Those wines!!!! Daaaaayum!!! I mean... I can't even decide on a favorite at this point. Every wine that I tried just kept getting better and better and I soon realized that they were all just delicious. Came here during a wine tasting event and left with 3 bottles of wine. And this was only the second winery that I had been to during the event. I usually try not to purchase too heavily at the beginning of a wine event because I tend to find great wines at the last wineries that I visit. But woo wee, I struck gold here and couldn't leave without some wine. Rivino is a family owned boutique winery that's nestled in the hillside of Ukiah. This is not typically where I go wine tasting, but this wonderful wine tasting event exposed me to what I've been missing on this side of town. Their grounds are extremely charming! Their estate overlooks their beautiful ranch and vineyards and also features an entertainment space where they throw events and have live music from time to time. Winemaker Jason McConnell was there at the event pouring wines and mingling with guests and staff. He is definitely a character and has so many entertaining stories. You can tell that he really enjoys producing his wine and he is super confident about it too. But he has a right to be because wow is that wine delicious! Not only did he pour us their special event wines, but he also hooked us up with tastes of several of his personal faves. He even asked me what my favorite wines were and had me taste a few wines that he knew would satisfy my palate. What's amazing is that they have great whites AND reds. Usually I've found that one is better than the other, but they are both superb here. Oh yeah, and they're Blanc de Blanc Sparkling is also delicious! Their white wines are top notch. I was extremely impressed with their Pinot Blanc, Estate Chardonnay, and Viognier. Pinot Blanc is usually hard for me to find unless i'm in or near this area (Mendocino/Anderson Valley), so I knew I was going home with a bottle of it right after the first sip. Their estate Chardonnay is so crisp, citrusy, and tropical. I had to have it. So amazing. And their reds! To die for. Loved their estate Sedulous Red Blend and their yummy Cab Franc, but ultimately fell in love with their bright and fruity Tiger Juice red blend. So joyfully fruity and jammy. It also came home with me. Yeah, their wines are definitely fine with me. The only reason why I'm rating 4 stars instead of 5 is because a few of the staff members had attitudes and some of the exchanges between these ladies and the winemaker were kind of weird and at times... uncomfortable. Not really sure what's going on there but take what you want from that information. But even with that, it didn't ruin the fun time that I had here. The wine is superb and I can see why they have so many great accolades in the area. read more

A Family owned and run boutique winery thats making a niche for itself in the Mendocino wine country. This small local vintner has been true to the craft for many years here, building a loyal clientele the whole time and they have been at it so long that the highway exit even bears their name now. I remember when it did not. The location is amazing, the vibe very chill, outside areas to sit in the shade and sip the different varietals available whenever you should choose to visit. My most recent stop with a friend was exactly that, a loyal customer stopping by while in the immediate area to pick up his wifes favorite wine. We've been visiting here for years and things have always been great...not so much this year...the lady in the tasting room was so rude...she made us come back in and request the next pour...in the past, Jason sat with us and chatted about the wines...when we wanted to order, she told us to visit the website and place our order online...worst tasting room experience ever...she could not even tell us who the winemaker was...she was just a warm body to man the tasting room...I think her mom was working with her and she was more personable, even though she knew nothing about the wines...this place has really dropped off since Jason left, anytime my husband asked a question, she just told him her first name again...we even asked for Suzanne to follow up with us and she could give a rats xxx... With something like 200 acres of grapes to choose from on their sprawling Schrader Ranch estate bordering the Russian River just south of Ukiah, the proprietors at Rivino can afford to be picky about what styles of wine they bottle under their own, artistically styled label. Like many Mendocino growers, Rivino sells up to 90% of their annual grape harvest to outside wineries, allowing themselves to select prime fruit for their personal wine making, often from special blocks and parcels planted to interesting varietals, like Pinot Blanc, Sangiovese, and Viognier. These can be made into creative blends and barrel aged as desired, or vinified into sweet, pink, or sparkling wines for more immediate enjoyment. Having lots of pretty land to look at also opens up the possibility of creating outdoor patio spaces and semi enclosed decks for guests to sample wines, listen to live music, or simply soak up the sun on a quiet summertime or early fall day. It is easy to enjoy yourself here, even without the wealth of wines to try. I especially liked the estate Sangiovese and Chardonnay, which were excellent expressions of these crowd pleasing varietals that are so beloved in their native French and Italian homelands and that have found such ideal conditions to thrive in the upper Russian River Valley. Given the sunny location, the Rivino versions are rich in fruit with floral elements, with the Chardonnay being done in stainless steel rather than oak to preserve its freshness and vibrant acidity, while the Sangiovese gets extended time aging in barrels to balance the fullness of flavor and impart nut and woodsy notes perfect for pairing with grilled, smoked, or braised meats and game. The other of our favorite wines from a recent late September tasting was the simply delicious Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine made from the usual combination of Chardonnay, Viognier, and Pinot Blanc, giving it a unique fruit forward profile with notes of hazelnut, pistachio, and freshly baked bread. The original ranch property grew mainly pears, and this characterizes the Estate Chardonnay especially, while red varietals like Cabernet Franc have lots of dark berry and plum that are suited for bottling as a single varietal rather than in a conventional Bordeaux style blend. Tastings, refundable with one bottle purchase, are casual and fun with lots of room to relax and spread out, especially on Wine Wednesdays when music is being played and food is available for purchase. A cute boutique winery with a menu that everyone can enjoy. The tiger juice name for one of the wines is odd, but I'm sure there is something behind the name at the end of the day. The sparkling blanc de blancs is superb, crisp, and refreshing. Also, the sanjo aka the Sangiovese was quite good as well and I like how the hostess pointed out the vineyard of Sangiovese, which was a nice gesture. Planned a quick little getaway for Memorial Day weekend, and decided to stay in Ukiah, despite not knowing anything of it aside from the fact that it was the only place we could find a room anywhere near Fort Bragg on short notice. After polling Facebook and getting some relatively unhelpful, slightly perverse, but fairly amusing recommendations about what there was to do in town from friends, I turned to Yelp instead. The reviews of Rivino were enough to convince me that it would be our first stop of the trip, and the winery did not disappoint. First impression: "Holy smokes. This place is gorgeous." The view. Just. Wow. There were half a dozen or so tables overlooking the vineyard, along with a firepit, and a couple cozy nooks to settle into. Highlights: Jason: The winemaker and owner (along with his wife, who we didn't have the pleasure of meeting). Rockstar. He was super friendly and knowledgeable about his wines, and gave us great recommendations on places to eat in town, none of which steered us wrong (food-wise, anyhow). The view: It's worth mentioning again because it's stunning. I found myself repeatedly drifting off into daydreams about building a little raised bed garden by the tasting area, planting it with vegetables, and having amazing little, homegrown meals throughout the summer, and then I'd come to and remember I didn't live there. Fortunately for me, I was tasting wine and that helped me cope. The wine: Last but not least, right? Right. We tasted 2 whites (Chardonnay and Viognier) and 4 reds (Sangiovese, 2 Sedulous blends, and a Cab Franc). I was especially taken by the Viognier, Sangiovese, and the 2009 Sedulous, while my boyfriend, who steers clear of whites in general (though he really enjoyed the Viognier), loved the Sangiovese, the 2008 Seulous, and the Cab. In the end, because we liked them all, we went home with a bottle of each, AND we joined their wine club - that's how enamored we were. Overall, the entire experience made such an impression on us both that we've now added Rivino and Ukiah itself to the list of places in our rotation, and we're already trying to plan when we'll have some time to get back to visit again. read more

