One of my favorite parts is Bickle Knob because the views from the fire tower are beyond spectacular. Bowden Cave is also a great place to explore as well. There is a ton of great places to camp, mountain bike, and hike. If you are ever able to stop in any part of the Monongahela National Forest please do yourself a favor and do it. We went through the Cranberry Glades and also found a random trail that led to waterfalls. This forest is GIANT. My family and I rode on the Tygart Flyer train to the High Falls this past week. We booked the…read moreParlor Car, which was well worth the little bit extra per ticket. It is a beautiful 100 year old dining car with tables right at the huge picture windows and big comfy movable chairs. It has a private restroom as well. Lunch was served in the parlor car (no need to wobble your way to another car) on the way up to the falls, and was a cold buffet of roast beef, pastrami, cheeses, tomatoes, lettuce, garden salad, grilled chicken for the salad, potato salad, rolls, and drinks. All of this was followed up with a delicious piece of pie and a glass of wine on our way back down to Elkins. The Parlor Car host, Chase, was personable, attentive, and overall outstanding! The scenery was beautiful and High Falls are quite spectacular. Mary, the historian, did a wonderful job telling us all about the history of the train, the towns, and the landmarks along the ride. I would 100% recommend this trip if you find yourself near Elkins, WV.

Nice ambiance in the first level of a house, but apparently understaffed ( guess this is a common theme in Elkins)...waited about 5-10 minutes to be greeted until my husband went directly to a server. Eventually seated. Hubby enjoyed his food: a spicy shrimp soup and chicken empanadas. My food was just ok; an acorn squash soup that was a bit bland and one of their specials, sweet and spicy Thai with chicken: chicken overcooked, not too much of it, and prepared in corn/cheese (?), which I wasn't expecting. Rice was rather bland, too. Server was friendly, but not very attentive. Probably because she was back and forth to the back room where there's a bar and a DJ ( at lest when we were there last night). The 2 glasses of sangria were good, and the total bill came to about $52 without tip. This could have been such a better experience; management take notice regarding staffing but maybe that's a continuation of a bad trend...

I did manage to get there on Saturday just as they opened for dinner. El Gran Sabor is located in a converted vintage home; there is a small bar area and a medium sized dining room. The decor is comfortable and homey. Service was good and the menu pulls from both Mexican and Venezuelan cuisine which sounded like a great idea after a hard day of skiing. I ended up ordering the Shrimp Cachapa since I had not had this item before. This is a corn pancake topped with shrimp, vegies and cheese sided with rice and beans. A very tasty dish and just the kind of balanced meal to have after a day of exercising; also an item I have not seen on other menus before so I always like to try new things. I also really enjoyed the cup of spicy shrimp soup that came with the meal, rich shrimp flavor with a nice hit of spice warmed me to the core and got the meal off to a great start. I would strongly recommend El Gran Sabor if you are looking for a meal in Elkins, this was far and away the best meal I had during my visit and I would head back if I were in the area again. Definitely the culinary highlight of my vacation.

They do a lunch service and the ride is full of commentary describing the surrounding areas. Before the train departed, we were able to walk down to the Natural Museum (Darden Mill) and were given some suggestions on local swimming holes and hiking trails. We also stopped by the West Virginia Railway Museum and caught up on the history of Elkins (as well as some spooky folklore). 10/10 would suggest spending a day doing train related activities. The train runs Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

There are many temporary exhibits too, so it's worth coming back again. First of all…read more Gambil Amusments is the company that runs the rides for the Mt. State Forest Festival. On 7 Oct 2022. I was approached by one of the employees who started yelling at me about where the vehicle I was in was parked. Funny thing is. I was the passenger and the driver was in the American Legion. I tried to talk with him but he was belligerent. He called for his supervisor who brought his Daughter(an employee) and the three of them began yelling at me and the supervisor threatened to attack me on multiple occasions. He wasn't shoving me with his hands but he was definitely trying to do so with his body. All in all we completed our mission and left them standing in the street yelling and cursing at us as we left. All while in front of the Legion and all of the children and families around. My driver and I both are disabled Veterans he of Vietnam and myself from Iraq. This is how Gambil amusements treat veterans and they have no concern for your children. bTw I have attempted to contact both the FF and Gambil Amusements over this incident. I have been ignored

The campgrounds are clean, as are the shower houses. The river was nice and cool when we were there and it was nice to see others enjoying the water. We tried one of the hiking trails, some parts were easier than others.
