The Loos Bar was designed by famous Viennese architect and design Adolf Loos in 1908. It's 290 square feet of onyx, marble, and mahogany. It really is an incredible space. (They do have outdoor seating but if it's your first visit to the Loos Bar, you want to sit inside - it's part of the experience.) It's a cocktail bar, so my friend and I each ordered a cocktail according to our preferences from the menu - which is huge. My friend had a cocktail made with mezcal, and I had the Adolf Loos Spritzer (champagne, soda, strawberries, and mint). We both enjoyed our cocktails. Mine was exactly what I wanted on a warm afternoon day - refreshing and light. We went in the early afternoon, because I worried that this tiny little bar would get packed if we went at a more traditional hour for cocktails. It was pretty empty when we arrived and sat inside. So that's what's great about the Loos Bar - the design, the style, the drinks, the history. What's not so great? The service wasn't great, pretty unfriendly/unwelcoming (our bartender seemed almost offended we'd bothered him by ordering a drink). And they have a dress code - no flip flops, backpacks, or shorts (although "elegant shorts are welcome outdoors"). The dress code is reasonable, I suppose, and I probably wouldn't have minded if it weren't for the poor service. Despite this bad service, I can't give the Loos Bar any less than four stars, because it was one of the coolest bars I've ever visited: an amazing, historic space and some great cocktails, too.

Wall projected pictures and 60s style hanging speakers abound in this very funky bar/chill out lounge. Large bar and ample space to sit, including cinema style seating along one wall. We got there super early (around 9PM), and the place was empty--as one expected on a Friday evening that early. To our surprise, and to our wallet's delight, 9-10Pm was happy hour that night; cocktails were 1/2 off. We both ordered long islands; usually I can't taste the alcohol in a long island, but the bartender had fixed us up with a generous amount of alcohol. Our bartender was dressed in head to toe black, including black skinny jeans, with a mop of shaggy dark hair; he floated around the bar looking more the part of a tortured artist than a bar tender, but he did fit the grungy-in-a-hip-way atmosphere. By midnight, the place was pretty packed with people. Groups of friends sat along the walls in faded yellow movie theater seats, around the bar in the center of the bar, and stood in clumps, chatting with heads cocked sideways and a drink in hand once all the seating areas had filled up. I didn't get the sense that this is a bar that gets raucous or overly crazy; the crowd was tame even when the bar filled up--this was in stark contrast to the bars we visited in Budapest. The music was good, but nothing too special. There were a few cool trap tracks dropped; luckily no dupstep or pop. Nothing really memorable though. Donau would definitely be a place to frequent if I lived in Vienna! Definitely check it out if you're in the city.

We had a relatively short wait at the bar and enjoyed a racket while I waited. Their special is the fried pork knuckle dish. We ordered the full portion, which is enough for 2 people. It was most certainly enough. The skin was so tasty, crunchy, and crispy, while the interior remained moist and flavorful. I will most certainly come back again.

The food is fantastic, and VERY Austrian. Their pork knuckle is great! The atmosphere here is noisy, but to be expected for a large crowd... this place is usually packed- that alone should tell you it's a good place to eat. However, the "service" seems to be where everyone that gives low ratings has the issue. Well, I can tell you that their service here is stellar for their busyness... especially if you compare it to the Austrian restaurant standard. Don't come here expecting to be waited on by someone who bends over backwards looking for a bigger tip. Remember, you aren't in America. Your waiter/waitress isn't even expecting a tip because they make a living wage. It's all subjective. Oh, and this place is also dog-friendly.

Continuation of lutz - die bar3…read more 2) What was the worst thing you've ever experienced what the best? In 2008 we opened the Music Club at souterrain, the planning took place in 2007 and was also associated with significant structural alteration works. One day I read in the newspaper that there would be a citizens' initiative against us, because we would dig for this club underground till Rahlgasse and that the whole project would be illegal. Well, a group of local residents were concealing behind it who did not like the idea that a music club would open. We were flabbergasted, especially because until then no one had approached us directly, or had complained directly. In the end we were able to clear all discrepancies with the local residents to everyone's satisfaction. The way was already very depressing and first of all cost unnecessarily life energy. I understand that nobody likes to life next to a club, but we are situated in the Mariahilfer Strasse, one of the main Viennese shopping streets, where there are also many pubs, restaurants, cafés! And finally an business owner has every right to establish his business in an area where it is common, to be an entrepreneur. The best part - I was particularly pleased with it, that in-lutz-even books were written. A father wrote about his paternity leave and his recreational breaks in a cocktail bar and a politician wrote about laughter and love of life. This is something permanent and without our bar these books might not exist. And every time I "am silently sitting around" in a corner of the restaurant and look around, I visualize the space as it looked nine years ago - dark, louring, cold, just a warehouse and then I see what we have created: an elegant, modern, bright and friendly place, filled with vibrant life, laughter, joy, soft music, in which it is awesome to relax - something permanent where many people meet, get to know each other, fall in love, talk - a place of communication, a meeting place, a meeting place of nations, meeting place of people, meeting place of humanity - a place where you enjoy being! 3) What would you pass on to young people or young entrepreneurs? I would not presume to recommend something to young people , to turn out the Elder. Elderly tend to always know everything better than young people and to complain about something new. In former times e.g. it was Rock'n Roll, today it is the music on YouTube. Each generation is different and that's a good. I see this every day with my three sons. Young entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs who are not so long in the business - good business for one more enthusiasm, but also the famous business plan on the A5 page. I must be able to calculate and present the economic side on one page, if that is not possible, it would also not work on a grand scale. Furthermore, you should always expect the unexpected and therefore you should add 30-50% to the planned cost. And a business also has to survive with 1/5 of the expected revenue, because you can never realize everything at a level of 100%. Furthermore: If you do not know something, you should place questions - this is evidence of maturity and not weakness! You should also definitely seek advice of authorities, institutions such as the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and municipal authorities, if one keeps in touch, nothing will be a problem. Thank you for allowing us a peek through the keyhole!

For the Club side on a Saturday night, not the bar/restaurant side (which I hear is good btw)…read more I mean, 4 stars, not because in itself its fabulous, but by default based on other clubs in Vienna. Music: Its a mix of the fabulous later 90s, some current, and a touch of 80s. Which is fine, except GEES VIENNA DJS, HOLD THE SONG FOR MORE THAN 30 SECONDS. So the music was pretty decent, and the DJ held it for about 1 min a song, which means, better than lots of other clubs in Vienna. So like I said, by default. Bathroom: its ok. I like there is a ledge in the stall itself to put my drink, which most clubs in Vienna forget. Ya I know it sounds not so great, but a girl has to watch her drink in da clubs, for realz. Bunch of big long mirrors in it so that 's cool. Down side is that the ventilation is not so great, so on a hot night, we were keeping the main door open, which blocks the gents from getting to their bathroom. Drinks: Ouch. Pricey, think easy 8 Euros for a plain whiskey coke. Smoke situation: There is smokey, but was not exceedingly bad. The people: Maybe a mid to younger 20s crowd, but completely fine. A few spots to sit, without blocking the dance floor. Cover: Seems there is sometimes cover, night I went was free for the ladies. Score! Overall: Sure. Why not, bring your friends.
