Extremely fun experience. It's appointment only, so don't go thinking you can just waltz in there. The staff is extraordinarily pleasant and there is no shortage of things to look at. You'll definitely give a few "oooo" and "ahhhh's" because everything they have is amazing! The quantity alone is worth stopping for. Highly recommend read more

I have had numerous pieces made by Henri over the years. He has a great eye for beauty, will collaborate and offer ideas that you never even imagined. You can spend hours looking at all the treasures he has scattered throughout the eclectic space. read more

I came to Henry's shop with a picture of the engagement ring I wanted mine to look like. He was not interested in seeing the picture and assured me that he could do it better and had other options for me to view. I told him my budget of 5k and he assured me that my budget was healthy and he would stay within it. I asked him if my partner isn't happy with the ring could I return it. His exact words were, "Its my jewelry, I designed it and I can take it back from you." So I was under the impression he would issue a return if there were any issues. Weeks later he showed me a molding of what the ring would look like, which I appreciated. I couldn't really tell what the ring would look like so I agreed to the molding and waited for the final result. When I went to see it, I was not happy with the design. I told him what I wanted and asked him to go back to the drawing board. He had been working on the ring for over a month now so he asked for more money as a deposit, which I happily gave him. Another few weeks go by and the ring is done. They don't allow walk-ins, so you need to schedule a time to come in, which is typically a week out. I didn't want to wait another week, so I requested to come in, pick up the ring, and purchase it. Which was my mistake. FYI he was $1500 dollars over my budget! DO NOT purchase a custom ring from Henry until you are completely satisfied. On the paper work it states, "No Returns for Custom Jewelry" Which was never mentioned to me until after I purchased the ring. When I got home the ring had so many design flaws that were noticeable to the average person. I showed the ring to my co-workers and more flaws were pointed out that I didn't catch myself. The ring was not symmetrical in multiple regions. The halo around the diamond hid the beauty of the diamond and I asked for the diamond to be more visible. The setting opening was not a circle but a semi circle. His response to that was, "You know the human finger is not a perfect circle, right?" He put the halo in the band of the ring. There was a stain on the inner part of the ring. And lastly, the diamond was set off level. To be perfectly honest the ring looked and felt like it was purchased from a vending machine at a carnival. I went back into the store with my mother, telling him about all the imperfections I noticed when I took the ring home. I requested a refund for the setting only and I would keep the diamond. He told me that was impossible. I didn't argue with him. I responded, "If you can't give me a refund, I would like you to separate the diamond from the setting." He offered to fix the mistakes on the ring and make it how I want it. But after two months of not getting it right and the final result being what I purchased, I was ready to move on. He told me I got a bargain on the ring... 6.4k in total. So now I am 2.3k in the hole and without a complete engagement ring. I am sure Henry is a fine jeweler and he has great pieces, but learn from my mistakes if you choose to have him make your custom jewelry. read more

People whining about "customer service" here have obviously never dealth with fussy prissy Eurotrash queens with too much money. HenrI David and his various European boy toys are all obnoxious brats, and that's what you're paying for. You can't watch it on "POSE" and love it and then get upset when you encounter it in real life, so if you don't like it, go home and watch your reruns of Drag Race and get your queer attitude in that palatable dose you're used to. The place is loaded with gaudy expensive trashy jewelry made for Real Housewives and Drag Queens, which is exactly why you should be coming here in the first place. It's f**king fabulous. Load your pockets with cash, steel yourself to be overcharged by snotty divas for jewelry you don't actually need, and then keep it until the day they bury you with it. If you don't like it, go to the mall and get something from Claire's. read more

I wanted to like it here so bad. But time and time again Henri has let us down - absolute stickler for appointments - which I would respect if he kept up his side of the bargain. Instead you just stand there for half an hour while he schmoozes with someone else and tells the same 4 stories (deBeers marketing campaign daughter, fight with credit card company about no computer, Stevie Nicks coming in once, and guy coming in with little money but begging to get his fiance the nicest ring possible. seriously each time i was here he told those stories to anyone in the store). Anyway - tried to get an engagement ring/wedding band duo made here and he just would not. listen. to what we wanted. He kept designing a ring with intricate flowers and loops when all we wanted was a simple band and signet. Went back 4 times only to have to break it off - and forget about getting a deposit back. Despite never having seen jewelry, apparently a wax mold he created is worth $600. Makes me wonder if he just does this in purpose - makes you put down a deposit while he strings you along until you have no choice but to look elsewhere. Really disappointing. read more

