I rarely say this with any type of service I receive, simply because I expect the level of customer service that I would provide to the people I support: this visit could not be improved upon. The doctor clearly explained every aspect of my care and condition with the practice of an experienced, caring teacher. The optician, Jun, was incredibly knowledgeable about the benefits my insurances provided, and thoughtfully explained each option I ordered for my glasses. I decided to switch to Halpern, not only because my wife and children began coming here and I saw how friendly Dr. Boyland was, but also because I've had bad experiences with the Opticians at other eye care facilities. Halpern is, by far, the best experience I've had in my forty-one years on this Earth. The locations provide me ease of schedule appointments near my home in Bear, or at work in Dover. I've had such a pleasant experience that, when my second insurance re-up's next month, Jun and I have already planned out a pair of Oakley sunglasses for me to purchase to go with the Oakley glasses I ordered for everyday wear on Saturday. I've been a patient of Halpern since 1998. I was referred there by my father who has been a patient with them since before I was born. I've always had nothing but good things to say about them which is why I was so surprised that my wife recently had a less than ideal experience there. Despite this fact, as you can see from my 5 star rating, this story has a happy ending :) I recently bought prescription Ray-Bans from them and was surprised how inexpensive they were after all insurance and discounts were applied. My wife drives a lot for her work so a good pair of sunglasses is a must. She recently has had issues with her contacts so she no longer can wear plain sunglasses. I was so pleased with how cheap and easy it was to get my prescription sunglasses, I didn't hesitate to refer her to Halpern. She met with the optometrist and selected a pair of glasses, but was shocked to find that they were FOUR TIMES higher than what I paid. When she asked why they were so much, she couldn't really get a clear answer, but they said they would call her back. That call back never came. I called them yesterday to ask why hers were more. As it turns out, her glasses were far nicer than mine. My wife is frugal to a fault. I know that she would never spring for anything more than the basics. She even was hesitant about getting them in the first place. According to my wife, these so called "options" were not presented as such. It's every customers nightmare to be fast talked by a slick sales person and that's exactly how this transaction felt. I went to Halpern's website fearing I would have to fight through hordes of employees until I could get to someone who could help me. Imagine my surprise when I found a link for their patient advocate right on their home page. It became immediately clear to me when speaking with the Patient care advocate Beverly that she was passionate about what she did. She listened very well and took the time to ask questions to confirm her understanding. She informed me that she would need to do some research into what solution she could offer me. I felt that a full refund of the add on options would be right because if they had ever called her back, my wife could have cancelled them. Now that the glasses are done, cancellation was not an option. Beverly agreed with me on this point and the add on options that my wife did not want were refunded to our card! I realize that no one is perfect, and mistakes happen. One of the things that separates good companies from great companies is how they respond to customer complaints. This experience has cemented my belief that Halpern truly is a GREAT company. If they continue to treat their loyal customers as good as me, I predict great things in their future. read more

Every time, and I do mean every time we've made appointments there is always an issue with them saying it's not covered, and of course it is covered under my insurance but we have this big prolonged ordeal. And if you are looking for a good price on your contacts or glasses, this is definitely not the place to go. Today was the last straw. The people here are unprofessional and could care less. We were patients here for a few years at the Bear location... We saw Dr Boyland and while we appreciated his thorough exams and explanations on our concerns/questions. He, and the office staff all failed at the reason I need an EYE doctor. Suffering with some aliments which makes "normal lighting" for most, quite PAINFUL for me I from time to time require a note from the eye doctor asking my employer to make simple, free & necessary modifications to my work station (read- simply making sure blinds are closed so I can physically see my computer and papers and simply do my job while not bring on other aliments caused by excessive lighting for me). I was told via the front desk that NO, he won't write that letter and he won't for any patient, under any circumstances. I could NOT believe it. That is a part of the reason I have to go to the doctor and spent the money to do so. THIS IS IN THEIR JOB DESCRIPTION. From what I gather, he won't do it "because it would take too much time"?!?!?!? There is a thing called a form letter that you can edit for specifics. REALLY BOYLAND? I gave Halpern which had just switched over to being bought into by MyEyeDoctor my money, all for nothing. I talked to several people who suggested I call Rachel, their office manager all to no avail. No one bothered following up along the way, I always kept calling in. Clearly they didn't care nor want to deal with me. So, I hope I can save ANYONE the trouble....if you want to have trust in your doctor and their staff and that they will serve YOU! Don't waste your time going to them. I switched Eye Doctors and have never been happier. I had my doctor's note that was required and new exam all same day... no hassle. Do your self a favor, forget about going here and supporting a business that won't care for you. I truly hope this review helps others make a wise decision for their own health & self. read more

