On our way to dinner last night, my companions and I walked past a small outdoor patio with nice-looking tables and little tiki torches, near a sign that said COCKTAILS. Seemed like a cozy place to relax for a quiet drink, and I am a fan of both COCKTAILS and tiki torches, so on our way home we stopped for a nightcap at the Hammond Bar.
While I can't say anything about the interior of the bar, as I never actually set foot inside it, the patio was quiet and very comfortable - a perfect bit of gemütlichkeit at the end of our evening. The drink list seemed to go on forever, with all manner of available options, though mostly at a price that would keep me from having more than one or two drinks here. (€8 or more for a cocktail, unless it's a REALLY SPECIAL cocktail, is awfully high unless I'm paying for "cool", and this place wasn't quite _that_ cool.)
The service was an absolute delight! (As an American transplant who spent many years as a waitress herself, the Viennese "service industry" often leaves something to be desired, so this is a big deal to me.) Our server was friendly without being obtrusive, asked me how I preferred my drink when I ordered it (unusual here!), brought us little complimentary snacks (even replaced our empty peanut dish with a small glass of pretzels after my companion had plowed through the initial offering), and kept our ashtray nearly empty for the entirety of our visit (not an easy task with Herr Boyfriend and I both being pretty smoky socializers). He kept a polite distance, preferring to hang out at the far end of the patio, but made frequent eye contact to make sure that we never needed to ask for anything. When I smiled at him, he smiled back! Bonus points!
All in all, Hammond Bar seemed like a great place to come with a friend or a date for a quiet, civilized drink and some intimate conversation.
BLOODY MARY SIDE MISSION: Some of you who know me personally may know that I am on a never-ending quest to find a good Bloody Mary in Vienna. Spotting one on the menu here, I was super excited when the young man taking our drink order asked if I would like that spicier (yesplz) or what did I prefer? This was, for me, a Viennese first. (Normally, I end up having to ask for Tabasco to doctor it up myself after the fact.) The drink, when it came, was a bit more "scharf" than the other Bloodys I've ordered here in town, though not really what I would call "spicy", and it had no garnish at all - just a long wooden stir-stick that I initially mistook for an extra-long cocktail straw in the flickering torchlight. (Derp.) Still, probably the best tasting Bloody I've found yet in Vienna and a bit larger than most on average. I consider this a rousing success. read more