I truly love this place, and no words capture the degree of love and care the proprietor puts into his store. Halloween is a Philadelphia treasure. I bought a ring here years ago. Henri is a true artisan, and Yann is always a delight to work with. I have been buying unique jewelry since the shop was on South Street. I've worked with Henri on several custom pieces. Craftsmanship takes time, and the final result is always worth the wait! I've had my own jewelry repaired here and have been very happy with the results. I visit every time I'm in town and usually end up buying something unexpected. Fabulous shop, great staff, and I've recommended it to many friends. read more

Absolutely astounding shop run by wonderful, funny, creative human beings. THIS THIS THIS is the antidote to all that is corporate America and the dehumanization of shopping. This is the personal experience many of us crave. The owners and sales people are fantastic, as long as you arrive with an attitude of respect and restraint. If you can't muster basic human decency or if you behave with entitlement or rudeness, stick to mall jewelry stores and Amazon. Me? I want to live in a world that leans to Halloween quirk and humanity, not the personal Hell of algorithmic craptastic overpriced junk-peddling. I'm willing to abide by the rules in order to avoid the Hell that is modern shopping. Halloween in that scenario is heaven. Now: the jewelry? It's amazing. It's unfathomable. Make sure you allow plenty of time to browse. Halloween sells mostly well-chosen antiques and handmade stuff. And they are skilled at making the jewelry your heart desires. It's not at all overpriced. I found the prices to be very fair and much less than the resale jewelry shops in the Baltimore area where I live, even including the Amtrak ticket to get to Philly! If you want quality and something unusual, Halloween is the place. Make an appointment. Be on time. Show restraint. And don't get on your phone to chat with someone obnoxiously. Be aware of your body in the space-- which is tight to fit all the wonderful jewelry cases. And be patient. These people are busy and it ain't easy dealing with the public, especially the jittery brides and grooms coming in to select engagement rings. This place is a lesson in old time decency and quality, but at the same time, it's anything but stuffy. Capturing it in words is hard. I love it. read more

jerked around for 4 months and we finally said no. dont even care that he wouldnt budge on the $800 dollar deposit - well worth it to disentangle us from him. we wanted to love this store- it seemed like the perfect haven to get a custom funky ring. but its just not it. henri acts like "oh darling of cooooourse i can make that" but then cannot deliver. you want to believe him cause hes so confident! but ladies do not risk hating your ring because of a senile man's ego. he also is a stickler about YOU making an appointment, but did not once show up on time. and most of all - he can use a breath mint read more

It has now been four years since I had my engagement ring custom made at Halloween, and it's as gorgeous today as it was on the day it was given to me. I do take minimal care of it to make sure it's cleaned regularly, and that makes a world of difference in how it looks. The process was a little bit annoying as we live in DC and didn't have a car at the time (thanks, public transportation!) so we had to rent a car to head to Philly three times--once to pick out the ring, the second time to see it in mold form (with the rock in the wax mold), and the third time to actually pick it up. I really wish they could have mailed it that third time, but if we lived in Philly or had had a car it wouldn't have been a big deal. And, if it hadn't fit we would have likely wanted to get it resized...all in all a minor inconvenience. I ultimately couldn't find a wedding band to complement my engagement ring or a band my husband liked at Halloween, much as I tried. We ended up going to Bario Neal for both mine and my husband's rings and I love the contrast of a modern and kind of funky wedding band against what looks like an antique engagement ring. They somehow just flow together even thought they maybe shouldn't. And I loved that we weren't pressured at Halloween to buy a specific complementing wedding band or shamed for not doing so. I understand what other reviewers have said about feeling like maybe Henri and others are dismissive in their customer service, but honestly I loved it? I feel like almost all of the other jewelry stores we looked at were extraordinarily high pressure, and here they give you enough information to make an informed decision and let you do with that what you will. That take it or leave it attitude is what drew me in. We definitely felt a difference between the engagement ring shopping--when we were very helped--and when we looked at the wedding band--when we felt pointed in the right direction and then totally ignored. read more

