I imagine that is what an awesome cool dude would do... but I wouldn't know about that because I'm just sitting back wondering why my wife dragged me here so she can Instagram stuff while my kids fight over who gets to swing on the swing next. As I sit back and watch my family just goof around, I'm low key fighting back the anxiety of having to go back to work on Monday and struggle to fake like I know what I'm doing... because I don't. We were the only ones on the tour, which truly made it an even better experience! This time, my mom, aunt, and I did the First Floor North and South tours. The South tour was given to us by Madison and she was a fantastic tour guide! She provided us with so much information and some information we did not hear on our first tour there! We were also the only ones on this tour, which was nice. The second tour of the day was the North tour and this tour is new to the asylum! It opened this year and it gives insight as to where the criminally insane patients were housed after the Criminally Insane Building was shut down. This tour was given to us by Jasmine and she was amazing as well! This tour was a group, but it was still very interesting! I am looking forward to going back for an overnight tour and/or the haunted house!! Highly recommend!

Easily one of the best tours I've ever taken…read more I knew this would need to be part of our WV itinerary as soon as this place's existence became known to me while I was planning a possible trip. Just the name is enough to grab you but it certainly delivers. The thought of doing a paranormal tour intrigued me but I was also interested in the history. We arrived at 2:20 and were informed the paranormal tour wasn't starting until 4. Did we really want to wait until 4?! The very nice man provided descriptions of all of the tours and the paranormal one just sounded so interesting that it didn't seem like a real debate. We bought tickets and were considering how we would kill time but it turns out, they have a very interesting museum about the place's history on the first floor that someone entertained my ADHD ass until 3:55. It was incredible. As if that couldn't get any better, the tour was absolutely fascinating. We were taken throughout the museum and our guide, Brad, was impressively knowledgeable about the place, answered every question in exquisite detail. The only disappointment was that instead of experiencing anything paranormal, we were just told stories about things other people have experienced. Don't get me wrong, this was captivating but I was hoping to experience something for myself which I did not. An absolute must visit if you are interested in this kind of shit and are anywhere remotely in the vicinity.

Sat in the Parlor Car and had the pleasure to be served by Chase: very attentive, personable and went above and beyond for a few of our requests. The trains themselves were restored beautifully and quite comfortable and little did I know we would have the best seat in the house: right behind the diesel that got repositioned ( hubby is the train expert; forgive my probable incorrect recall and terminology!) Views were absolutely stunning, and exactly why these trips book up months in advance, particularly for the fall colors. Great narration by Mary as stated above, with lots of interesting information, not just related to trains. The highlight was the stop at the Falls- gorgeous and lucky there was rain recently so there just wasn't just a trickle! Lots of time to check it out before our return trip back. Met Stretch and Terry as well-- outstanding employees who truly care about giving the passengers an excellent experience. Food on our car was a make your own sandwich spread: roast beef was excellent but my one request is that they offer non red meat choices (like chicken) as my husband does not eat red meat (thank you to Chase for going to another car so my husband could have chicken for his sandwich). Gift shop as well at the depot. This being our fifth train ride in as many days, this was definitely THE BEST all around.

The lady at the counter in the museum was helpful and pleasant. Beth was our Parlor Car hostess. She attended to our every need and more. Her descriptions of the scenery were helpful. If you don't have children under the age of 12 and can reserve the Parlor Car, I highly recommend it. The décor was great. The restroom was convenient in the same car. Our return trip allowed us to watch the back of the train move through the tunnel and around the bends. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Elkins which was a great hotel with a wonderful view. Dinner at Maggies in downtown Elkins made our whole experience memorable.
