Depending upon the flavor you order, you'll find it LOADED with chocolate chunks, or nuts, or other ingredients. The portion sizes are generous! There are lots of flavors to choose from, and our family favorites include Chocolate Pecan, Graham Central Station, Red Skies at Night, Spouse Like a House, Grape, Coffee Chocolate Chip, and more! The are like thirty flavors of ice cream, with a few more that enter the rotation. The locations are open year round, and it isn't unusual to see lines of people in the summer, and a few hardy souls will come out even in the coldest winter days to get their "fix" of Handel's ice cream. There are lots of locations in the Mahoning Valley, where the company was founded, and now Handel's has branched out with franchise locations in Pennsylvania, Texas, and even California! I can't Handel how good this stuff is. It's hard for me to get a Handel on just how good it is. It's like when I'm riding a bike, with a beautiful girl on my Handel-bars. Or a boy. Especially a boy. Oh crap I need to stop admitting that out loud. It's like listening to Tschaikovsky, or the "Messiah" by Handels. I want to drive you to Ohio and buy this for you but my Handels are tied. But if you need to know which flavour to get, hopefully this review will lend you a Handel. What to get: Chocolate Malt w/Caramel (ice cream flavour or shake), Lemonade in summer How to improve: Slightly lower prices, and a more promotion of that particular flavour which is the best thing on the menu The original Handels is up in Austintown, a NW burb of Youngstown. This location is nearly as good, if a little smaller, in the SE burbs of the same city - the city where Handels - now a popular multi-state chain - was born. Most chains taste generic and crappy, even for ice cream (cough Cold Stone, cough Dairy Queen), but Handel's has never lost what makes it special. Wonderful homemade flavours and attention to detail. It's perfect. I definitely have my favourite, and it's the heavenly "Chocolate Malt W/Caramel" flavour, which can be served as either the best ice cream, or best shake, you may ever have. Certainly the best I've ever had from a chain restaurant, although Cook Out's Fresh Banana shake might protest. You also should try the excellent homemade lemonade in the summer (not available when it's cold), and anything else that takes your fancy (such as me). With its recognizable blue-and-white colours and an enormous number of chain locations now throughout the country, especially in OH and PA, its really cool to visit this, a location in the city that started it all, with the wonderful tastes and dreamy creamy products. Youngstown is an often-forgotten part of the world, but it will always be the home to Handel's - the best ice cream and milkshake chain in the country. When I'm famous, I will still get products from here, but I won't come and buy them myself... I'll have my Handel-ers come here and buy them for me. read more

Handel's is still BEST ICE CREAM EVER, however It's time to admit Chocolate Pecan is NOT the only flavor. My favorite is Graham Central Station. Actually I've become disappointed with Chocolate Pecan. In the past few years it has become darker in color in a strange way and there are fewer and fewer pecans in a quart. read more

I stopped here because it was highly rated on Yelp and because it was right next door to Aladdin's which we had just had dinner at. We were staying in Youngstown OH because a snowstorm stranded us on the way back home. My wife and son got frozen yogurt. I tried my wife's chocolate with chocolate sprinkles, which was good (in the same way as that Seinfeld episode where they discover that the frozen yogurt place turns out to be service high fat ultra-good ice cream, which tastes much better than it should). I got the peppermint crunch, which was good, even through I hate peppermint (I asked the girl at the window to give me whatever her favorite was... of course, she didn't know I hate peppermint) and not too pepperminty; more vanilla-y. It's hard to classify icecream stands, but I would consider this a 3 or 4-star place (not for ambiance or service, because it's a walk-up stand, but for the quality of the ice cream). read more

Handel's Ice Cream is a Youngstown classic! This ice cream is hands down the best ever. The menu is HUGE with options for everyone. Every single thing I've tried here is absolutely amazing. Some of my favorite ice cream flavors are Midnight Madness, Spouse Like A House, New York Cheesecake, Peanut Butter Parfait, Cotton Candy, Oree-Dough, Butter Pecan, Red Skies at Night, and Chocolate Malt with Caramel. All of the sherbet flavors are wonderful as well, but my favorites would have to be Pink Champagne and Raspberry. Handel's also makes Hurricanes, which are essentially thick milkshakes, and they are the absolute best! The Boardman location is wonderful and one of my two favorite locations, along with the Canfield one. If you've never tried Handel's, you absolutely MUST! Also, found it to be very reasonable coming from the east coast as 5 waffle cones would have been $30+ and it was only about $20. Everyone here loves it and when you move away you miss it terribly. When I lived in Columbus, I often dreamt of going to get some Handel's ice cream. People actually have it shipped (with dry ice) all over the world. Is it because it is good, yes. Is is because is it part nostalgia and part sweet, yes to both. Even if you are not from here, are just stopping through, or if you have original roots here and are just visiting- you have to try it. Don't try it for the hype. Nothing ever lives up to the hype. Try this for the history. Youngstown was a steel town. When the mills shut down over 30 years ago the people became depressed. Their booming town started to wilt. They could barely drag themselves out of the funk. This is where the ice cream comes in. It was easier to take a trip to Handels than to take a trip to the Bahamas when you are trying to feed a family of 4 on little to no wages. So, it became something fun to do. The ice cream melted really fast. Out of the four flavors I order, I liked Red in the Night and Heavenly Hash. The Key Lime tasted alright. Stopped in there after dinner while in town and found it to be a pleasurable place. It's clean, the people are nice, and it's decently priced for the quality. Menu is a bit large for my preference (there was over 50 flavors by my count), but that could be a good thing if you like options. I've had better ice cream though, so I'd rather them maybe make a few less flavors and focus on getting what they have to all be top notch. I'd go there again if I were in town. Word of warning though, they're a bit generous with the portion size, so keep that in mind. read more

He gets the Buckeye most of the time but the last time I got the Spouse as Big as a House and he got the sea salt caramel. But I gotta say I tried a bite of the sea salt and it was to die for. My family is made up of bunch of Youngstown natives that have dispersed all over the country. We all make sure to go to Handel's AT LEAST once every time that we are in town. Lots of unique flavors (grape!) and tasty flavors with a lot of chunks mixed in (ie: buckeyes, yum). Unfortunately it seemed this time when we went, the ice cream was slightly less creamy and the ice cream wasn't as loaded with pecans (or cherries, or whatever your preference is) as it usually is. This place is usually hopping in summmer. Have great homemade ice cream on cup or sweet cone and cardboard dish. Have about 40 regular flavors and about 8 or so featured l flavors. If you like a seasonal flavor, rwcommend stocking up with pints cuz you might not see it again. I never found any peanut butter or dark chocolate flavor I didn't like. They also sell Handle coins good for a one scoop cone (no expiration) and gift certificates. read more

ATTENTION SCOOPABLE SOFT SERVE! I would not consider Handel's Homemade Ice Cream, ice cream... as the opener states, it is in-fact, scoopable soft serve. If you're looking for ice cream that isn't half-melted within the first five minutes of consumption, I suggest getting "ice cream" elsewhere. I understand it's easier to scoop at a higher freezer temperature when you have a line of customers, but if they improved the design of the scooper, and didn't make the freezers so deep, the girls wouldn't struggle so hard to serve the product. read more
