    We lived here for a year (mid 2017-18) and while at first we were excited, it took a turn for the…read moreworst. We DO NOT recommend living here and try to warn people of the deceitful and unethical business practices that go into the management of this and affiliated properties. I'll go into detail, but my main point is that if you are looking into living here, be aware that their only intention is to get you into the lease and don't care about how they treat you after. We met numerous other tenants that felt deceived and mistreated by the office staff and gave their own examples of incredibly terrible service, i.e. trying to send residents city tax bills or spray painting junk appliances and claiming them as new. Our experience started to go south about 4 months in. All tenants got a note on their door stating that contractors would be entering the apartments in a specific 5 day window to replace the windows of each apartment. During this time, tenants were expected to move their furniture to accommodate them and lock their pets in the bathroom from 9am-4pm. This was a particularly odd and unreasonable request since the only pets allowed here are cats. One WEEK before our scheduled time, we came home to find that the work was completed with the apartment left unlocked, furniture damaged and our cat trembling in fear under our bed (Which were incredibly relieved she was still there). I immediately went to the office and was told there must've been a miscommunication which no one ever took any sort of responsibility for. Fast forward 4 months and we discovered an issue that was going to require an exterminator (will spare the details). After being told we were overreacting, the exterminator determined we were right. While this issue itself was not the fault of the complex, they handled it in the most aggravating and unaccommodating way as possible. Since the landlord is required by law to pay for these issues, they didn't allow us to schedule our own extermination. We also had to seek other living arrangements as we felt staying there would be hazardous until they came, especially since they waited 5 days from the initial finding to schedule the treatment. Management not only harassed us for not staying in an infested apartment, but also decided that we (and apparently no-one else) were to follow a set of made-up rules to prepare for the process, which they added onto an already extensive list set out by the exterminator. The situation was already incredibly stressful and upsetting for us and the mistreatment with zero empathy by management was infuriating! Upon near completion of the issue, we had requested a copy of the exterminator report since all of our furniture had been treated with chemicals. This was within our MA tenant rights and easy to make a copy of and give us. After being ignored the first 2 times, I went to ask in person for it and the GM told me it was against their company policy to provide such to their residents. Confused by this, I informed her that it was a state law yet she insisted that I was in the wrong and her policy would stand. Angered by this, we called the city and filed a complaint. A few days later, they immediately handed over the documents to the city that were then copied and given to me. The GM later ambushed me into having a private conversation where she admitted she was irate that we got said paperwork. She threatened to sue us for slander for this anticipated review and mentioning that some of the reviews for this and other affiliated properties on other apartment hunting sites are embellished written by staff members themselves. We obviously decided to move at the end of the lease and after researching further, realized they had numerous complaints with the Better Business Bureau about the mishandling of security deposits. People had written a variety of stories saying that they had no issues until they moved out and the Sutton kept their security deposits without justified reason. That being said, we had concerns that they would do that to us in retaliation and we had to seek legal advice on how to handle this situation. When we notified the office of our concerns and informed them of our decision to withhold our last month's rent, we were once again met with threats that they would interfere with any future lease or home buying process that we plan on pursuing for the rest of our lives. That's just pure insanity! The apartment itself was in good shape and in a rural area of the city and we loved the location. It's unfortunate that this complex's potential is brought down by its management. The moral of the story is, once they get you into a lease, they only care about the rent money and anyone educated enough to know their rights as tenants in this state poses a threat to their fraudulent business practices. We hope by sharing our experience, we can save at least one prospective resident from falling victim to the Sutton Apartments' dishonesty.
