Pretty good library, and clean as far as suburban libraries go. I also love the fact it has one of…read morethe bigger book sale areas, of any suburban library I've visited. Once a month or once every 3 months(forget the time of the month and how often they occur), they discount every book and other non-book things they have in the book sale area. I also like how the downtown Hammond Goldblatt's clock was restored and is still operational on the 2nd floor of this library, above the stairs. This will sound like an odd reason for not giving it 5 stars, but it does often seem like they are slower to reopen it after inclement weather periods, vs. other suburban libraries. It happened to me once, and it annoyed me since I was hoping to visit it that day, and other libraries had already reopened after that same bad winter storm some years ago. Maybe I'm dwelling on that incident too much? Regardless it is a good library to visit, if by some chance you find yourself in Hammond.

This woman had the nerve to approach my kids at the library and ask them if they were sitting in the back isle by the books because they're looking to get into mischief/trouble and don't want anyone to see what they were doing. Mind you, they were sitting quietly doing their homework on the floor. Why would she make such a remark? I'm sure if their skin color matched hers, her approach would have been different. My daughter called me because she felt uncomfortable. I drove down there to find out what was going on, she had left already. I left my number for her to call me, it's been 3 days and I'm yet to receive a call. I also understand that when I left the library, another white woman came over to them and was equally rude to them. These people need an attitude adjustment. Bottom line is my kids will NEVER go back there and at this point I don't even want to hear from you Ms Director.

There is clearly a lot to offer, and I appreciate the effort that goes into providing these services to the community. That said, I was disappointed by how frequently the issue of "tax-paying residents" was emphasized during our visit. On multiple occasions, a staff member who goes by the name Charlie, made comments about the library being funded by local taxpayers and emphasized who the library serves. While I completely understand and respect that public libraries are funded through local tax dollars, repeatedly emphasizing this point to visitors--especially children--can create an uncomfortable and unwelcoming atmosphere. The library also sends staff to local schools to introduce children to its programs and resources. Since the surrounding school districts include children from communities outside the library's immediate tax base, I believe the messaging should be more inclusive and focused on the resources and educational opportunities available rather than repeatedly emphasizing who pays the taxes. Hearing references to "tax-paying people" at least three separate times during one visit left us feeling as though we were being reminded that we were not necessarily considered part of the community the library was intended to serve. That is unfortunate because libraries should ideally be welcoming spaces where children and families feel encouraged to learn, explore, and participate. While I'm a taxpayer myself, our library does not come to his school, nor do they offer the service we were looking for.

I stopped at the Pullman branch in order to drop off ballots for the city elections. It's a small…read morebranch but it was hopping today with people there to vote, and election workers trying to talk up their candidates. Voting and ballot drop-off took place in the community room just inside the entrance to the building. This branch has a small parking lot in the back with about twenty spaces, as well as street parking because Green Street is a cul-de-sac here. It's a small branch and a single story, but it's also a newer one having been built in 2005. It's in really good condition I was surprised to find it's been around that long. The architecture is in the prairie style that they've been employing in the newer branches, or at least the ones built around that time. Like many of the newer branches it's LEED certified as well. There's a children's section, and the main room of the library has a large number of computers for the neighborhood's use. When I was there, only one was in use but the dude seemed to be winning his game! They don't seem to have a huge collection of books, actually, though libraries are so much more than that these days; luckily the CPL system is huge and you can get pretty much anything transferred between branches if the local one doesn't have it. Given the location of the branch it's not a surprise that they feature information related to the Pullman company. Specifically, they highlight A. Philip Randolph, an important figure in labor, Pullman company, railroad, and Civil Rights history. He spearheaded the movement to unionize the Pullman Porters, and for his efforts the Pullman Porter museum is named in his honor. They also have some nice artwork; in the main room there are some panels depicting various scenes. In the entrance hall, there are portrayals of both A Philip Randolph and Barack Obama. Almost forgot to mention what I saw I was leaving. There was a little box just inside the door with two boxes of naloxone, aka Narcan, to use in suspected cases of opioid overdose. Since Illinois is a state where anyone is allowed to carry this to provide aid if necessary I've been wanting to pick some up for myself to carry, but I haven't seen it in public spaces to prove assistance. I was pretty glad to see it.
