perfect perch to enjoy a picnic. I also recommend calling ahead to get their tour. If you're going to Anderson Valley, this would be my top pick for a place to visit. read more

Good winery in a line of good wineries on highway 128. The staff was super friendly and seem to want nothing more than to have you taste as much free wine as you could. Beautiful area as well, they have cool little patio area where you can see all the rows of grapes and the forest in the back round. Coming up here and driving along the cost was defiantly a fun trip. read more

The first stop on our wine adventure and certainly has kept a lasting impression. The tastings were delightful and came full with the education. The winemaker, Randy, was kind enough to show us the ropes and talk vintification - great guy with an awesome out look on winemaking and the end product. Recommend this to everyone! Our favorites? Was just there on 6/11 as our last stop of the day as most of the other wineries close at 5pm whereas Handley is open till 6. Our host Chris was amazing. He provided a great experience for our group of 4 and didn't rush the process at all even after closing time had come and gone. The outside patio was beautiful. Really liked the atmosphere and would interested to see the place lit up when the sun goes down. Looking forward to getting back up here from San Francisco next time we can. read more

Handley was the last winery we stopped at for our wine tasting day in Anderson Valley, and it was the highlight of our trip! Steven was such a great host - he is very friendly and knowledgeable about wine. The wines at Handley are delicious, especially if you like heavier red wines. Apparently everything is organic. They have a lovely courtyard and really cool art inside as well. And the wine tasting is free! Definitely make sure you stop by Handley!! read more

We fell upon this winery and flipped a u-turn because it looked so inviting. So glad we did!! Wonderful service, pretty view and delicious Pintos! walked a way with a few bottles which we are excited to enjoy with family over the holidays! This place has one the most beautiful views overlooking the vines. The courtyard is so lovely and it is the only place they would allow our dogs, not in the tasting room...which is their prerogative but after having gone to Navarro and Toulouse, this place seemed a bit stuffy. The lady at the counter was very nice, reminding me why I prefer this area to the Napa wineries. We tasted most of the whites and nothing really jumped out at me, but I loved the Syrah and the Pinot Noir and came away with a bottle of each. Overall a nice place that maybe better suited to an older crowd. read more

It's too bad since the wines were good and the setting is beautiful, but she did not seem interested in us or even being there. At first I thought it was because it was the end of the season (we were there last week), but it appears she should be behind the scenes and not interacting with the public. There weren't any snacks when we were there, just the usual wine crackers. And I actually had to go to the other bar to get those because our server didn't offer us anything. My wife, mother-in-law and I visited several wineries in Anderson Valley, but none of the others had Ali (I hope I'm spelling that right) pouring wine. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic, she made the tasting experience special for us. The wines were fabulous and the views outstanding. We lucked out and were there on a food and wine pairing day -- wonderful hors d'oeuvres that paired nicely with their wines. I hope we get back there next year. read more

This winery is such a hidden gem. I would not have known about it if it were not for friends who are club members. If you are lucky, you will get to meet Chris, the tasting room manager. Such a great passion for wine, and knowledgeable. I went to several other wineries in the Anderson Valley and found this to be the top of my list. While others are charming as well, Handley had the best balance between quality and value. They make lovely Chardonnay but I think Pinot Noir is their specialty. Nice tasting room and tasteful grounds. They Pinots ranging from full to light bodied. My husband loved the full bodied Pinot from Alexander Valley, 2008. He thought the Zinfindel was unique, infused with cherry, chocolate and tobacco flavors. Free tastings, knowledgeable staff and reasonably priced wines. read more

This is a wonderful tasting room! the wine is terrific, but not only that, they have a great "folk art" gallery, with all kinds of work from around the world as well as from some local artists. Based on some of the other reviews on Yelp, we decided to start our tour of Anderson Valley here, and it was the way to go. This is a wonderful winery, and Chris was the best! We had a lovely time tasting the wines, and Chris had my tastes pegged. The RSM Vineyard Pinot Noir is a killer wine - the best I have tasted in a long time. We also received some good recommendations, which nicely rounded out the rest of our day. This is THE winery to visit in this area! read more

Steven was my host on Thursday 6/23/2016. I appreciated his knowledge of the wine. He explained Handley's organic farming practices to me. We even had a tour of the vineyards and the cellar itself. The tasting was complimentary, which is a welcome relief in the face of much higher fees at other places in Wine Country. I truly enjoyed their 2014 Pinot Blanc. Currently it is one of the best white wines from California. I picked up a bottle. The 2013 Brightlighter White was good as well. It is a great wine for retreating from a hot summer day, another bottle that ended up in my cooler. I enjoyed all of their Pinot Nor offerings. The two that stood out the most to me were the 2013 Helluva Vineyard and 2013 RSM Vineyard, so I bought one of each. Their Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon offerings were ok, but not particularly impressive. They're masters of the Pinot and should stick to it. Overall I felt that their wine was excellent and it was worth joining their club. This is one of those few places where a membership has value. I can't find these wines at stores near me, so they have exclusive appeal, and their reasonable prices mean that Handley is one of the few wineries where you get a better deal by doing business directly with them. This place is the epitome of a boutique winery. I wish all place were like them. read more

Spent the weekend visiting many Anderson Valley wineries and we all agreed this was the standout. First, the grounds and building are done very well. Not overdone, not sparse, but for me, just perfect, balanced and very comfortable. You can tell who ever laid out the entire facility knew what they were doing, very professional. On to the wine, this place had more hits than any other. When the palates line up, great things happen. Chris was wonderful to visit with, even though he had been working the vineyards since before sunrise and my other half threatened bodily harm if he took away the Gewurztraminer. We got through it! We bought many bottles at many of other wineries, but you know you pass the acid test when you get home and this Pinot was the first one we opened for dinner. Highly recommend. read more

This is one of the nicest tasting rooms, larger than others, and very knowledgeable staff-- Steven was very informative and helpful and nice to talk with being from the Bay Area and having experience in Napa and Anderson Valley. This place has great wine and has a fun environment! We stopped here this past weekend to taste their delicious wines and had a fabulous time! Gail poured for us and oh my goodness is she WONDERFUL!!! She was so sweet as was everyone else working there. Gail was fascinated that our group was into cooking and discussed many menu ideas with us (they give free menu cards for dishes that go well with their wines!). I dont have too much to say in the way of good or bad for this place. Reading other reviews i saw that Chris was a common host and we didnt have him, we instead had an older woman who was much quieter and not as warm. However, she was very knowledgeable and certainly not rude but i feel the experience certainly would have been enhanced with someone a bit more talkative. Other than that, the wines were very good. The Syrah was smooth and the chard we tasted was nice and light. read more