Henry loves what he does, and what he does is make incredible jewelry. My fiancé and I got our wedding bands and engagement ring made, and Henry walked us through the process with ease. We purchased two beautiful rings for our ten year wedding anniversary. The owner is really nice, and John, who has worked there for quite a while, was so patient and helpful. The place is beautiful. My engagement ring was custom-made by Henri. The face is beautiful, as is the gem used (aquamarine). Shop here if you're looking for a dizzying selection and somewhat gaudy style and don't mind moderately inflated prices. Halloween is definitely a unique experience, but one I wouldn't personally repeat (though I know they have many loyal fans). In my case, the ring needed resizing three times! To their credit, they did not charge me extra. The first time his assistant used a ring sizer and it was too small, the second time Henri didn't even check sizing and it ended up too big, and the third time he measured carefully and added little balls to the back of the band because the ring was very top-heavy and sliding around. It still slides around a bit, and the band is incredibly thin which bothers me. I've looked at friends' engagement rings, and the quality of the band on mine is poor & thin in comparison. At some point it will likely crack at the thinnest point and I'll have a jeweler add more metal to it. If you're looking for antiques, this is a decent place to check out. Buying jewelry is kind of an intimate activity, and I found the attitude of the staff here to be dismissive and standoffish so I would not shop here again. read more

This shop is absolutely fantastic. The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because the store is super super hard to navigate. There's stuff everywhere, and they seem to have it all filed away by type/age, but it was an experience. The ring I got for my wife is killer. Old. Beautiful. She loved it! Will come back. read more

Listen - every review about customer service being terrible here is 100% correct. Arrogant, rude and unethical. I can't believe they've been selling people poorly crafted 'custom-made' jewelry for this long. My ring had to be resized 4 times, for some reason he couldn't get it right but insisted that i must have swelling issues with my fingers (weird). i was brushed off every time i walked in - the band was completely uneven and the diamond was loose - but according to Henri - this is the nature of custom work. When i finally went to have the ring reset at a different jeweler that actually listened to me - it turns out the ring he resized for me 4 times was a full half size larger than what he told my fiance and I. Don't bother wasting your money here on custom-made work. read more

Walking into Halloween can be pretty intimidating the first time, it sort of makes you feel like a virgin on prom night and a bull in a China shop all wrapped up into one being. First, you must be buzzed in to a nondescript entrance that makes you second guess that you're even in the right place. Once inside you will be met with columns of pearls and cases full of precious metals and gemstones. The staff immediately quash any uncertainty you may be feeling with their welcoming, sweet natures. They are all very knowledgeable and seem to treat everyone the same, regardless of what the customer looks like. My engagement ring and wedding band are from Halloween. Both were custom made by Mr. Henri David. He worked with my husband to mold an old ring into my engagement ring and it turned out beautifully. He was also very patient with us when we were picking out our wedding bands, as we are both pretty clueless when it comes to jewelry. Skip the mall jewelry stores and go support an amazing and unique establishment. And don't forget to check out the many cases of animal themed jewelry. My husband snagged a rat brooch for me for my 30th birthday and it's adorable. read more

Some notable pieces were the Art Deco filagree bracelet collection and an amazing covered watch pin from the 40's. No purchase made but I'll be back whenever I'm in town. read more

I am not a jewelry person, and needless to say I was dreading the shopping for an engagement ring. I came here on a not-so-subtle suggestion of my fiance, and I must say, I am glad she pointed me here. Henry met with me for a good hour as we went over a number of stones, and showed remarkable patience as I tried to explain exactly what I wanted. and it came out perfect, 100% perfect. I'm still not a jewelry man, but I am a Halloween man. For the intrepid or the timid shopper, this is the place. I will only come here from now on. read more

