Over ten years ago I relocated to S. Florida from a different state seeking a female gynecologist who would offer stellar health care knowledge and be attentive, kind, and personable, while also respecting my health care choices. Unfortunately, I did not receive that from Dr. Helena Han's care.
As others have mentioned, her office was clean. As for Dr. Han, she was not mean, but she wasn't particularly personable either. During my time as a patient I was diagnosed with a very common, non-life threatening medical diagnosis, especially for women of color. Based on the letters I received, I had a routine condition and I was somewhat familiar with it, as other women in my family had the same condition. At that time, I was not in any major pain, I was extremely busy with a new job, and I had just relocated to the state of Florida, so I needed time to explore my medical options and decide what course of action I wanted to take, if any.
Nevertheless, Dr. Han instructed her staff to call and mail me several notifications stating their diagnosis and their recommendation to have surgery. I'd done a little research and knew that surgery wasn't necessary based on what the diagnosis was., however, I wanted the space to decide for myself and if I chose to proceed with Dr. Han's recommendation I would at my own free will, as I and any patient has the right to do. After receiving several letters and feeling harassed and pressured to have surgery I called the officec to notify them that I received their letter and I'd decide accordingly for myself. Subsequently, I received another letter with a very passive-aggressive tone threatening me stating that they had made several unsuccessful attempts to contact me and that I had 10 days "to complete [my] care" and if not, then I'd be released as a patient and assumed to have obtained care elsewhere and can request a copy of my records if desired.
At that point, I never contacted their practice again. I didn't need to be harassed or rushed into making a decision for how I wanted to proceed. As a physician, Dr. Han and staff should have simply called and left a VM and mailed me with their diagnosis and recommendation, then as most practices would do in this type of scenario non-forcibly request ask that the patient get in touch once ready to proceed IF THEY CHOOSE TO PROCEED with their recommendation. I've worked in healthcare, so I'm very aware that there is a tremndous amount of profit for physicians to perform surgeries and it felt as though that is what I was facing with the way I was treated by Dr. Han and staff seeking to force me to choose surgery. I have never forgotten how I was treated as a patient at this practice. read more
