It's in a very busy tourist area, and a lot of people were out and about late at night, so I felt very safe walking around here. Service is AMAZING. They let me in free of charge, telling me there was no cover charge tonight. The bartender was so sweet to me, she got me a glass of Green Fairy absinthe, and let me take a photo of the bottle. A guy approached me and asked me if he could get me a drink, which was very nice of him. He first asked in German, and when I told him I speak English, he switched to English. I politely declined, telling him I already had a drink. I had SO MUCH fun dancing too goth music (quite a handful of VNV), and especially enjoyed a remix of The Cure's "Love Song," a remix of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence," and a remix of NIN's "Head Like a Whole." Danced my way to my Fitbit calorie goal of 2100 before I headed back to my hotel room to rest up for another day of exploring Vienna!

We got there super early (around 9PM), and the place was empty--as one expected on a Friday evening that early. We both ordered long islands; usually I can't taste the alcohol in a long island, but the bartender had fixed us up with a generous amount of alcohol. Our bartender was dressed in head to toe black, including black skinny jeans, with a mop of shaggy dark hair; he floated around the bar looking more the part of a tortured artist than a bar tender, but he did fit the grungy-in-a-hip-way atmosphere. By midnight, the place was pretty packed with people. Groups of friends sat along the walls in faded yellow movie theater seats, around the bar in the center of the bar, and stood in clumps, chatting with heads cocked sideways and a drink in hand once all the seating areas had filled up. I didn't get the sense that this is a bar that gets raucous or overly crazy; the crowd was tame even when the bar filled up--this was in stark contrast to the bars we visited in Budapest. The music was good, but nothing too special. There were a few cool trap tracks dropped; luckily no dupstep or pop. Nothing really memorable though. Donau would definitely be a place to frequent if I lived in Vienna! Definitely check it out if you're in the city.

While some people were quite normal, we spotted plenty of extremely young kids getting smashed, perhaps for the first time ever. Also some punks and junkies were there. One skinny geezer ran around stopping at tables and staring at people. Then proceeded to the next table. I don't know why the bar tolerated that. We then read that a DJ would play indie rock in the club inside, for which we paid 6 euros. What we eventually got was dance music. The doorman was practising roundspin kicks - a complete no-go to me. The barstaff on the inside first seemed undermanned, but then we noticed that they were just crap. Even when there were almost no people lining up waiting times of 20 mins seemed normal. Bottom line: don't go there.

They will claim you purchased things that you did not and then threaten to call the police on you if you do not pay. They pray on foreign people and use huge bouncers to intimidate them into submission. I went here with a large group of people, and when I tried to leave they claimed I bought a huge bottle of vodka (I did not purchase anything while I was there) and told me I needed to pay over 70 euros. When I told them they would need to supply proof that this happened, they brought over several large bouncers to intimidate me. This place is terrible. Don't go here.
