If you want great, not fancy, breakfast fare, you should head on over to Hame Shop Cafe. For $25, we got more food than we could possibly finish. My husband had a ham and cheese omelette with real hash browns (not frozen), toast and coffee. I had side orders of ham, grits and sautéed peppers, onions and mushrooms. I couldn't even get through half of mine, and my husband barely finished his. If you're looking for a 5-star dining experience, you should move along, but if you want good food, fast and plenty of it - get yourself over there pronto! We were in town for vacation and we searching for a breakfast spot walking distance of our hotel. Their breakfast menu is great! Lots to pick from! Everything was delicious except for the catfish I ordered (but I do love that they offer catfish for breakfast!). The fry was just too heavy and too cooked for my personal liking. I ended up picking most of it off. While we were there, we noticed locals dining and lots of locals getting carry out. Another couple who were on vacation walked in, looked around at the place and left. It's not a fancy spot. It's your classic local dive (dive in a good way) breakfast joint. They've had a lot of business over the years so the floors are scuffed and everything is a little rough around the edges, but it is clean. I would eat here again! read more

Ham Shop is an old-school no-frills diner on the edge of Greektown. I saw a mix of downtown professionals and locals eating here for a good reason. The food is excellent and reasonably priced, and breakfast is served all day. I ordered the catfish breakfast with eggs and potatoes and a side of grits for takeout. The cook time took twenty minutes which I spent walking around Greektown. The catfish was huge, perfectly cooked, hot, crispy, meaty, and tender on the inside. I was surprised that the fish tasted so good. I love grits with any breakfast meal, and I received a large container. The eggs and hash browns were also well-cooked. I have no complaints about this breakfast. I recommend Ham Shop for a classic local Coney diner-style breakfast downtown. read more

Cheap cutlery, mismatched tables and chairs, not much in the way of decor except an autographed picture of some guy from Gary Indiana named Micheal Jackson, apparently he loved the joint. He ate it anyway because he will eat anything. Only thing we asked for was napkins. Never got them. Pretty small spot so we could hear the staff talking about heading home asap. Don't blame them but made me uncomfortable asking for something else that maybe I would enjoy Waitress asked if I wanted a box because I obviously didn't eat much. No thanks. Just left it there. She never came back to ask if our meals were ok. Friendly staff but just know at 130 they were not taking customers (closes as 2) and are more focused on getting out the door themselves. read more

We were here for an event at Ford Field (MHSAA Wrestling Finals). The restaurant is small in size and there were only 2 people taking orders and serving food. They said they were unaware of the event. However, even the cook came out to help serve food and make sure people had their orders taken. It definitely is not the newest restaurant, but I would not say it was dirty. Gently used might be a good description. It reminds you of an older diner with good food. Greektown at six in the morning is deserted. The Ham Shop looks like a run down old diner, even by daylight. Greektown before dawn has the empty city streets of a film noir. Eating in the Ham Shop before dawn is just like being in a real life copy of Nighthawks. (That is the famous Edward Hopper painting about being in a lonely diner in the middle of the night while all the streets are dark around you.) But of course the people in Edward Hopper's Nighthawks weren't eating Giant plates of really good stir fry with really good pita bread on the side. If the cooking was better in Edward Hopper's diner, all the people in the diner would have been happy, and the painting would have looked like it was painted by Norman Rockwell. * * * So if you want the painting of your life to be happy, eat at the Ham Shop. read more