My bf and I stopped here on our way back to San Francisco after a 3day weekend in Humboldt. What attracted me to it was the beautiful view of their vineyard and the valley from their porch. It's such a lovely setting; exactly how you would imagine a humble Northern California vineyard. Their wines were very good, especially their white wines. Even my bf, who doesn't care much for white ones, was surprised by how much he liked their Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. Their Viognier and Sedulous were the ones that impressed us the most. They were both bold, unique and fantastic. I was looking for something different from the Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon that I was used to. I'm glad we got bottles of these unique wines. We're looking forward to share them with our friends. Rivino is worth a stop if you're driving through Mendocino county. It has such a relaxing vibe. Beautiful views! I've visited this place twice - once in the winter and the summer. In the winter, you can overlook the vineyards next to cozy heaters. The summer is the best because you can lounge outside in their picnic area and sip through 8 rounds of tasting (8 wines in the tasting for $7). The staff will come around to pour you a glass/sip as you chat. My favorite wine was probably the Viognier. I also loved the last wine of the tasting, called Tiger Juice because they had a sick label. It's one of the most gorg vineyard views overlooking the Sonoma area. Best part? The atmosphere doesn't feel like a pretentious wine snob place. read more

Usually I really enjoy rivino, but their mother's day brunch was horrible. They advertised a three course brunch, and gave us a quarter teaspoon of caviar on potato chips, one salmon bite on a cracker and cold runny eggs Benedict. All for $40/plate. Rivino, few weeks ago I went to one of their Friday events and had a bottle of wine and some of the food they are now selling. Now, their wine is not the best, but I went there for the atmosphere. So, I purchased a bottle of Rosé and I bought some food and had a good time. I came home and checked they overcharged me $15. Long story short, the amount was credited back into my account after I emailed them, but didn't even get an apology. I am posting this again. Why? The owner had the audacity to call me directly and harass me to remove the comment from Yelp. This is the type of person linked to our current government, who believes has the power to replace a historical name with their name on a city exit. Rivino is magical. I am hesitant to write this review in knowing that other people will learn about the secret beauty of Rivino. After driving for a few hours back to the Bay Area, my friend and I decided to stop by. WINE TASTING: $7 for a tasting of 8 wines we tried that day. Both of us bought a bottle (and the tasting fee is waived). I don't think we had a bad wine, but we both loved the Sangiovese most. I read a previous post about how the pouring is not a lot, but honestly, for that many wines, I was OK with a smaller pour. PLUS, you can always revisit the ones you liked a lot! SERVICE: We met Suzanne, an owner of the winery, and she was so pleasant to talk to and knowledgeable about the wines. She definitely added so much to the experience of wine tasting. On the way back from Ukiah to Hopland we stopped in at Rivino. We were in luck. Jason, the winemaker and owner, was between chores during harvest. It was a beautiful day to taste wine on the patio with him. He took time to discuss his wines and farming philosophy with us as we tasted his wines and admired the view from the patio. Had a good time. We liked his Chardonnay. Jason keeps the oak to a minimum so the wine was crisp but not buttery. Bought a bottle of it before we left. read more
