Wall projected pictures and 60s style hanging speakers abound in this very funky bar/chill out lounge. Large bar and ample space to sit, including cinema style seating along one wall. Donau is located on a side street and has no sign indicating its presence; a friend and I walked…read morepast it at first while we were looking for it but quickly realized the door in the wall led to a dark (but creatively lit) space pulsing with chill beats. We got there super early (around 9PM), and the place was empty--as one expected on a Friday evening that early. To our surprise, and to our wallet's delight, 9-10Pm was happy hour that night; cocktails were 1/2 off. We both ordered long islands; usually I can't taste the alcohol in a long island, but the bartender had fixed us up with a generous amount of alcohol. Our bartender was dressed in head to toe black, including black skinny jeans, with a mop of shaggy dark hair; he floated around the bar looking more the part of a tortured artist than a bar tender, but he did fit the grungy-in-a-hip-way atmosphere. By midnight, the place was pretty packed with people. Groups of friends sat along the walls in faded yellow movie theater seats, around the bar in the center of the bar, and stood in clumps, chatting with heads cocked sideways and a drink in hand once all the seating areas had filled up. I didn't get the sense that this is a bar that gets raucous or overly crazy; the crowd was tame even when the bar filled up--this was in stark contrast to the bars we visited in Budapest. The music was good, but nothing too special. There were a few cool trap tracks dropped; luckily no dupstep or pop. Nothing really memorable though. Donau would definitely be a place to frequent if I lived in Vienna! Definitely check it out if you're in the city.

They were good and strong! We ordered Taco Chips with guacamole and cheese sauce (3,90). The chips were warm and nicely seasoned! We also had the chicken burritos enchilada style (6,80), which were quite large and very good. There was also a very large selection of board games offered. A binder filled with the description of all of the games was brought to us at our table, and once we had chosen our game, they brought the game to us. Overall, we had a good time, drinks were cheap, and the food was good. I will definitely go back.

You must be a smoker or enjoy smokey atmospheres to really enjoy this place…read more Came here with a friend for a drink. Nice range of options, you can average 3 Euros for Spritzer (various flavour adding options), and less then 6 Euros for a cocktail. I think two nothing special beers on tap. Do not consider this high end. Lots of board game options, although when I was there, no one was playing. Relax staff, waitress even wearing super baggy sweater. In front the bar stools/tables, in the back lots of booths. Its also right in front of the 13A bus stop. Did not try the food nor the bathroom. Does seem that there are lots of bar snack food options here, like chips and dips, which is relatively rare in Vienna I think, and of course the burrito for the drink folks for about 7 Euros, which looks relatively healthy and not overstuffed,as one could expect in such a bar. However, you absolutely must be ok with lots of smoke. It was foggy smokey, and I had to wash my hair twice to get the smell out after being there for just an hour. The whole ride home I wanted to pass out from the smell. Hence, would be cool and chilax place, idea of board games is cool and the drink prices are ok. But the smoke just makes me say no way to go again.

The concept is simple: reserve a table for you and your mates, choose a boardgame (they even have retro ones!) and play the night away. Very cool. For me it beats partying in Vienna. Remember the instructions will be in German so if you don't speak the language best play it safe and pick a game you're sure you remember how to play! We made that mistake and ended up making up our own rules to Cluedo...We laughed a lot. They serve bar snacks like "brot" which is toasted bread with toppings kind of like a "toastie" to you Brits. I really like the service as well, the guy was cool and spoke English to us recommending beers and other drinks to us. Looking forward to going back - If I was you I'd reserve a table. Not sure about a weeknight but we went on a Saturday and it was full.

My highlight of the evening - after playing a few board games, I realised that there is also a possibilty to play table football in a hidden corner :) The one and only bartender/waiter was very nice, but I had a feeling that she was a bit overwhelmed by the crowds in the bar (one more staff memember would be nice). Also sometimes it was tricky for her to bring people their food orders, since the place can get very full and it is not always easy to pass everyone with a bowl of soup or other dishes without dropping something on the floor... .. But this is of course not the waiter's fault, it's just that it can be a bit tight sometimes.

The place itself is quite small with only 7 or 8 tables to choose from and a fair amount of space at the bar to stand but don't be fooled. There is an amazing selection of beers here. Sprawling over 5 pages and including many of my personal favourite beers there is so much to choose from. I didn't count but I imagine there must be over 150 different beers here. Wow! Table reservation is available and it seems to be a good idea if you are going with a group of friends as standing at the bar leaves not too much room to chat and converse. There is a separate smoking section which is very rare in Vienna and a plus for the non smokers out there. The service is a little slow because of the sheer volume of people and the smallness of the place. There were only two servers there when I was there and probably 50 or so people. But I must admit that they are very, very good. They are attentive and organised, knowledgable and focused on the job. Taking orders 4 or 5 tables in advance and then delivering is really a great skill and a pleasure to behold! There is a smallish snacks menu available and from what I saw was really pretty decent. It helps to soak up some of the beer with something to eat. And now to the main event, the beers: There a few beers on tap as well as a few Austrian pils and Weissbiers to choose from but the focus certainly is on Belgium beers. For such a small place the beer menu has a great representation of Belgium beer types. Lambics, Blondes, Dubbels, Tripels, Trappists, Dark Ales, IPAs and more are all to be found here. It really is worth the price of admission to have a great menu such as is to be found here. So if you like Belgium beers this is the place for you. "Op uw gezondheid!"
