We were on a roadtrip and has just emerged from the woods after seeing the oldgrowth redwoods in Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve. Hello Rivino! Terrific experience, terrific wines. Just what we needed! The chartuterie was a tasty complement. The experience was made even more memorable by Andrew. So knowledgeable, kind and attentive. Giving the wine club consideration...

This place is magical!!! The live music, gourmet food truck, delicious wine & amazing views are some of the reasons why you should visit Rivino! Perfect place to unwind on a Friday night! Atmosphere is spectacular overlooking the views of the vineyard property. Staff are so warm and inviting, our family is a good friend of Jason (wine master) and he was so hospitable! Thank you!!!

With something like 200 acres of grapes to choose from on their sprawling Schrader Ranch estate bordering the Russian River just south of Ukiah, the proprietors at Rivino can afford to be picky about what styles of wine they bottle under their own, artistically styled label. Like many Mendocino growers, Rivino sells up to 90% of their annual grape harvest to outside wineries, allowing themselves to select prime fruit for their personal wine making, often from special blocks and parcels planted to interesting varietals, like Pinot Blanc, Sangiovese, and Viognier. These can be made into creative blends and barrel aged as desired, or vinified into sweet, pink, or sparkling wines for more immediate enjoyment. Having lots of pretty land to look at also opens up the possibility of creating outdoor patio spaces and semi enclosed decks for guests to sample wines, listen to live music, or simply soak up the sun on a quiet summertime or early fall day. It is easy to enjoy yourself here, even without the wealth of wines to try. I especially liked the estate Sangiovese and Chardonnay, which were excellent expressions of these crowd pleasing varietals that are so beloved in their native French and Italian homelands and that have found such ideal conditions to thrive in the upper Russian River Valley. Given the sunny location, the Rivino versions are rich in fruit with floral elements, with the Chardonnay being done in stainless steel rather than oak to preserve its freshness and vibrant acidity, while the Sangiovese gets extended time aging in barrels to balance the fullness of flavor and impart nut and woodsy notes perfect for pairing with grilled, smoked, or braised meats and game. The other of our favorite wines from a recent late September tasting was the simply delicious Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine made from the usual combination of Chardonnay, Viognier, and Pinot Blanc, giving it a unique fruit forward profile with notes of hazelnut, pistachio, and freshly baked bread. The original ranch property grew mainly pears, and this characterizes the Estate Chardonnay especially, while red varietals like Cabernet Franc have lots of dark berry and plum that are suited for bottling as a single varietal rather than in a conventional Bordeaux style blend. Tastings, refundable with one bottle purchase, are casual and fun with lots of room to relax and spread out, especially on Wine Wednesdays when music is being played and food is available for purchase. Check out the events page and club options if you are able to visit the area often!

A cute boutique winery with a menu that everyone can enjoy. The tiger juice name for one of the wines is odd, but I'm sure there is something behind the name at the end of the day. The sparkling blanc de blancs is superb, crisp, and refreshing. Also, the sanjo aka the Sangiovese was quite good as well and I like how the hostess pointed out the vineyard of Sangiovese, which was a nice gesture. It was really nice to get out and enjoy some music.

Blue Luke and the Beyond- amazing band!

What an amazing and beautiful time at Rivino Winery in MendoLand! Family time enjoying the awesome sound of Blue Luke and the Beyond, loving the amazing area we call home; it doesn't get much better friends! Jason thank you so much for the amazing venue and great music!

The energy was very much "hospitality from a bygone era," and not in the quaint, charming way, more like the dusty, uncomfortable chapter no one should be proud of. While certain customers were treated like visiting dignitaries, I was met with the kind of selective service that made me wonder if I missed a sign on the door explaining what unspoken criteria you have to meet to get acknowledged. It's almost impressive how obviously the staff following the tone set by Tyler and Chris Nelson can divide the room without saying a single word. And the wine? Let's just say if you're going to run your service like it's stuck in a different century, at least make the wine good enough to distract people. Instead, the wines taste as tired as the attitude, flat, uninspired, and definitely not worth the emotional archaeology required to survive the vibe here. Meanwhile, others were getting the deluxe treatment while I stood around wondering if I needed to dust myself off to prove I wasn't part of the furniture. The whole experience felt like an unintentional social experiment in favoritism. Do yourself a favor and skip the time-travel tour. Dancing Crow down the road exists firmly in the present day, friendly staff, actual hospitality, and wine that tastes like it was made in this century, not the last three. Nelson Family Vineyards? If you like outdated attitudes and underwhelming wine, sure. Otherwise, keep driving.

The tasting room itself is stunning, with soaring 40-foot ceilings arching over a central fountain--worth a visit just for the architecture. When we arrived the lone worker was obviously busy and we were disturbing her. When I said I wanted to do a wine tasting she quickly set up the glasses, quickly put the small amounts of wine in each glass, handed me a list of the wines and walked away. No information, no history of the company, no tales of the land (and isn't that why we visit these places?). About 3 tastes in she asked "how is that?" That was it. I told my husband, even before I'd tasted them all, that there was no way I'd buy any of this wine, no matter how good it was, because the service was dismal. Though the grounds and building are beautiful I was so disappointed. I do not think we will stop here again. We love to go to tasting rooms and get educated and always come away having learned something as well as having a lovely time. Not so at Barra. The service certainly needs work.

Testa was recommended to me by one of the wonderful servers at Patrona in Ukiah. She told me that I had to come here for a tasting before I left the area, and I did. And damn, am I happy that I did! This was my favorite tasting experience while out in the Ukiah area. What I loved about the tasting room here is that it's quaint, intimate, and super relaxing. No big crowds that you have to push through to make your way to the tasting room. It's quiet, peaceful, and the views are just astounding. And it's doesn't hurt that their estate is so damn adorable! The entire setup is truly darling! There's a beautiful covered deck with the most comfortable sofas! It reveals the most majestic views of their pond, garden, and vineyards. They have several shaded picnic tables and a rocking chair. You can walk around the premises and get lost in all of the beauty that surrounds it. I was literally falling asleep on the couch while I sat out on the deck and tasted. Yep, that's how comfortable I was! Their wines are very tasty as well! They make a variety of whites and reds and have won many awards for their delicious creations. They have their award-winning wines and ribbons posted on the wall of their indoor tasting area. A tasting consists of 5 of their wines. I'm not sure what the cost is for a tasting, but the tasting fee is waived with the purchase of a bottle and their prices are really reasonable. I really enjoyed their "Black" red blend the most and ended up purchasing a bottle to take home. A fun fact about this wine: it was created by their own members at a winemaker's party that they had at the winery. I couldn't believe that the members actually put together such a good blend, but it's amazing! You can fish in the pond for free if you're member! Another interesting fact is that they only use 10% of the wine that they produce. The other 90% is outsourced to other wineries! Now, that's how you KNOW that it's good! Saving the best for last of course. The main reason why I enjoyed tasting here so much was because of JENN!!! That lady is friggin' AMAZE BALLS, mmkay? So much personality and knowledge packed inside of that little body of hers! I honestly felt like I was hanging out with an old friend from high school. Her passion for wine is so undeniable. People like her are so rare to find these days. She is perfect at what she does and Testa is so lucky to have her there. I hope she stays at Testa for many years to come because I want her to be there when I come back again. Whew! I did it again! I done wrote up another novel, y'all! I can't help but to gloat about the places that I love. Well... if you're actually still reading this, then pleeeeeaase make your way out to Testa! I promise you won't regret it!