Very bad experience; a great opportunity to lose you time. They asked me about the insurance plan when I called them for securing an appointment for vision check. I called my insurance and clarify that, then I called them and informed them with plan and gave them the insurance company phone for double check. When I came for my appointment they asked me the same STUPID question about my insurance plan, and Guess what now they start calling the insurance company!! After they confirmed the info they want- letting me wait for 20 minutes- they simply said that my appointment should be re-scheduled since the insurance call took them most all the appointment time slot. Really!! I won't re-schedule with them or advice anyone to visit them. read more

Yesterday I went to Halpern Eye Care for the second time. I've been wearing glasses since I was 9 years old and I am 64 at this writing. For 25+ years, maybe more, I used an optometrist who was close to my home. Eight years ago, I moved and my optometrist retired. Ouch. Very difficult to find somebody new. I went to Halpern because my husband was already going there. I was apprehensive because it was a large, multi-office business. I was used to the very personal care with my own guy who was a neighbor even. Halpern was wonderful! They were so welcoming, they didn't talk down to me, everyone there from the people who greeted me when I came in to the doctor to his aides/assistants to the woman who helped me pick out frames and did the financial stuff were just great. They knew what they were doing. They talked to me like I was intelligent. I especially liked that the woman who helped me with the frames did not make me feel like I was pressured to make a quick decision. I had only found out about 10 years ago that such a thing as fashion existed when it came to glass frames -- I didn't know previously that frame styles went in and out of fashion. I asked for help, wanting to know what was fashionable, and both this time and two years ago when I went to Halpern for the first time, I was given solid advice. Last time, I got compliments from my kids on having glasses that were actually fashionable. Before that, I always got the largest glasses possible so that my whole eye could be easily seen on both sides. That was a carryover from the days in the 50s and 60s when eyeglasses were tiny and ugly and one of the boys in my eighth grade class yelled out to me, "Boys don't make passes at girls that wear glasses!" from across the street. Talk about a downer. Anyway --- Halpern is excellent. No complaints. I felt like I was in good hands. I think I have found an optometrist-optician-eyeglasses source for the rest of my life. I arrived 15 minutes early and was seen immediately. Everyone was welcoming and professional. Dr. Schaedler gave me an excellent explanation of the status of my eyes and what to expect in the future. Prior to my visit, I received a call explaining that my insurance wouldn't cover the visit, giving me a chance to cancel if I wanted to. Terrific customer service. read more

I have to agree with everyone else....5 stars! My insurance was expiring within 48 hrs and Halpern was able to get me in the next day. I was a new patient. Every other eye doctor I called wanted to schedule me for over a month away! I did have a bit of a problem with the first receptionist. She told me my insurance wasn't valid there when I knew it was. That put me in a bad mood and on edge but everyone else at the office was top notch. The assistant who met with me before the doctor seemed very knowledgeable. The doctor was also very knowledgeable and took his time with me. I have been on prescription eye drops for over 10 years and he explained in depth the importance of taking them every day. I was really impressed with the time he took and thoroughness. He asked me several times if I had any additional questions. At the end of the visit, Dana jumped in to help me with my call to the insurance company. She got everything taken care of and explained to the original receptionist why she couldn't my name on the insurance list she was looking at. She was looking in the wrong place. I was highly impressed with Halpern and would definitely recommend! read more

Very unprofessional, have been giving me the run around for months over something they said they would fix back in Jan. Every time I call they do not update the notes. Spoke with the general manager Rachel Gland who said she would resolve the issue months later issue is not fixed. Never received my refund and I will never go back to this location. read more

Awful. Maybe it's the new ownership but this place was horrible. The staff is extremely disorganized and unprofessional, constantly getting appointment times and orders wrong. They make it painstakingly difficult to get your prescription. I will not be returning. read more

I was visiting from out of state and stopped in the store to get a pair of sunglasses. The staff was really friendly and helpful. The receptionist Courtney helped me pick out a pair of ray bans while Penny was accurate in adjusting the new frames. Great service and a wonderful/wide selection.
