My thanks to the people who set that up. And the computer lab is also wonderful. So glad to be visiting there often, including the free borrowing of puzzles in the front area.

This is a nice library, through I don't go through often even through I do live in Palos Park. And…read morefor some people they have a nice walk to the theater. The library always is clean or at least you would hope it is, no books on the floor always nicely on a shelf. The last time I was at the library was to see Rick Kogan at the library. He and Charles Osgood have come to the library to have talk and show pictures taken, and a couple of time they had copies of their books Sidewalks and Sidewalks 2. And I have a copy of each book autographed by them. They have a website where they update when they have kid and adult programs, they show both kids and adult movies. The 2nd Wednesdays of the month they have a brief discussion about a book, and then they show the movie that it is based on at 2:00 P.M. And they update on the website what movie will be shown, not that they I have attended. And then ever so often if scheduled they show a kid's movie on Saturday afternoons which will be updated on the calendar. They also have movies to rent, but I am not totally sure how many dvds are in their collection, but they charge $1.00 a dvd to check out, and if you turn the movie back late, the overdue fee is $2.00 per day. Which just shows you that you don't want to get a movie back late. But they let you keep the movie out for a week, and plus you get to take it out in the dvd case, and not another box that they have it in like you might find in any video stores that are still in business. Personally if I wanted to see a movie, I much rather get it from Netflix, where I can keep it out as long as I want to and no late fees. And of course they have plenty of books kids and adults that you can check out for free, but and I am not totally sure about it, so please do not quote me on it, but I think their late free for books are 10 cents per day. They are normally open for 6 days a week, Mondays thru Saturdays, and they are closed on Sundays, and major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. And you get to keep the books for 2 weeks which I would believe just as much time as any other library. But I can't remember the last book I ever checked out of the library, which is okay for me because I am not a big reader of books.

Some places merely are what they are, and some places truly excel at what they are. This library…read moreeasily falls into the latter category. It has so much to offer, I'd choose the C(rete)PL over C(hicago)PL any day of the week. Free and fast wifi, plenty of outlets, friendly staff, plenty of parking, a new/modern building (with a robust air conditioning system), and of course, many and varied volumes for those who like absorb the written word the old-fashioned way. I've been a patron of the Crete Library for decades, and I can also attest to the quality (and fun factor) of their children's reading program. Your humble author would like to formally and publicly thank the fine librarians, past and present, of fostering my love of readin' and writin' without which this post would be much more muddled.

There is clearly a lot to offer, and I appreciate the effort that goes into providing these services to the community. That said, I was disappointed by how frequently the issue of "tax-paying residents" was emphasized during our visit. On multiple occasions, a staff member who goes by the name Charlie, made comments about the library being funded by local taxpayers and emphasized who the library serves. While I completely understand and respect that public libraries are funded through local tax dollars, repeatedly emphasizing this point to visitors--especially children--can create an uncomfortable and unwelcoming atmosphere. The library also sends staff to local schools to introduce children to its programs and resources. Since the surrounding school districts include children from communities outside the library's immediate tax base, I believe the messaging should be more inclusive and focused on the resources and educational opportunities available rather than repeatedly emphasizing who pays the taxes. Hearing references to "tax-paying people" at least three separate times during one visit left us feeling as though we were being reminded that we were not necessarily considered part of the community the library was intended to serve. That is unfortunate because libraries should ideally be welcoming spaces where children and families feel encouraged to learn, explore, and participate. While I'm a taxpayer myself, our library does not come to his school, nor do they offer the service we were looking for.
