This is what I expect in a place like this: -Loud music! -Easy access to the bar and swift service, glass collectors. -A decent fun-loving clientele. -Coat service. Unfortunately the Travel Shack fails on all these points. The music itself was pretty ok, but way too soft! Turn it up to 11 or don't turn it up at all. I could quite easily have a conversation with the person next to me without having to raise my voice. Fail! Maybe for a restaurant the level is ok but for a bar/club no way near! The place was packed and it took us a little too long to get served in my opinion even thought there were plenty of staff behind the bar. As there was nobody around to pick up the empty bottles and glasses the dance floor quickly filled up with both and we ended up either knocking them over or dancing around them. The clientele is almost exclusively students who seemed were out to make a name for themselves. Take the hint, if the girl says no it means NO! There was no coatroom and we ended up hanging out coats on the few overcrowded hooks available. In Vienna this is not really a problem but when we came to collect our coats they were on the floor and other coats in their place. Not in keeping with the respectful Viennese I have come to know. I guess if you are near and don't feel like going anywhere else then drop by, but for me just a couple of UBahn stations away are much nicer, hipper clubs to choose from.

A decent Australian pub located in the 6th district. It's far enough from all of the touristy areas…read moreto keep the clientele completely locals. They have three rooms: a nonsmoking area (to the right when you enter) that can be rented out for private functions, a main bar area (to the left), and a basement bar. My biggest complaint with this place is that both the main bar and the basement bar get really really smoky. They must not have any ventilation to help air out the place and it gets to be a but too much for me after awhile. The barkeepers are friendly and the beer cold, so it's not all bad if you don't mind the smoke.

I wanted to see what else was going on at night after the film & food fest I attended winded down for the evening, and I remember I saw it listed as a cool Aussie bar on one of the hostel guides. After I got off the subway, I couldn't figure out which direction to go to. Luckily, I ran into 5 or 6 English-friendly students who were also on their way there, and after grabbing a couple of cans from a hotdog stand, we all headed down to Down Under. It was late Saturday night, and wasn't busy at all. The group was celebrating a friend's birthday, and several more of their party was already there (I think their group of 15 or 18 made up the bulk of the patrons there). They said its one of their fav hangouts, and often meet up there to have a pint or two and play a few rounds of foosball while watching whatever game was on. The bar's an average no-frills pub. The decor's hard to remember, it was pretty dim in there, but everything is wood, and wooded booths alongside the walls. They had generic alternative music playing (maybe Nickelback? Isn't it always Nickelback??), and a jukebox that would randomly play a selection. Everyone including the bartender was friendly, relaxed, and just chill. I can't tell if this place normally gets packed or not. It's a bit out of the way from a lot of the other nightlife in the triangle (which is where we ended up afterwards), but they definitely have a regular following. If you want to hang out with a few nice locals, and don't want to do anything more than grab a glass of beer or two before heading in for the evening, this place will work out just swimmingly. :)

I have never come across anything like this in the UK and I love it!!!…read more Get a few of your friends together and head down to Brot & Spiele for a night of boardgame fun and beer! The concept is simple: reserve a table for you and your mates, choose a boardgame (they even have retro ones!) and play the night away. Very cool. For me it beats partying in Vienna. Remember the instructions will be in German so if you don't speak the language best play it safe and pick a game you're sure you remember how to play! We made that mistake and ended up making up our own rules to Cluedo...We laughed a lot. They serve bar snacks like "brot" which is toasted bread with toppings kind of like a "toastie" to you Brits. I really like the service as well, the guy was cool and spoke English to us recommending beers and other drinks to us. Looking forward to going back - If I was you I'd reserve a table. Not sure about a weeknight but we went on a Saturday and it was full.

My highlight of the evening - after playing a few board games, I realised that there is also a possibilty to play table football in a hidden corner :) The one and only bartender/waiter was very nice, but I had a feeling that she was a bit overwhelmed by the crowds in the bar (one more staff memember would be nice). Also sometimes it was tricky for her to bring people their food orders, since the place can get very full and it is not always easy to pass everyone with a bowl of soup or other dishes without dropping something on the floor... .. But this is of course not the waiter's fault, it's just that it can be a bit tight sometimes.