Even if you do not consider yourself a jewelry fan you should check out Halloween. I am a huge jewelry fan and I nearly cried when I first went into this shop. It is both overwhelming and breath-taking and filled to the rafters with shiny bits of perfection. Henri David takes inspiration from everything and personally shops for his gems. He has made the wedding and engagement rings for at least half a dozen couples that I know and each ring is different and beautiful. Embarrassing lack of quality. Non-existent customer service. Almost every Yelp review for custom jewelry is negative (including the hidden non-recommended reviews), and I wish I would've read Yelp before purchasing a pair of $550 custom pearl earrings! Even the positive reviews mention problems -- seems the only reviews that are strictly positive are the visitors to the store who don't buy anything. The pearl fell out of one of my earrings after maybe the 4th or 5th wear; I always only wore the earrings out to an event (put in before the event, took out as soon as I got home). I called Halloween expecting an offer of a fix, but was told that they would charge me for the pearl and repair. More frustrating was that the owner repeatedly said it must have been my fault (as many other reviews mention when diamonds fell out of their custom-set rings) -- he even said maybe it fell out when I brushed back my hair! SO THE OWNER ADMITTED THAT THEIR JEWELRY IS SO FRAGILE THAT STONES CAN FALL OUT SIMPLY BY BRUSHING BACK ONE'S HAIR. Yikes. That's an embarrassing level of poor quality. Even in the positive reviews, people admit to needing to bring back jewelry multiple times for fixes -- how is this place still in business?!?! read more

Have had you on my list a while, Halloween. Visited you on a springtime-y February 18th. Question One: Who made all those display cases for you? They're in the walls, they're in the banisters, they're in the archways and pillars. And they're loaded. Which leads me to question two. Question Two: How on EARTH did you acquire so much to offer? every case is tumbling with charm,s earrings, strands, rings, necklaces, pendants, figurines... The amber section? When I have a jewelery corner like that, I will display it that way, and that is when I will know I HAVE MY OWN TREASURE TROVE. This is the same way I feel about the pearls sections. Question Three: Are pearls considered vegan? Question Four: Do you have giveaways? Because I want so much of what you have to offer. And that heart-shaped display filled with heart-shaped things is to die for when you're a Valentine enthusiast like me. Everything there is divine. I can't imagine going to the lengths of having something made when so much is already there, waiting for me to win the lottery a couple times over. read more

This is one of my best not-so-kept secrets of Philadelphia. I remember when someone first told me about this store, I was a barista and complimented a girls necklace after seeing her in the shop a few times a week. She thanked me and went on here way, a week later we started talking and she ended up passing me a folded napkin which contained a little map and the only way to find the treasure chest was a small business card in the window. I ended up keeping that napkin in my pocket for a while and forgetting all about it. Fast forward a few months (maybe a year), I found myself talking to someone about our mutual love for costume jewelry. Appropriately placed, I found that same napkin tucked in my jewelry box. We ventured out to the store and from the second I was buzzed in, a feeling of regret came over me- How could I have sat on this for so long?! This store is a real life treasure chest. They have every single charm for your bracelet, gaudy costume jewelry, amazing tanzanite, cuff links and of course the perfect ring for that special lady. Prices are wonderful, from $30 up to whatever your heart desires. I walked out with a little shark jaw ring that unhinges and I always get compliments on it. The staff is incredibly helpful, opening up every case for you to try on what catches your eye. You even get a cute little halloween treat bag to go along with your new jewelry. So whether you're in the neighborhood walking around or you're trying to search for a rare antique setting- check this place out. You seriously will not regret it. read more

Even Paris doesn't have anything like this! And I know because I'm from there. This store is any girl's fantasy land. It's a playground built out of opera pearl necklaces, gold earrings, and vintage anything shiny. I also love the fact that it's underground and hidden. The spectacular decor inside the shop contrasts so much with the quasi-invisible storefront, that you feel like Alice stepping on the other side of the mirror when you enter Halloween. Top all this magic with the indisputable craftsmanship of the owner and you got yourself a winner. I highly recommend this place if you need some specific repair done on your jewelry, or if your husband is desperately begging for your forgiveness (you know what I mean ladies). read more

Searching for jewelry makes me anxious and there's definitely a mix of good and bad reviews here so I was apprehensive. But, I visited Halloween at the recommendation of a friend. No sign on the door, just ring the bell and they let you in. You walk downstairs into a tiny room crammed with all sort of jewelry and decoration into every corner. Henri, the primary jeweler and proprietor is definitely a unique and eccentric fellow. But, he seems more the artist than salesman and that set me at ease. Initially I was looking for a custom made engagement ring. She wanted a simple sapphire ring with a vintage feel. Henri walked me through the process and he made things generally easy. I had to make several trips to the store for initial designs, to select a gem, to approve a wax model and eventually for final approval and payment. In the end, we got exactly what she wanted for less than another store on Jeweler's Row quoted me for a non-custom ring, and just in time for our trip to Mexico and my eventual proposal. We came back to Halloween and Henri for her wedding band. He had great ideas for a matching band. However, this time around communication seemed to break down. Though he said he would show her a wax model first, when we finally heard back he had already made the ring. She ended up getting a ring that is, though beautiful, not exactly how she would have preferred for it to look. We still trust in Henri but, in this case, there was definitely some mistakes with organization and communication. Currently she is trying to decide whether it is enough of a difference from the initial concept to get the ring re-done. Overall, considering you can get custom made jewelry by an actual artist for as much or less than rings you will get at some Jeweler's Row locations it is recommended. read more

After 15+ years of living in Philly, I finally came to the vaunted Halloween. First thing- cash or check only. For $400 or more items. Argh. I like getting Amex points if I am spending that much. So, that was ANNOYING. McDonalds takes cards for $2 so does the Korean bodega down the street. I specifically said I was looking for old to the owner- antique or vintage. They told me one section was old. The owner made sure I looked towards some other cases. I ended up with a cool pair of earrings. I was paying and asked for provenance. The dude said they were new. WTF. I was looking for OLD. Love them, but annoyed. Had my heart set upon old. Money had already exchanged hands at that point- guess I should have asked earlier. Can I say it again? WTF. ANNOYED. I was also looking for an amazing, chunky item like a cuff bracelet that was antique- long story- out bid on another piece - have been searching.... Everything at Halloween was kind of in the same vein - smaller, delicate pieces- there was a tiara... I did not go upstairs as that was all contemporary as well. Remember to hit the ATM if you are headed here. Or bring a checkbook. I am not sure I will be doing either. read more

The antique jewelry selection is enormous and stunning. They will try to sell you on their custom work - DO NOT HAVE CUSTOM WORK DONE. Personally, I have no experience with custom jewelry at Halloween, so maybe this negativity is against the rules. But I strongly urge you to read the reviews on Yelp (and all the other business review sites) about the nightmare experiences people have had with custom work. That being said, they have an enormous collection of antiques, and much of it is quite fabulous. No matter what kind of stones or jewelry you're into, they have it there. They have classic stuff, weird stuff, kitschy stuff, and more. Go check out Halloween and their awesome collection, and make sure you give yourself at LEAST and hour to do so. Just don't let them woo you on anything custom. read more

Whenever you talk about jewelry in Philly this seems to be the first place people will tell you about. I was able to go and they had a great selection and great service. You can tell they have such a rep that the clients are almost enamored that they have the opportunity to shop there. Price wise about average, depending on the piece, and vintage items are as is so worth an inspection before purchase if condition is a factor. I would be a repeat client if I lived closer. read more

Henri David is an awesome guy and the pieces he has for sale in the store are amazing. But I would seriously caution anyone against having him do any custom work for you if you want it done quickly. After hearing several raves about Henri, I had him design my engagement ring. It came back a shoddy mess several times. After the third time I sent it back, I was getting pretty disappointed. He told my fiance' that he would just start over with the ring. The 4th time, it came back PERFECT. It was exactly what I had asked for. Henri was relentless in his desire to see me happy with the ring. He refused to let us pay a dollar more for it, and his customer service was second to none. There are several reviews on Citysearch that provide a more accurate review of his work that I would suggest any buyer read before getting any custom work done because his work is not for the impatient. But given his dedication to his customers, I would most definitely go back. read more

My friend heard about Halloween and wanted to go when I was in town. I'm a big jewelry person, so I was excited to go. Halloween doesn't have a sign. You have to know it is there. You press the doorbell and you get buzzed in. What looks like a plain corner on Pine is actually this amazing jewelry store. You walk downstairs and there is just stuff to see everywhere. I love the unusual gemstones, anytime I see ruby in zoisite I know I'm in a cool place! I especially loved all the usual unique pearls that they had in the pearl section. We spent a lot of time just browsing. I saw some stuff I really liked but because they are cash or check only I didn't get anything.
